Which bass do you want, even though you shouldn't?

You might recognize it: you crave for a certain bass, even if you know it's not meant for you. You don't like it, you'll never use it, it doesn't fit in your arsenal or some other reason. But still, you know you want one.

I have that with fretted Stingrays. I know I don't use a Stingray in the bands I play in. I've owned a USA Sterling, which I really admired for the build quality and playability. I like their looks. I basically like everything about them, but still I won't buy one. I think. I think I should. But I don't want to. It's weird.

I wouldn’t say I crave it but I’ve always liked the look of the Ida Nielsen signature, I don’t like gold hardware but it looks cool , I’m guessing I’d play it for a while then it would sit in the rack

I'd like one of those Italia basses with the 4 lipstick pickups.

Boy in Stirling has one for sale, been asking £600 for it most of last year. That's twice what I'm prepared to pay 😀

Having played one a few years ago, £200/£300 is spot on - they were cool…but not £600 cool

A Gibson Les Paul bass!
Tried a number of them but the neck makes my wrist hurt after a few minutes.
My wrists are bad because of work so I need necks to be shallow front to back.

Alembic Spider

- weighs a metric ton

- ergonomics, say what?

- probably even worse to find a case than to a T-bird, an Original, or a C-bass (which would also be of interest)

- price is around £toomuch

Fantastic basses, although fairly hefty. The case with mine weighed considerably more than the bass itself and that’s saying something.

But at apx £3,500 they are a factor of 10 outside my affordability!

I'd genuinely like one of those... if only they'd make it with parallel frets and pickups 🙂

Stingrays are mine too. They wouldn't fit in any band I'm in and I haven't got on with the necks on any I've played before.

Really love listening to other people playing them though and am always tempted to give them a go!

I shouldn't want any basses this year, I'm supposed to be aff it!

But if a Fender Modern Player Dimension bass (the one with the triplebucker) ever appeared in white at a knockdown price, my abstinence would be under severe threat!

I wish Fender had stuck with it for more than a few years, I think the Dimension is a good looking bass.

Completely impractical for anything I've done, like, ever.

Nonetheless, I recall starting out in the early days and hanging around the local library (I was wild back when): there was this picture in a book of some hippy playing one of these and, y'know ... Bass porn to an impressionable young lad

Being a strictly 5-sting and Bass VI player these days there are plenty of basses that exist only in 4-string version which I like the look of but would never actually use if I owned them.

If I had the money I'd buy a good example of each of those useless (to me) 4-string basses and get excellent luthiers to use them as templates to make me 5-string or Bass VI versions that I could use.
