Dingus Posted April 28, 2014 Share Posted April 28, 2014 (edited) BGM isn't that bad overall , but it just seems to me to be an opportunity wasted. They have got access to players and gear and the means to produce and distribute the magazine, so all they need to do is enhance the content and make it a bit more interesting by going into a bit more detail and, crucially, being more imaginative. This is the thing with such mags, you can`t please everyone all the time. There have been editions where I`ve not been interested in much of the content. Doesn`t stop me buying it though, as I can often learn something from the items I`m not that keen on, such as never really had funk worked out, but the tutorial at the back gave me a nice grounding on this style. Lots of players, people who have access to gear who work in music retail or within the industry (or could include reviews of gear by basschatters playing other basschatters basses... [/quote] Except that it would need a lot of editorial work by an entire team to organise it all - for free! - and could obviously only be published online, on here, as printing and distribution are immensely expensive nowadays, compared with any returns. The annual LBGS "preview" issue, with 7 pages of stuff we ALREADY KNOW, like "profiles" of players appearing this year, and (snorrrre.....) pages of manufacturers profiles too. This is stuff BGM have been banging on about since they announced the first guest months ago, a complete waste of paper. They have included more interviews but these are just expanded versions of the dismal "Bassically Speaking" section (which in itself now runs to 5 pages) and it's all THE SAME; "I don't/do slap because...", "I don't/do play 5/6/7/8/10/12 strings because..." GAAAGGGGHHHHH!!! Oh, and here's a handy hint for BGM's gear review photographers - when you take a picture of a guitar can we have an image where we can actually see what it looks like (preferably from the top) instead of pointing your camera down the bass from the bridge end (see this month's Jackson Dave Ellefson Kelly Bird review...) There is so little content for the money, just look at other magazines on the shelves and the thickness vs price. Its full of ads too... They had the odd good bit, like Mike Flynn's interviews (he's a genuinely good interviewer and writer), but I am not shelling out daft money just for that. There's a review of a Jackson Kelly Bird crammed onto 2 pages with the photo taken from the arse end making it hard to see the extent of its shape. Loads of so called interviews with top players which are just rehashes of the " Do you play a 5 string" and "Who's the best player in your opinion?" questions.
