  1. I'd just get a refund. Work like that isn't what I'd want in a custom bass, and a luthier that sends you a bass like that isn't one I'd trust/want to refinish it. Best advice is get your money back and go elsewhere. I'll be honest and say I dont understand the reluctance to name the builder unless you're happy for others to be provided with shoddy work jist like you have? All you're doing is protecting someone that's not bothered to provide you with a decent quality of work and sounds like they've tried to shine you on too... Reputations are earned either way, you're allowing others to get burned by protecting this builders reputation despite their work standards and service and allowing others to perhaps assume its someone who it isn't and inadvertently tarnish someone else's reputation. Dem's my two cents, not that they were asked for!

  2. UPDATE: Thank you all for your input! The bass is on its way back to the builder at no cost to me and I have been assured that it will be repaired and made perfect. I only shared the ugly aspects of it but it's not all bad, the bass plays really well and the neck is beautiful. It also looks awesome as long as you don't look too close. 😅 I'm not making excuses for him because obviously it should all be perfect. I am giving him a second chance because I did a lot of research on this guy and have spoken personally to someone who owns one, for some reason it seems like I got unlucky. I really want this bass and if it's not perfect I can always send it back again for a full refund although I pray that it doesn't come down to that. If I had a feeling that he was consistently putting out shoddy work and scamming people it would be a different story. He seems to be keen to make amends so fingers crossed.

  3. Calm down, man. I had already decided it was unacceptable, I was looking for help and solutions on what to do about it. I have sent the bass back and he is going to refinish it.

  5. Im not sure if thats correct tbh. Asking for other peoples input and opinions is always going to be tricky if you won't give all the info ( builders name ) and then get offended at the end. Ive only ever found that 99% of the people on here are genuine and are willing to help anyone sort out a situation. Theres the odd one of course... Hopefully he gets the bass he wants and originally ordered.

  6. Ridiculous. I made a JJ Mustang from a Bronco for less than half that price. Ok, the MIJ one has better pickups, hardware, electronics and general workmanship, but apart from that..

  8. I'm perfectly calm. I'm not the one who is £2,300 out of pocket. The problem with the sort of person you're dealing with is that if they sent that bass out thinking it was in any way acceptable, giving them a second chance at f*c*ing it up is the worst thing you can do. You're probably not aware of the 'Letts' thread that has been referred to, but we've seen it before. If it was just just the paint job, borderline, but it has more issues than that. Even if you get something back that you can live with, it will never be the custom bass experience you had in mind when you ordered it. Tell them you've changed your mind and ask for a full refund. You can thank us later.

  9. In fairness, the thread title is: "Disappointing new bass day...I would appreciate some opinions.". So, opinions you got! 🙂

  10. I can see me! It was an amazing gig and was great to be back on stage with you again. I was playing the 6 string, octave higher and inferior cousin to the bass guitar unfortunately for this gig, but it was still fun nonetheless. 😜 I'm not on stage for this one (I was in the Alanis, Bowie and encore sets) but here's another photo from the front. I did like the G&L L2500 being played here. I tried it out and it seemed well made, comfortable, easy to play, with lots of tonal options.

  12. Dodgy luthiers stay in business through customers like this. They send out shonky rubbish knowing that some customers are marks who won't ask for refunds and will keep the identity of the builder a secret so others can fall into the same trap.

  13. Coming on too strong and belittling the OP is a classic online blunder. It puts them and others off, and makes this forum less useful.

  14. Well that was fun! It is in fact a working amp, with a huge range of tones on tap. As ever when I'm trying out my builds at volume, I get a lot of buzzes and rattles in the room that make it difficult to hear whether there is distortion from the amp, so a blast in a hall or something would be an advantage. Background noise is acceptable with just a little 100Hz hum. I can hear no effect from the bright switch on the normal channel because I have the channel volume up a fair way, so I might turn that into a channel selector instead. There's now way too much negative voltage available on the bias circuit so I'll experiment with component values and maybe add another filter cap in there - who knows, that might reduce that hum a little. For now I think I'll work out the best place to fit the top handle and get it installed, although I think it may be a challenging one-handed lift!

  15. It’s the Letts bass thread all over again! Shonky work delivered to a customer who can’t be bothered to stand up for himself. Unless you name the builder, this thread is pointless. If it’s supposed to serve as a warning, it doesn’t with those details. You’ve already decided it’s unacceptable or you wouldn't have posted it. Get a grip and send it back for a refund and go somewhere else.

  16. Fantastic new track from The Don, from his upcoming bass-centric instrumental album Il Basso. The video is beautifully ridiculous as always. 😅

  17. If it was one or maybe two small issues, then sending it back (at the luthier's expense) might be fair, but this looks like it was built by someone that either just didnt care or didn't have the skills to pull off the build to a consumer level standard. Which would make me (personally) loose faith in the maker and want a refund. I'll bet good money if the OP gets it back, it will still have issues. Though I hope for their sake it comes back immaculate and that they are absolutely chuffed with it.

  18. Standard for this shape of Overwater bass. Both of my Overwater Originals had the strap button in the same place under the upper horn. It never caused me any problems so it must have worked well. One of those Overwaters was my main bass for the whole of the 90s and beyond.

  19. "Fender. Renaming the same old basses every year of so to keep you interested." Christ on a bike, more reinvention. If you look at Fender's UK site, they have 27 different series of bass instruments, and god knows what derivatives exist within those categories. We've had decades of these shenanigans. I honestly pine for the 70s, when it was pretty much American Precisions, Jazzes and maybe Mustangs/Musicmasters, limited colours, limited neck finishes. It just seemed simpler times.

  22. Bought from geoff90guitar from here - I've had a fret level, and had the edges rounded off (though Reverend claim a plex process, the ends were still bit rough and not to the exacting specs of my luthier pal) also replaced the nut with a new bone nut - and set up with TI flats - so spent a bit of it so just asking for what i paid and put into it but still huge saving so price set to sell - it's just not for me and have just bought a lovely P off here (i'm just traditional it seems) See small body ding in pics Big, deep and punchy with excellent clarity is the calling card of the Mercalli. The innovative passive pickups have that vintage warmth, while the five-piece neck and high mass bridge deliver modern punch and sustain! 25. Surprising what an improvement a well designed cab will make to the sound of a bass. Makes you realise how much other cabs are just a bunch of speakers thrown together in a box.

  28. Bad move requesting a repair. The guy is clearly a chancer so it'll prob come back with a whole set of different probs. If you did this on credit card you should be good to go.

  29. If the OP still wanted the bass and works completed, p*ssing off the “luthier” by making it public wouldn’t be a great start to working things out amicably.

  30. Are they going to sort the frets and other issues too? Didn't look like the only problem was the finish but obvs its you call and bass/money.

  32. That'll be me! Cool little thing - have wanted one since a much younger & poorer version of me saw one in the old Wapping Bass Centre back in 1980-something. Its future may hold a refinish - the black's not original anyway, and I always fancied a pink one... I'm also vaguely curious to find out if the wood/build's like this under the paint. But I bet it's not. I have read a bit (old MIJ basses/guitars are sort of my thing) about the background of Headway/Riverhead & it's likely the info on the current Headway/Deviser website is a pretty reliable overview. https://www.deviser.co.jp/en/headway/about/history Prog nerd factoid - Fairport Convention/Tull bassist Dave Pegg played one of these, & liked it so much he named a bass instrumental piece after it. And presumbaly it's the bass he's playing here: https://youtu.be/iC_GmZzfq8M?si=lowA6MZInIv5wWKm

  35. That is absolutely shocking and should be rejected. It's damaged! There's absolutely no pride in that work at all. Did someone really look at that and say, "that's good to go, he'll be over the moon with that."?

  37. It lives! Last night I was trying to work out which HT node the excess curent was coming from. The various components up to the third node (C+) all tested ok but I was measuring 121k from C+ to ground where it should have been open circuit. Before I turned in for the night it occurred to me that I should look for leakage in the coupling caps. While I was falling asleep (in the hypnagogic state, no less) I kept thinking that there were resistors where there should be capacitors, but when I woke up I realised that was just daft. This afternoon I checked over the circuit diagram and worked out there are just two 100nF capacitors which, if leaky, could allow positive voltage onto the control grids of the 6L6s, thus messing up their negative bias. I found them on the layout, but when I looked on my eyelet board, there was a 100k resistor fitted in each spot! I had written '100n' (for 100nF) on my layout but misread it as 100k (100kΩ). Consequently there was a straight resistive path from the anodes of the phase inverter to the control grids of the 6L6s, with no capacitors to block DC. I took out the resistors, fitted the correct caps, and was able to bias the amp to a healthy place. I gave it a quick test through the guitar speaker cab that I keep in my music room, and all the controls seem to work as they should. Tomorrow I'll give it a try through my BF Super Twin while Mrs Axe is at work

  38. ….which is exactly what I thought when I read the first post. I think the reality is other bass players might currently be committing money to a luthier who might be about to go Full Letts….

  41. I was idly perusing the Gear pages of 'No Treble' yesterday morning and stumbled on this very different creation by Chris Seldon, a Toronto-based Luthier. What caught my eye was the Scout 434's absolutely mahoosive Gordo Single Coil pickup, which he says produces a either a clean bell-like tone if played subtly, or an 'aggressive grind' when digging in, rather like a Rickenbacker. As for looks, I like instruments that deliberately look a little different, and the seemingly cut-off headstock just says, "we're not Fender, okay?!" to me. I have made contact with Chris to see what one of these would potentially set me back. (Prepared for a large Canadian Dollar number in response...) https://www.chrisseldon.com

  43. With a parallel loop, you're only applying it to part of the signal (probably 50%) and the un-EQd signal will still be getting through. My guess is that the signal sounds fatter and fuller with the EQ off when in the loop, because your EQ is filtering out the things that make it sound fat and full in the first place. Some Markbass amps (for sure, the LM2 and LM3) had an internal jumper that allows you to change the loop from parallel to serial. That means you get the whole signal modified, at the expense of getting complete silence if the effects chain fails. The other thing to be aware of is that most effects loops are designed to work with line-level voltage equipment (think rack effects) whereas most stomp boxes work at instrument level voltage. So they may not work properly, may require gain changes, or they might be absolutely fine. And with house amps, not only do you have to worry about whether they have loops, you also have to find out whether they're serial or parallel. My experience is effects loops on bass amps are best avoided altogether, unless you have something like a rack-mounted DBX 166 studio compressor and want to apply it to the whole signal, all of the time.

  44. Brinsley is ageing well. I had a long conversation with him, years ago, when he was also the amp tech at Chandler’s. A thoroughly nice gent and a mine of information on the workings of amplifiers. Also saw him with GP at the Marquee and Mean Fiddler, back in the late ‘80s; great player.
