  1. New short scale bass incoming so this needs to go to fund it. Now £2250 I never thought I would have to do this but since I ruptured my shoulder falling off a ladder, which resulted in a replacement shoulder operation, I struggle to play 34" scale basses for any length of time. I have therefore had to move to short scale basses and so I am selling some of my long scale instruments. So here is my 2018 Overwater Progress Series IV through neck 34” scale four string made for me by those brilliant guys in Carlisle. The body wood is ash with a walnut top and matching headstock and rosewood fingerboard. Hardware, pickups and preamp are Overwater’s own brand. Controls are volume and blend with a three band EQ. The volume knob has a push/pull application that brightens up the sound. When I had the bass made for me in 2018 I asked for the body to be chambered with the result that it weighs a mere 7.5lbs. It is a great instrument, in excellent condition, and comes with a Hiscox unbranded hard case. Sorry to see this one go but needs must I'm afraid. I must be realistic about it and accept that my limitations are not going to improve and it should go to someone who can make full use of it. The price new would be well in excess of £3,500 so I think I’m asking a fair price for it – but the market will decide I suppose. Payment by bank transfer and collection from Leeds although I am prepared to meet up within a reasonable distance from Leeds if that helps.

  2. Sunday's board looked like this The combination of the Pulp n Peel at the start and the BDI 21 at the end before the power amp was exquisite. The FI did multiple jobs from synth bass, to wah, through octaves and all points in between. A small sweet board. The chorus is the best I've tried, the Death Saw well named. I tamed it with a clean blend courtesy of the LS-2.

  3. After watching an old Led Zeppelin documentary on TV recently, I got terrible GAS for a sunburst Jazz Bass. I've had a Fender Jazz in the past - a lovely Mexi model, purchased from this very forum, but I never really clicked with it. The GAS would not go away and when I saw a beat up Aria STB Jazz bass on FaceBook Marketplace for £40, I thought that would cure it. My initial plan was to replace practically everything with shiny new bits and hope for the best. I tested it briefly and all was good, so I set about removing the many layers of stickers and filth and cleaned it up. It soon became apparent that it didn't need much in the way of upgrading... I'm not a fan of the Aria headstock shape, so out came the jigsaw and once it was reshaped and oiled, I applied my oh-so-funny trademark decals. After it was cleaned and set up, I cranked it up through my gigging rig and it sounded fantastic! Funky and articulate, just like I wish I was. Just to make sure I wasn't dreaming, I took it to both my gigs last weekend to try it out in the wild. I received no scowls from the sound engineers at the sound checks, so it got a run out. Again, it delivered the goods. Hardware is good, solid and accurate, the pickups are more than adequate and even the stock strings are great. I took them off, boiled them and put them back on as I didn't want to risk a brand new set. This thing is great. And brand new, they're only £209! For an investment of £40, plus £13 for the replacement plate and a few hours of my spare time (and an old tugbar), I've got a great sounding, cool looking instrument. If anyone is looking for a cheapo bass for whatever reason you could do a lot worse than one of these. Here's a few before and after pics:

  4. NBD - Ibanez 30TH5PE Just arrived via an ex band mate now living up in Edinburgh - was collection only from there, which would have ruled it out for me, but a stroke of luck that I had a former bandmate who has relocated to that same city, and is also often back down in London with work.

  6. 2011 Stingray Classic for sale, with original hardshell case. Features ebony fingerboard and roasted birdseye gloss neck. Excellent condition, all works as it should, including the foam string mutes on the bridge. First of all, in the interest of being thorough, a few small cosmetic issues worth mentioning: There is a scratch on the "hip" of the bass (see pic, which looks a hundred times worse than it actually is!) There are a few tiny lacquer dinks around the top edge of the headstock (see pic and zoom in) The hardshell case has had a bash at some point in one of the corners (see pic, one of the raised "fins" on the corner of the case is cracked but the case itself is still structurally sound otherwise) A couple of the pole pieces on the pickup have blackened slightly over time, purely a cosmetic issue (once again, see pics) Other than these minor issues the bass is in excellent nick and is extremely pretty indeed!😍I bought it a year ago, but have hardly played it (think I've done three gigs on it, if that!) It's mostly been played at home. Would really love to keep this but it's not getting the use it deserves and I really need to raise some funds for other pressing issues. As well as the original case, there are a pair of Ernie Ball strap locks included (pictured) I'd really prefer not to post this, but if absolutely necessary it can be posted at the buyer's expense. I'm based in Liverpool, viewing welcome. Can deliver personally, within reason, meet halfway or whatever. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Any questions, please ask away... UK BUYERS ONLY PLEASE 👍

  9. Awesome bass - great variety of tones, super powerful actives, recently set up, lovely low action. I really love the way this bass looks, the bound body is superb and drew my eye originally. Played it a few times but it's generally left in it's case - which no bass should ever do! I've spotted that there are a couple of marks on the font - really difficult to photo so I've highlighted them, there might be more but that is all I can find so any others should be smaller. Comes with original case and original Ernie ball strap locks (and I'll chuck the nice wide padded strap in too!) More photos on request. Price is + UK postage (we can decide on how it is shipped etc etc)

  12. I had already bought a used CV rosewood neck to stick on there. Might be all in the head, but it feels a little less sticky than the gloss and a little warmer sounding. The bass balances a bit better as well now with a slightly lighter neck. Think I'll keep it like this for a while.

  13. After months of trying to hunt down a EBMM Stingray shortie in the UK I finally gave up. I’ve managed to meet my shorty needs with a Sandy Lionel and Sterling ss Ray, I was a bit wary on the Sterling but I’ve concluded that some decent pots and tuners will turn it into a more than decent bass. So with some money spare i decided some Starry Night goodness was required…..

  14. Have you ever been to Marnhull? Have you even heard of it? Before I joined this band I hadn’t, but there’s an RBL club there in deepest North Dorset, and we’ve gigged there regularly, most recently being last Saturday. Its location is down a country back-road in the middle of nowhere so there aren’t any noise problems, but this time there were many ‘road’ (eg lane) closures for repair, and rumours of severe flooding in the area were rife. Anyway, I got there with no trouble and we set up in good time for a band chat and a few bevies before kick-off at 8.30. At this point the club organiser decided to alter our timings from 8.30-9.30 + 10.00- 11.00 to 8.30 – 10.00 and 10:15 – 11:30 so more raffle tickets could be sold, I think. After an exchange of views (especially as it’s the lowest-paying gig we do) we agreed to shift everything to the right by 15 minutes as a compromise, sticking to 2 x 1 hour sets. That said, the club is in a very up-together building with great acoustics, enthusiastic dancers and (amazingly) a nice green-room right next to the stage area, letting me change into my ska hat and shades out of sight before my sax set. I’m currently using the Squier Mustang bass procured from @WoodinBlack of this parish for the first set, replete with flats, changing to my H-B Mustang-a-like with rounds for the stompy second set; amp is AG700 with a Darkglass 212N 1000w cab and Nux radio link. For the saxoholics, I use my least-valuable but ear-splitting 1969 Conn 10m Tenor with Nux radio mic to ponce about with out on the dance-floor. In the end it was an enjoyable evening, with our drummer’s young teenage grandson playing ‘Wipeout’ with us to open the second set. It was his first ever public performance and that’s a real drum workout – kudos to him! My Satnav has an obsession with back-roads, so it decided to send me home via lord-knows-where to get onto a main road. This is bandit country, total darkness, no houses, and as it happened some prodigious flooding lurking around 90-degree bends, which had drowned several small saloon cars. Fortunately, the Jeep Cherokee once again justified its £710 road tax and got me through, no problem! Pix are of the stage setup pre-start with our lady singist checking the set-list, and then a long view of the hall with our promo poster!

  16. For some people it is. For me it is not. I'm under no illusion about my future but I can't live then, I can only live today. I've wasted enough years of my life in jobs I detested thank you very much. Now I'm earning what little I get on my terms. The mental health benefits alone make it worthwhile.

  19. Yeah, it's a tough one for sure. I'd like to think that some of a performance like that still lands with the audience and perhaps gets reflected on in favourable terms after the fact, but without question it can be dispiriting in the here-and-now when it's happening to you on stage. Because I was personally having fun playing with some different people in a style that I really enjoy but rarely get to take out, I was still fully invested in keeping the energy in the performance, even in the face of general apathy. If I get a call to do some more (hopefully in a more suitable venue with a more appreciative crowd and fewer pogo sticks) then we'll know it helped to sugar the pill.

  22. Pristine 2013 MIJ Jaguar bass, with the series/parallel switch and 2-band active EQ. No dings or marks of any kind, had a full service a couple of months ago with the pickups freshly refoamed. Fully shielded so doesn't suffer from the grounding problems that plagued these models. 4.4kg overall weight, only ever been played with flatwounds so has very little fret wear considering it's age. Currently fitted with a fresh set of standard gauge LaBella Deep Talking Bass flats, nowhere near broken in yet. It's got a lovely gurgling Jazz growl with plenty of scope for tonal modification. The only issue is a tiny gap at one side of skunk stripe down the middle of the neck. Asked about filling it in when it was being serviced and the tech just shrugged, they sometimes do that over time apparantly, it's not in danger of coming loose or falling out. It's not really noticeable when playing but you can feel it when you pick the guitar up. Edit: This has been filled, sanded and buffed out, it's still visible if you know to look for it and you can feel it if you run the soft pad of your thumb down the skunk stripe, but you can't notice it when playing any more. Replaced the strap buttons with outsized Gotoh ones, they're not the best lookers but are super secure, as long as your strap holes aren't gaping open there's no need for additional straplocks. Still have the original silver strap buttons, along with the original parchment pickguard. Love this axe but it's time to face the fact that my back can't support full scale guitars since I slipped a disc, every time I wear this for more than 20 minutes or so I'm in pain for days afterwards so it's time for someone else to enjoy it. Edit: and here's a couple of shots in the daylight, so you can see what it actually looks like:

  23. I've started a new health regime on the recommendations of a vicious, malicious and entirely disingenuous 'friend' who recommended a daily cold shower to blow away the effects of my chronic fatigue. It's appalling. Absolutely hellish. However, it works so I don't want to stop doing it. But I hate it. So today I hit on a new plan. Play a raucous sing a long tune while I'm in there, really loud, and hopefully distracting. It did the job. Admirably. I went for California Uber Alles by the Dead Kennedys. And it was sufficiently uplifting and helped purge me of all the appropriate emotions. Not too long either! What would you choose?

  24. The sockets get a bit mucky over time, and the contacts that normally touch when there is no jack in the socket can stop letting the signal. A short patch lead between the two sockets means you're not relying on those contacts and instead the signal travels through the cable. A squirt of electrical contact cleaner in the sockets may be enough to clean up the contacts. The lead will still probably make a better contact though, because plugging and unplugging the lead will tend to keep the contacts clean.

  26. One Cioks DC7 3d printed, (may not be 100% working ) to see how it would fit under the pedalboard. It's in white PETG as that was on the printer. As the cables for the DC7 come out of the side, it needs quite a lot of space left to right. Looks like it would fit though. I would need to design a mounting bracket for it. the DC7 comes with a miserly two screw holes on one side only. It has an optional "grip" bracket but thats for Pedaltrain boards, clearly this is not. Easiest to make two simple U shaped brackets (a very rectangular U shape in reality) and screw into the extrusions. Thats the nice thing about extrusions, no drilling, no tapping, a simple M5 bolt and associated t-nut I still might look at the Harley Benton as that has the cables coming out the front as that might be neater. The Cioks does look very good kit. Rob

  29. Hi This isn't so much a build diary as its dead easy and quick, but it might help other people thinking of making their own pedalboard. I stumbled on this modular pedalboard. I think @SamIAm might have suggested it in another thread. https://github.com/indifferentengine/ModularPedalboard/blob/main/STL/Components/Handles/3 Rail Handle/Handle.stl I liked it and downloaded the STL and Fusion 360 and put a new roll of eSun Fire Engine Red PLA+ and printed it up. It took nearly 30 hours as the printed elements need to be strong and so had an infill of 60%. However I just left it on the printer for a day or so. I got some cheap aluminium 2040 (that's 20mm x 40mm) V-slot extrusion off Amazon and simply assembled it together using T-Nuts (supplied with the 2040 pieces) and some M5 8mm bolts. Top tip, 8mm bolts are not long enough despite what the website says. M5 10mm bolts are needed as you can only get perhaps half a turn on the T-nuts. I had M5 8mm on the shelf and stupidly assumed that the designers knew what they were talking about. I also printed two handles, they come in halves and need to be glued together, that's why there is a slight gap in the picture below as I hadn't glued them. That's a job for later today. It measures 400mm x 300mm so will fit into any number of 3rd party bags on Fleabay. This is what it looks like from the side. I have ordered some plastic end stops in black. I did print some but they were a nightmare to fit so decided to buy some to cover the ends up. This is it with the pedals I have. A Peterson tuner into a Mod Dwarf and then into a Tonex amp sim.I deliberately keep this minimal otherwise I'd end up with loads of pedals that I liked but don't really use. I have space for 2-3 more pedals (if I took the handles off). Not sure if I'm keeping the handles or not yet. # As the whole design is modular, I can change this as needed into something else.I could split the four rails into two small pedal boards. There are lots of other options on the website so I can't take any credit for any work here at all. The next problem I do have and would welcome input, is the PSU for this lot. There's quite a lot of space under the top and there are designs for a PSU. However the Mod Dwarf needs at least 1.5A at 12V and preferably 2A at 12V. I can't find a single pedalboard PSU that can put anything like this out. I was hoping if I mentioned @LukeFRC @LukeFRC @LukeFRC three times, he'd come in with some clever electric ideas Thanks Rob

Nordstrand Acinonyx in white with an extra Tort pickguard, a beautifully fitting Gator Icon gigbag and 2 sets of strings. It's currently fitted LaBella Low Tension Flats, and a set of D'addario EXL 50-105 roundwounds is in the bag. Original chickenhead knob included. I have also pictured a small crack in the finish around the neck pocket... I have seen this on most of these, just for full disclosure. . . . . . . .

  32. I’m offering this stunning and all-original Ken Smith BT5 Elite from 1990. This bass not only looks incredible with its Quilted Maple top and back, but it also sounds phenomenal. Specifications: • Body: 5-piece construction (Quilted Maple top and back, Mahogany core) • Neck: 5-piece Neck-through construction, 34” scale • Fingerboard: Ebony, 24 frets • String Spacing: 18mm at the bridge • Year: 1990 • Weight: 4380g • Case: Original Ken Smith Teardrop Case included This bass hails from the earlier Smith era, known for its superb low action and exceptional playability. The frets are in excellent condition, and the neck is flawless. The gold hardware still shines beautifully, with only minor fading on the edges, which is expected from a bass of this vintage. There are a few minor signs of playwear, but nothing significant. The bass comes with the original paperwork and even the original Ken Smith strings (currently strung with DR strings). Price: €7200 €6600 Location: Mallorca, Spain

  34. This is from the soundtrack of "The Apple". The notes say that George Clinton was involved in writing the lyrics and arranging it while Wikipedia says "Coby Recht said recording the film's reggae number 'How To Be a Master' was complicated due to actual Jamaican musicians performing on the song and not being able to 'read the charts' that were in English." Bass line is legit.

  35. That's a pretty common fault when the switching jack sockets go (edit the switch is normally on the return). A small patch lead makes sure your send always goes to your return and the signal keeps running without the middleman so to speak!

  37. I followed the same path had the Monaco and traded that for a Monza. Nice and light but I use mine for backline and is is more than man enough for any gig I have done with either of my bands. One of my bands asked where the rest of my rig was when I first turned up with the Monaco, Of course I had to turn up to 5.5 (half way to 11) and was very loudly asked to turn it down. Nothing was said when I changed to the 10" Monza.

  38. Not novation, Ovation. There's more of the six-string ones floating around (as @Mykesbass says, the Breadwinner), can't remember ever seeing a bass one before. The seller really doesn't deserve to get much for it, using the AnotveryI description rather than writing one him/herself, which could include words like "rare" and "almost unique", and perhaps L@@K in the auction title like every truly informed seller does.

  46. Did a bit of a set-up "tweak" to this bass last night. I managed to get the action feeling even nicer. I wanted to give the neck a tad more relief - but the bridge saddles are at the bottom of their travels... and I can't set them any lower. However, it's set rather nicely, just as it is. There was a little string buzz / rattle at the heel end of the neck, and a close examination showed the fingerboard had a little upward slope at the end of the heel. Again, I bravely / foolishly took the sanding block to it, and gently took the level of it down a little. A bit of Lemon oil on the fingerboard afterwards, and it looked like new. It's now playing even better than before, and I'm even more pleased with my recent purchase. I could still do with selling my Precision - even though it looks lovely, it's just going to sit there, looking pretty, but unused. I am determined to make more use of this fretless bass than I did my last one, especially as I confirmed its weight with my digital scales - it's 3.5kg and that included the chunky leather strap I put on it. As you can probably gather, I am rather happy
