Never give up

 Here's a nice story......

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-68440336

TL:DR - a band records a single in the 80s, but it doesn't chart and they disband. Fast forward to 2022, a DJ picks it up in a 2nd hand shop. Plays it in clubs that specialise in 80s music in LA & Paris, a record exec hears it and the band have just been signed.

Maybe a record company will find my old bands MySpace page in 30 years time and I'll embark on a world tour......

After all that, it's a pity that the song in question is so mediocre and uninspiring, and considering that it came out in 1987, was on the cusp of being totally eclipsed by acid house, so not really surprising that it was totally ignored at the time.

I purchased  that Hank Mizell single back in the '70s Along with spinning rocjk boogie by Hank C Burnett . ( Bernett?)

I don't know the story of those . I thought they were just retro singles , or whatever the term would be . 🙂

Good grief.  I've just turned 56 and I'm feeling it this week. The last thing I'd want is to have a demo I did in the 80s come to light and the buggers trying to give me a record deal now!  That ship of opportunity has sailed for me.

What if it comes with a nice 7 figure bonus?

Little ray of sunshine!

The music may not be to my tastes but it’s a lovely story nonetheless.

There's plenty of undiscovered electronic music gems from the 80s. That record isn't one of them.

Amsterdam’s Rush Hour Records would beg to differ with your opinion it seems.

I was in that ballpark before I retired.  Unless I'm stupid, I've got enough to keep me in reasonable comfort until I drop off my perch without having to mime to my latest release on This Morning, or cut the ribbon at a new branch of HMV.

Have it been in my twenties then it would have been a tempting dream, but now I'm in the Victor Meldrew phase of my life it'd be a blooming nightmare. I'd tell them to do what they want with the recording and give the royalties to charity.

A new branch of HMV? You really must think it's still 1987. 😄

Never give up, ever. Whatever it is that rocks your world, whatever it is that feeds your soul and gives you purpose, never let go. When you’re gone, it’s over. Until then, f**k everything and do it.

S'what I tried to explain to the judge and jury, but, apparently, they don't think that it applies to killing sprees . :(

Let me see. . . . a musician is having some success and the Basschat massive isn't happy about it.

Well there's a surprise.

Yep, good luck to ‘em.

I'm happy for them. Just wouldn't be for me at that stage in life.

HMV have been opening quite a few new stores under new ownership just recently.

It may not be a great tune, and there may be countless "better" examples of 80's and electronic music out there - but the DJ and the record exec must like it, and after all, taste is an individual thing. Plus, it's also not the worst from that genre, nor that era. Best of luck to them, and this really is quite a nice story.

If anyone finds the music I recorded around that time, I will deny I had anything to do with it furiously :)

EDIT: Thanks for sharing this @Jonesy - it put a smile on my miserable old face anyway lol

Until you realise I would like a wife, children, a mortgage, enough to take care of everyone and being a broke musician is going nowhere after ten years.
