  1. I'm not playing 5 or 6-string bass much at all, so let's see if some others here are keen to play these basses that I have just lying around and then I can get something else with fewer string(s) with the money. This is a 2004 Warwick ChromeTone 5-string bass - Ebony board, bell-bronze frets, Ovangkol bolt-on neck and upgraded to brass Just-a-nut, Schaller turners and Schaller strap locks (original hardware has been kept, and will come with the bass... all perfectly functional, I just prefer the Schaller stuff). Bass is in great condition with no serious issues. Sounds really amazing, I just don't play 5-string at all these days. There are some scratches on the finish, and a couple of superficial dings, as you might expect for a 20+ year-old bass. I got this from BassConnection many years ago. Bass is at my place in Sheffield, and you're welcome to drop by and give it a play if you wish. I'm happy to post additional photos if there is interest.

  3. The story actually evolves around what comes with age. Don't ask how it happened, I don't know it just did. I didn't realize it when I left home for the show. I had put my underwear on backwards. I knew something didn't feel right by the time I arrived at the gig. I was tired and a little confused . I just said " screw it" entered the bathroom and took all my clothes off and put my underwear on correctly . Lol I guess that's rock & roll. Daryl

  5. So Pete is in Hobgoblin Music in Cambridge and has stumbled across an all-original Maya which - from a distance - is the spitting image of Macca's later bass. You couldn't make it up. And the shop want silly money for it. As in seriously silly money in the right way ... it's like stumbing back into the 1990s. What did I say? I said BUY! BUY!! BUY!!! Bridge pickup cover is still in place and doesn't bother me at all. I can play the bass perfectly happily with that in place. Someone has clearly tried to differentiate between the V/T for neck and bridge. Somewhere along the line, they've mixed up the knobs so that neck volume and tone are the wrong way round. There are no grub screws and the knobs don't just pull off so I'm not sure how to swop them around. Original trc is utterly horrible ... but it's authentic. This is a very nice piece of wood. No boxwood or ply was used here. And the tuners are quality items.

  7. In truth, it didn't start with a Spanish name. I recently joined a band that does an awful lot of Beatles stuff. It's a weird thing, but I grew up listening almost exclusively to The Beatles (essentially until I was about 15, which was 1971), they are and will always be my favourite band and the most important band in my musical life, yet I've played a ridiculously small number of their songs in all the years I've been gigging. So this band could be very important to me. I already have a 1964 Hofner 500/1 Violin bass (yes yes, I know it should be a 1963, but have you seen the prices?) so what I needed was a Rick. Do I go for an early version of Macca's bass (1965 Fireglo) or a later version (natural refin)? That's what sparked the 'Wanted' post for a decent Rickenfaker, and that produced a very nice bass from @Thor which - from a distance - is the spitting image of Macca's early bass. The hand-drawn trc in sharpie is a thing of wonder, the rather more professional fake jobbie has to go and will be replaced by a Shaftesbury trc. Bridge pickup cover has been replaced by the perspex bevel preferred by most Rick players. Reasonable amount of wear to the body, and it's the real thing rather than a pathetic 'relic' job. Tuners are much cleaner than you'd expect - usually these are covered with rust spots. Only major flaw is the nasty crack where the wing is glued to the neck-through. It's been stable the whole time that @Thor has owned it, and it doesn't worry me. Even if it gets worse it's an easy fix for any competent luthier.

  8. Posted this vid in the Roxy Music thread, but suspect he deserves his own spotlight having played in some important bands of the time - Adam & The Ants, Vibrators two name two. I think I learned more about playing bass from hearing and studying this bass line than I learned in the following 5-years. As I said in the other thread, it's tight, present, and insistent. Nothing special in itself, but it doesn't just suit the song, it drives it along powerfully. Glorious

  9. Just got home from a Spacewasters rehearsal. We only rehearse when we’ve a gig looming (2 in fact, in the next couple of weeks, both at The Water Rats in Kings Cross) just to refresh a bit. Our new guitarist is fitting in well, both guitarists working this eve on sounds and who does which lead bit etc. Plus me and both guitarists now doing backing vocals so a lot stronger in that dept which is good. Bass was JMJ Mustang into the studios - I think - Laney stack of amp/410/115, sounded great. In this band I tend to go for a more traditional supporting bass sound which I prefer to the up front/listen to me sounds I’ve had previously.

  13. 😂😂😂 I remember years ago one of the older guys i worked with came into work and after a visit to the loo he realised he'd put on his wife's underwear. The obvious Scottish sarcasm followed and when asked how he managed that he explained. "It was still dark when he woke up and didn't want to wake his wife. His underwear was in the drawer next to his wife's and he opened what he thought was his drawer and took out underwear not aware he was in the wrong drawers. (excuse the pun) He was almost retirement age so we all believed it was a genuine mistake so think yourself lucky it was only a minor mistook you made Daryl. 🤣 Not 100% sure why he even told us. ? Think i would have kept my mouth shut. Dave

  14. Slightly off that line of discussion, on Facebook today was saying they use a class D 3000W karaoke speaker for their bass at home and it sounds great. A bit of digging showed the '3000W PMPO' device as rated at 2 x 150W into 4 Ohms.

This is a 2015 Warwick GPS Corvette 6-string - Bubinga with black hardware. Wenge board, Ovangkol neck. I upgraded this to all black hardware: Schaller turners, black Schaller strap locks and all black knobs, etc. (including heavier brass bridge, which is painted black) Bass is in lovely condition with only a couple of minor dings, no issues. Sounds lovely. I got this from Seb on Basschat many years ago. Bass is at my place in Sheffield, and you're welcome to drop by and give it a play if you wish. 16. I'll be comparing the two and sharing my thoughts in time along with a full review. I'm also planning another review of the QC as there's lots to include since the last ones. I am mega pleased to see that the next OS update of the Quad Cortex is finally going to include both the amazing Cory Wong X and Parallax X plug-in, following today's announcement. I use the Cory Wong X daily and I've wanted the compressor and SSL desk model in the QC for..well, ever! Next I'm looking forward to seeing the Archetype: Petrucci X ported in too, my other daily driver for teaching, writing and recording.

  21. Moving on this tiny but mighty Genz Benz Shuttle 3.0 10T Combo. The volume and depth of tone from this thing is astonishing for it's size. I used it on a run of festivals last year as my on stage monitoring with a 5 string double bass, with a drummer and various electric folky type instruments and it didn't even bat an eye. It sounds great with electric bass too, really clear and transparent. It's an easy one hand carry, has a tiny footprint of 35 x 30 centimetres, and the head can be removed for alternative uses. It makes 175w at 8ohms or 300 at 4ohms, and has a handy little kickstand underneath to angle it upwards. It's been around the block, and has a fair few chips and scratches, but nothing major, as can be seen in the pics. Everything works as it should, knobs are smooth and noiseless (well not smooth, as they're notched, but you know what I mean), and the handle on top is solid and secure. I'm afraid I don't have anything to post it in, so £350 collected from Bushey, Herts.

  27. I'm pretty confident that I could design an aesthetically pleasing & functional 15-string bass, within the significant constraints of the design parameters imposed by that specification. I am similarly confident that it would be fitted with eleven strings that were never touched.

  31. 15 strings, if running tuning at standard intervals, is pointless. I had a 13 string bass made for me some years ago, the thickest string was a G#00 that resonated at 18hz, so right at the very very lowest range of human hearing. The highest fret of the sharpest string was right at the top end of human hearing. It also had a near unplayable fanned scale of 41" to 24" to make the strings actually function correctly. It was a bit of an experiment, and while it technically worked, going beyond 13 string is a pointless exercise unless you're using alternative tuning. Binky, my 10 string bass, is however right at the sweet spot of utterly ridiculous, completely awesome and totally useable! For those that haven't seen it, this is Binky (and my 8 string Conklin!)

  32. It's an original feature, but it's not systematic as you can have notched on the treble side, notched on bass side, notched on both sides, and not notched at all tuners. Furthermore, these types of tuners can be mixed. The interesting thing is that, thanks to these notched tuners, you can narrow the dating to the pre-CBS era, if they are squared notched tuners.

  35. There's been a bit of a development. I was talking to a band a while ago but it all went quiet. Yesterday I heard from them again and they sent over some new material and it's really good. I'm going to give it a good go, write some bass parts and see how it goes.

  36. Hi, I’m looking to sell my Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass V in black with maple neck and abalone block inlays. The controls are volume, blend, active 3 band eq, passive tone control and an active/passive switch. It takes two 9V batteries. These basses are my favourites, but I bought this as a back up for my tour rig. I currently have three of them and this one just isn’t being used really. The bass weighs approximately 4.4kg I bought this bass from Basschat in January 2024. It’s been played and toured by its previous owner and has always been fantastic and reliable whilst I’ve had it. I’ve taken it on two tours last year as a back up and have played it on a handful of shows. It’s been looked after by myself and the previous owner. There’s a couple of dings and chips on the body which I’ve attempted to photograph. I can provide more photos. It comes with the original black pickguard (I’ve placed this over the top in some of the photos) and a dark tortoise shell one which I bought to replace it because I like how they look. It also comes with the original Fender strap locks. The original Fender case has a big crack in one of the corners so I’ve replaced it with this Stagg Hardcase. If you wanted the original you can have that instead though. I’m based in Birmingham but can provide postage and packaging at the buyers expense. Thanks for looking! Michael.

  37. Coppering up for stuff so for sale is this "attic find" Been up there for years, i think i bought it with a mind to restore and practice setting up and soldering electronics etc, i never did so i still dont have a clue. Its a Korean made Kay "Gremlin" bass from the 80's in arctic white, 28" scale shortscale. Its a bit of a project, but its mostly ok. 1- The fingerboard was painted and quite worn, id started to remove (not finished) with wire wool, and ive oiled it, itll need proper sanding, ive cleaned the frets up, but may need a good dress/polish. 2- Hardware- bridge is nothing special, maybe brass, but adjusts fine. The tuners are quite loose and pitted but work fine and stay in tune. It would benefit from some newer replacements, which can be bought cheaply. 3- pickup/electrics - a sticker on the back shows its fitted with a super distortion pickup 🤣 because thats what we all want. In actuality its a beefy sounding P bass sound. Ive cleaned the jack/pots and passive electrics, and they work fine. Truss rod- i couldnt move it, but with a newish set of shortscale strings on, it has a medium action and is easy to play. Theres a bit of paint on the body, but its all clean. Its very small and light, and perfect for anyone wanting a little fixer upper, or for a child to try which doesnt break the bank, before they have a gig three weeks later and ask for an Alembic. Make no mistake, its not perfect and sold as seen, it works and theres no buzz across the range of the instrument. I will post this to you UK only very well wrapped for £45 which by the time ive paid for postage will get me a pint of craft ale. Paypal F&F please, or you cover the fees 20250329_144215_1.mp4

  44. The next thing to think about it colours. The white scratchplate was used in the early '80s on the International colours series. Below are the options I'm considering all with white pickguard and maple neck: Monaco yellow, Capri orange, Sahara taupe, Cherry burst. The others don't appeal so much - Cathay ebony and arctic white look too much like regular basses, albeit with white pickguards instead of black. Morocco red is nice but a bit too close to Dakota red to stand out. Maui blue is great but I have another Jazz in that colour, and Sienna burst just doesn't look as good as cherry burst.

  45. Very excited to hear your thoughts. I'm pretty confident ill be switching from the QC to the anagram, mostly for the smaller footprint. It'd be interesting to hear how you find the capture process if you do delve in. I'm really not a fan of DG drives and was pretty underwhelmed at how few captures are available on tone3000. I’ve been spoilt by the Cortex Cloud and almost always being able to find captures of the thing I want or at least something very similar.

  47. I put some Fender 9050 on my Lionel - the 55-105. I have had them before and I remembered why they annoyed me... The string gauges are stupid. I found the 105 to be just right and the others to be far too stiff for my tastes. In the past I've had the 45-100 and thought they were good apart from the 100 which is too floppy. So in a moment of alcohol fuelled silliness I ordered the lighter set and made up a hybrid set. So I've massively over spent... but it's still cheaper than a set of Dunlops or Dogals etc. Now it feels how I like, and they do sound very nice. But with buying 2 sets I'll be upset if I don't get 8-10 years out of them! I have no idea why Fender discontinued the good old 45-105 and the 40-100 sets, and they don't even sell the currently available ones as single strings.

  49. Fender Jazz Bass 4 bolt maple neck (1973A). Quite a succesfull design... 😉 Black binding/blocks. Very old black over walnut finish (probably factory refin as they did in those days to comply with custom orders) white 3ply pick guard. Stackpole potmeters (1973), Fender pickups (1972). This bass has been refretted and a brass nut (a trendy repkacement in the late seventies/early eighties) is restored with a bone one. The bass plays perfectly with action as low as you wanna go. Pickup output is very powerfull. This beautiful thing really is as good as an early seventies Jazz Bass is gonna get and most certainly it won’t lose value either. A nice weight of 4000 grams/8.8LBS of groovy funky jazzy coolness. Looots of Geddy Lee , Chris Squire, Larry Graham and Marcus Miller vibes. Comes with (later) Fender case
