  1. Great gig. Packed it out, crowd loved it. First time I've played with a real Hammond master AND horns. Loved it. All originals, mixture of Blues, jazz, funk and a little rocky/pop.

  2. The Nick Smith Midas charity build has taken another step forward with the high gloss finish being completed by T-Dog Customs. Toby is part of the Jaydee Bass family who all knew and loved Nick. Toby has very generously completed the finishing work on the body for free and we’re so pleased his work will be part of this special build 😊

  3. Well I'm just back from the Wakefield area and a battle through the maelstrom known as the M1, where I picked up this bitsa Jazz. It consists of a roasted Mexican Fender neck, a 'Guitar & Bass Build' high polished body, Schaller tuners, Hipshot bridge and active EMG pickups. I'll report more on the sound tomorrow when I've put some decent strings on it and set it up properly...

  4. In terms of the TM style basses, I bought this last year. One of the Thomann 70th Anniversary Electra basses but a B stock item so really good value and, Brucie bonus, I couldn't find a single thing wrong with it. The only difference I can see between this and a full fat German-made bass is the matt black finish is solid rather than transparent so maybe the Alder body is not quite as good, the tuners I think are probably slightly cheaper, the controls lack the switch to split the coils on the MM pickup. The gunmetal hardware I believe is not available in Germany (maybe you can ask for it). The neck pickup is humbucking and the EQ does have the volume that you can pull to get the passive option with the treble acting as a rough and ready tone control. Plenty of options and actually a real Swiss Army knife of a bass and weighs in at just under 4kgs. Mandatory pics.:

  5. Try learning to read music? Assuming you can't already. 20 minutes a day and in six months you won't know yourself. Two years and you'll be the best reader on Bass chat! It opens musical doors in terms of learning. There are some decent packages out there, Jeff Berlin's course is decent enough, but all you really need is a simple explanation of the basic principles and the rest is just doing it, again and again and again. What is also good about it is that you don't have to be inspired. You just have to do it. It builds technique as well as reading chops all without needing to 'think' about it. Time well spent.

  6. Fender blacktop jazz bass. Only played a few times, excellent condition. Still has tags in the hard case! Includes original fender hard case. Made in Mexico, 2013 model. Champagne/pearl colour. Purple tortoise shell pick guard. Some pick guard screws have a some rust on. Not massively noticeable, obviously easy fix. All specs can be seen in the last few pictures. Sad to get rid of it but I am no longer the bassist in a band so have little use for it. Sounds incredible, the dual split coil pick ups give an amazing tone. Can only find one like it on the internet! Any questions feel free to ask. Can be collected in Abertillery, Wales or Leamington Spa, England as back and forth a lot.

  7. This fantastic Ricky on sale gang - bought it from Bassbross in November for a project that didn't took off - it's seen about 5hrs play and has a fresh setup and strings. Can drive around Northampton and I'll be in London next Tues-Thurs - I can ship it too at your risk and expense. US Made sticker on the back of the headstock, paperwork and case in pristine condition 😃 3.9kg - super light for one of these! Hipshot bridge which is a significant upgrade over the usual stock one too...! Ander.

  10. There's a bit of a challenge involved, @Jimothey Generally (although @RonC 's intriguing Safran breaks the rule ), the pickups are in the body area and the fretboard...and the strings...sit higher. As such, the distance from the strings to the coils (which is where most of the ooomph of a pickup happens - the poles themselves have a fairly modest impact) can be excessive and affect significantly the strength of the signal. On @TheGreek 's Psilos Bass that @SpondonBassed refers to, I also was able to break that general rule by making the top of the bass part the fretboard...

  11. First run through last night for a side project that supports the Hulla band at their festival every year. It's a subset of the main band and we only play the one gig each year. The rehearsals are usually few and far between as everyone has other things they are doing, but its worked out well in the end each time we've done the gig. Last night was meant to be just a chance to go through some of the songs, see what's working and what isn't, settle in our newest member on sax and set the scene for the rehearsals to come. We warmed up with some songs from last year's set and then, completely unplanned, decided to give 'Baker Street' a go. It was on the 'possibles' list but we were going to leave it for a separate session as none of us have played it before. The sax player was quite nervous about doing it but it's a fun, relaxed atmosphere so we went ahead. And after one dodgy start we played a pretty good version all the way through until we realised we didn't know how to end it. 😀 The drummer has a purpose built soundproofed rehearsal space in his garden as he's quite busy with several big bands and depping work. It's just big enough for 5 people to squeeze in. I used my BAM200 into his 1x15 cab and my Ibanez EHB1000s to save hitting people with my headstock.

  13. https://www.hartke.com/products/amplifiers/tx-series-amplifiers/tx7500/ Stumbled across this last night. Looks to be Hartkes new take on the HA range but completely solid state and missing the filters. Visually the design reminds of Acoustic amps and I do like it in a very retro early 90s sort of way. Will be interested to see how it sounds. I have the LH1000 at the moment, which is a very reliable, loud and good sounding amp so unlikely to change but would be interested to check it out.

  14. Hi every one. On offer elsewhere now so reduced to £390 Bass Only. Prices now FIRM. Specification screenshot photos now added ( forgot to include! ) Photo added of narrow epoxy resin bridge plate curve correction ( cosmetic only) £390 for just the bass ( plus cheap new gig bag and UK mainland delivery ) £405 with your choice of D’Addario nickels or steels 45 65 85 105 which fit this bass through body. Let me know if you would like the spare bridge pickup mentioned below , add £35 so £440 gets you Bass, Strings, spare Bridge Pickup. ( V Slight wear to current cover under E and A Strings. Minimal) I bought this 2020 beast of a bass from Mudpup late last year and absolutely love the variation of tones achievable with the Bartolini MK1 pickups ( they are both reverse P pups inside the soapbar covers ) and 3 band Bartolini MK1 pre amp. Electronics , truss rod and hardware all working as they should. Specifications listed in the photos, also some Cort site info there. The 2 way switch is for Active/Passive - In passive mode the battery still powers the pickups signal but bypasses the 3 band and gives a more organic tone than the active 3 band pre amp can produce. So it is indeed the passive tone of the pickups but then powered to the jack socket. People often state that the passive tone is the “ same as active with the BMTreble controls at centre detent “ - it’s just their opinion but it doesn’t describe how good the passive sound is and misleads people to thinking you might as well not bother flicking the switch at all. It definitely is ! Upgraded previously so it sports a set of silver satin headed USA made Hipshot Ultralite tuners AND matching Detuner.( Check out BD tuner prices , 180 for these 3 and the Xtender vs standard non usa licensed set approx 80 , then sell those. ) These get the weight down to 3.96kg , 8lbs 12oz ( photo of scales ). I’ve since stumbled on another bass , the same model but a few ounces lighter. Definitely in the Senior age group I just prefer a lighter bass these days and , playing at home only , I can grab a Fiver rather than detune (and have to learn a song another way) so someone else can make better use of this upgraded tuner set. I can easily remove the silver fretboard markers and black ones which cover the original inset abalone ones which are shown in some of the pics. Let me know. I’ve made two cosmetic renovations to this bass which look neat and blend nicely with it’s rugged blue/black/ hippy purpley flamed looks. I used acrylic paints to go over the body top edge , at the forearm rest area which was noticeably rubbed pale ( photo). So it was the finish rubbed off rather than any wood wear. Body edge just south of the bridge too. Pretty good match and a final matte acrylic lacquer coat so this is durable and , being water based, you or I can reverse this finish with some rubbing with a damp piece of cotton cloth. I know because I took 3 attempts to be happy with it ! 😁 It blends in fine , and your arm covers it when playing anyway. The Hipshot bridge’s base plate casting rear end curve was not symmetrical. Purely cosmetic again but it was driving me nuts so I used epoxy resin ( “Steel”) which worked a treat. Great adhesion to the metal and then easy to fine finish and shape. It’s only a small visible silver painted area and sits well with the other parts of the bridge. The correct shape now matches the body recess curve. See last photo (just added ) to show the dark grey small epoxy resin build before I silver painted it. Replaced the pickup screws and black dome headed machine screws which were worn. It’s loaded with D’Addario Pro Steels, only light use. There’s no visible fret wear and the 2020 spec Panga Panga ( a type of Wenge ) board has a good looking parallel grain all along it. Nice and dark. The only slight wear is under the E and D strings on the bridge pickup cover towards the neck side. I collected this bass from Mudpup and didn’t notice the cover wear until I got home so it’s not unsightly. The photo angle taken exaggerates the issue. Not uncommon when a raised pup is preferred ( Steel strings used too ) and I’ve seen it on a neck pickup before. I lowered the pickup a little and don’t play hard. No problem. These Bart covers are tough plastic and a good 2mm thick. I do have a spare used , unmarked and perfect working order bridge MK1 pickup (Bartolini label is T for treble) which you can have for £35 ( my cost price) which you could fit. That came from someone else’s A4 too. ( 108mm x 34mm) A very comfortable bass. Nice volute on the neck. 38mm at the nut. String spacing at saddles is just under 19 mm ( 56mm E to G centres ). No neck dive ( small head stock ) and the matte finish all over ( inc neck ) feels as cool as it looks. 😎 All very clean , so ready to pick up and play. UK mainland delivery included with Fedex. I’ll double box with inner and outer cardboard boxes or cheapo but new gig bag. Specification below after 3 photos. Later photos of bass on a towel are when I first received it and before I’d thought of painting over the worn areas, so you can see how the body edge was had a dark edge around the butt end. Wiring diagram for Sparkies, has A6 noted but the same set up. Bartolini MK1 pups and Pre. I have sets of either - D’Addario EXL165SL 45 65 85 105 Nickel plated round wounds or their Pro Steels EPS165 which also fit the bass through body. £420 with a spare set of those. The Pro Steels on it haven’t been used much and remember those USA Hip Shot Tuners and the free UK insured mainland delivery. Thanks for looking and have a good Easter. Quent

  15. Maybe a little known fact, but the Marshall factory (Milton Keynes, Bucks) has a small 'museum' of amps, guitars etc in and around reception. Although it is primarily for the guitar nerds, in amongst the Les Pauls and Bluesman amps are a few pieces of Bass memorabilia, with pride of place going to the irredeemably individual Lemmy.

  16. 'finished' my new home/mini board. Covers loads of ground and intention is to drive either my own power amp or use when I need to travel light. It's a rock board 2.1 and powered by gigrig. I may change the muff for an mbd 3 still in time, depending on how my feet fit the gaps on the board. See how it goes anyway....

  18. Good Spacewasters rehearsal last night for a gig tonight at The Hope & Anchor, Islington. Lineup swap, our old guitarist standing in for one of the guitarists who’s on hols. Good sounds& playing tho have to admit I wasn’t keen on the supplied Orange bass combo, but it did its job. Also tried ear-plugs but couldn’t pitch my vocals with them in so compromised and just had one in the ear that faces the drums - it’s the cymbals that wreck ears!

  19. I hit this problem when the first lockdown happened - suddenly I had loads more time (no commuting) but found I lacked the motivation to do the things I’d always wished I had time for. What helped me was starting a Bullet Journal, and I still do it now. I use it just for the fun stuff (bass, guitar, keyboard, singing, electronics) but many people use it for all aspects of life. I note down (in ‘spreads’ - see video) things I want to try, improve on, buy, sell, build, repair, whatever. At the end of each day I give myself 2 or 3 things to do the next day - I don’t always get them done, but every day I have a record of the small steps I’ve made to reach my goals. It’s a way to: - Track your past - Organise your present - Plan your future Here’s a good place to start:

  25. Thought I'd post a photo of my trio. weight wise.. TT 3.6KG VS SL 2.7KG And the monster TM 4.9 KG. Which is loaded with a SD humbucker! The old style TM is the winner for sound and playability for me, slightly fatter neck than the California ii's , but a bit too heavy for regular gig use. Interestingly it seems the TT is loaded with splitcoils and not singlecoil. Kind of darker sound for a jazz to my ears.

  26. Around October last year our friend Nick Smith came to see us about having another bass made but to his design of shape which he called the “Midas” We lost Nick in January in a tragic accident before we got past the design stage of his new bass. However he had selected all of the woods and we’d gone through the detail on the spec that he wanted. Following Nicks funeral at the end of February Gav and I felt it was only right that we finish Nicks bass, and after seeking approval from Nicks family we decided that it would be fitting that once complete we would hold a raffle or auction with all proceeds going to a charity close to Nick and his families hearts. Over the last few weeks we’ve been progressing through the manufacture of Midas number 1. And over the next week or so we’ll share the photos and videos of its progress so far. This video shows the design of the bass, technical specs follow “Greenie” the Kratos he had from us a few years back which had become Nicks main gigging bass for Genesis Connected. It features a one piece ribbon sapele body with a beautiful book matched flame maple top, flamed maple one piece neck with ebony fret board, Aguilar HJ pickup and 18v preamp, led fret board side dots, Grainger bridge, hipshot tuners and Evo Gold frets! Once the details of the charity raffle are tied down we’ll post on how it’ll all work, but we should have Nicks Midas done within the next 6 weeks! Stay tuned for more updates! 27. Up for sale is my Ibanez BTB400QM, finished in transparent Blackberry. A really nice to play 35" scale, 18v active [with 3-band EQ] four stringer. These sound much better balanced than the SR series preamps. A huge sonorous sounding bass with plenty of character. Some slight dings here and there, but overall a nice bass for around 20 years old. The top horn strap button has been screwed into a new hole right next to the original by a previous owner for some reason, but this can easily be filled/covered up. Electrics all work properly and action is nice and low. An old Warwick gigbag will be thrown in with the sale. Strung with brand new D’Ddario 45-100 strings. Payment via cash or direct bank transfer on collection. Can deliver or meet half way, up to a reasonable 75 miles from DE7.

  30. Seven years ago I had an attack of Bell’s Palsy (facial paralysis), my vision was affected to the extent of not being able to drive or cross a busy street safely. To keep me going a generous guitarist friend came around to my house once a week and we played away acoustically, or quietly plugged-in, for a couple of hours. We even had a go at writing songs for the first time. I really looked forward to the sessions and they kept me going, musically, until my recovery. I hope you’ve got some pals like that. Good luck with the recovery and keep on rockin’ !

  31. Just approach it just like a fretted bass, so don't try and make it sound like a fretless and do lots of slides and trying to get that mwah sound. It is no different to play than a fretted bass, you just have to be more disciplined with your technique and train your ears. Good ears and strong technique are the two key things you need to play a fretless well. Don't be scared of it either or think of it as different, just play what you'd play on a fretted and you'll be amazed at how normal sounding it can be. Over time, you'll then start to bring out the nuances of the fretless as you become more competent. The Jack Cassidy is also an unlined fretless so you either play ON the dots or in the gaps, it's that easy. Oh and buy an octave and chorus pedal, you'll thank me later I promise 😂

  32. When I had Hodgkins, I continued playing in the band and scheduled rehearsals for the days before the next treatment when I was going to feel better. We didn't gig much anyway so that may not be fair on your band if you'd be stopping them gigging. I walked a lot. I find that physical activity changes your mood, from 'sitting in the sofa watching TV' mode to 'doing something' mode.

  33. This bass was finished in November 2004 and is in excellent condition. It has the 10/90 neck with the most beautiful flame maple. The neck is the thinnest I have ever played and fretwork is excellent. The body has an ash core with really thick flame maple caps, front and back. Bass is all original with no issues. Kahler bridge, Schaller machine heads and Benedetti single coil pickups, Vigier 18v preamp. It comes in a semi-hard Gear4Music shaped case which is in excellent condition, and really good quality for a budget case. Weight is 3.7kgs

  35. Don’t put your mind or body under and pressure! I agree with Bilbo’s advice above. I am currently learning how to play classical double bass (where you have to read music and play with a bow). It’s a completely different instrument and approach, but it’s transformed my electric bass playing, and improved my jazz sight reading. Whatever you do, ensure it’s fun. Sounds like you need a bit of that…

  36. So sad to hear. I had a couple of meet-ups with Sam and, as anyone else who did, felt as though I'd known her for years after our long chats. One time in snow and ice at Thurrock services and we both got frozen We all know that Life isn't fair and Sam certainly had her hand dealt from the bottom of the deck.

  45. Yes. Melodyne is very good. I haven’t tried AutoTune yet 🫣 Getting used to it- I had a Harley Benton short scale fretless that sounded wonderful, but seeing as I’m trying to play upright bass as well, the jump in scale lengths was one step too far and the more I played one if them, the more out of tune I seemed to get on the other! Everything seems to fall into place easier for me on the standard scale fretless. That said, playing along to other tracks still show that there’s work to be done! One thing I find helps quite is to ensure that you’re playing your FRETTED bass on top of/just behind the fret - ie. at essentially the correct position for a fretless. Muscle memory becomes much easier then, as you don’t have to change your technique as much when switching basses.

  46. The online course option really drove me forward in terms of motivation. Specifically Jaymes Bass Academy because there are monthly challenges that keep me interested and give me something to work on for the month (as well as the courses). Jayme is also reasonably active on the forum giving feedback etc.

  47. Sometimes you see people listing a bass as a "65 Jazz per example, and tell how you hear 60 years of ageing back in the sound. Reading further it appears only the body and tuners are original. I understand when a seller would say "all original apart from (enter a maximum of 1 or 2 aspects)". It makes less sense when the list of changed parts is bigger than the list of original parts.
