Another wedding close to home and miraculously another broken limiter 🙏 Overall a good night, the highlight being a pissed up woman hovering over our equipment with a large full glass of wine. When I asked her to keep drinks away from the stage she proceeded to straight up down the glass 😂 fair enough... Used my rocky bass after my wife complained I don't use it enough after she took the time to paint it!14 points

Private 60th party in Boness for BLOCKBUSTARZ last night. These events can be hit or miss as not everyone likes Glam Rock. 1st set was odd as we had dancers up on songs that don't usually trigger a dance spree but if it works then go with it. You generally know what songs will trigger the dancers but last night it was just odd. We've played this venue quite a few times now and many had seen the band before so maybe that had something to do with it. Sound on first set just wasn't quite right. 2nd set we all upped the volume a tad and WOW there it was our usual sound. For some stupid reason they arranged the tables with the kids all at one large round table in front of the band and across the dance floor from us. Kids struggle with band volumes and altho we were sympathetically playing at a lower volume i find it reduces the atmosphere a touch if a band is too quiet. The kids soon got used to it tho and were soon dancing with balloons on the floor in front of us. 2nd set was great fun and everyone enjoying themselves. We even threw in a new song Ziggy in 2nd set to see how it would work and as soon as we started we got quite a response with phones out and people watching us with a great applause at the end but no dancers so we moved straight onto Jean Genie that filled the floor again. (weird !) Anyways i decided to go with my Sandberg Marlowe for this one and all was going well until 2-3 songs from the end 1st set i noticed my volume dropped right off. No idea why but switched the comp off and bang the sound came straight back to normal. Comp was set to just a basic limiter to curb over-active fingers. Will need to look at that today altho i didn't really need the comp as 2nd set went perfectly without it so i may just ditch it. Mesa TT800 in Mesa SW210/115 cabs. Lots of appreciation at the end and over-hearing comments of "that band were fecking brilliant" certainly made us feel very pleased as we packed up our gear. Party boy was fair chuffed with the band too. We were offered tea / coffee or soft drinks thru the night and some folks even chapped the small dressing room door and asked if they could buy us a drink which was nice. We were told to help ourselves to the party buffet but we feel a bit odd doing that as we are already being paid a decent fee to be there. They even offered us a doggy back when we were packing up which again was nice. Home by 1:15am so not too bad. That's it for gigs in April. May things pick up a fair bit tho. Been asked about possible future bookings but that was probably just the booze talking but you never know. Dave14 points

Just home from another near 400 mile round trip to Felixstowe today, with the Live Tribute Show at the Spa Pavillion Theatre. Fantastic gig with a full house. Maybe the nice weather/Easter holiday brings them all out? Used the American Performer Mustang for the first set tonight. It punches well above it's diminutive weight. Consider me impressed. The start of the second act saw the Buddy Holly tribute's guitar cable die, but luckily I had a spare cheap lead plugged into a Pitch Black Tuner on a table in the wings, so he only ended up missing half of the Everly's "Cathy's Clown". Thursday was the Lowther Pavillion Studio in Lytham St.Annes near Liverpool. Another full house and another 2am return home. Thankfully some down time now for a couple of weeks, while I wait for my 85 year old Father to be discharged from hospital after a Stoma operation early last week.14 points

Great gig with Jagged Little Alanis, at the Essex Arms in Brentwood - nice venue, a real stage! Used the Rikkers and the current mega-pedalboard, which I'm going to cannibalise a little for a more targeted one for this band 😄12 points

Had a dep gig in a tiny ale house in Chorley, was going through an amp for a change which I've not done in years, enjoyed it even though I made a couple of mistakes (they play every song in a wildly different key from the original) and the TC BH800 and PJB C8L sounded great on stage. Was thinking about swapping out the preamp in my Cort GB Modern 5 but after tonight I'll leave it in and tweak my Fishman DI a bit more for IEM gigs.12 points

A bitter / sweet gig this one (Chateauroux in France) 18 original compositions from a good friend who's now sadly very limited with regards to time left. 10 pce band and I only know one of them, two days of rehearsal, live recording third day and public concert on the last night. Quite an honour to be asked to provide the low end. Fingers crossed I don't mess up🤣11 points

Well, having just recently sold a Precision (and one I really liked at that), I've gone and got another one. Moreover, I had one of these before, and sold it, partly to "upgrade" to a Fender.... so it's full circle, again 😉 Actually, I previously owned 2 of these earlier versions of the Squier Classic Vibe P basses; one in pale blue, and the other in Fiesta Red. I swore blind I'd never sell either - but I was tempted away by other basses. Selling my CV's only in attempt to keep the numbers down. Anyhow, I really did miss both, especially the Fiesta Red version as it had become my fave colour, with Tort guard. My upgraded Fiesta Red P was a Mex Classic 50's, and I really liked that too. However, the slightly wider neck was beginning to feel less comfortable. So I found myself wishing it had a slightly narrower neck, like the CV. So local BC'er and top bloke Lewis put this up for sale, and I decided to swing by and take a trip down memory lane, and I was instantly taken back to the enjoyment I got, playing my old CV. It's a tad heavier than the Danelectro, or the Short Scale Ibanez I mostly gig with these days - but what the heck... I just decided to go for it. I can always use it for a first set, then switch to the Dano for the 2nd set anyway, eh? Will I ever learn? Probably not11 points

Yeah baby that's what I'm talking about 😜 Yesterday's office, Korg clip on tuner ➡️ Ibanez UB804 ➡️ Swiff Audio wireless ➡️ Ampeg SVT + 8x10. It was a livestream thing for Hot Vox Rising - Warchild Charity. The 'gig' was done to camera, on a multi camera set up soundstage. No audience apart from the techs. But they seemed to enjoy it. I'll post some footage/link when it's available. Arrived at 3:30pm. Done and away by 5:45pm. Pics during setup:11 points

Yesterday The Royal Blues, at The Royal George, Soho, that London. It was an open mic night, the promoter actually said we're too good for that kind of thing now, but he gave the band our first gig so we didn't mind. It filled up considerably when we were on, then was noticeably less full for the House band who finished the night off. We had a new backing vocalist. Myself and the drummer hadn't met her prior to the gig, but she nailed her parts. Another Eagles tribute show in Hexham, Northumberland. Nice to have a monitor after persevering with IEMs at the last gig. Old school, but.. I prefer it. Also used my new Jazz for a bit. It's lovely, but I’m not sure stacked knobs - or white - is for me. We'll see. Next stop... Rotherham!9 points

Hi All, Had a punt on an auction site yesterday and ended up winning. Soon I will take delivery of a 1975 Fender Musicmaster in what was once Olympic White. All original except for the pickguard, which the previous owner has swapped out for a custom cut stainless steel one (ngl, don't hate this!) Given it wasn't anywherenear expensive as I thought it might be, I'm in two minds as to whatto do - keep her as is, or make it a project bass. I do quite dig the Mojo on this bass in terms of it's look. But I'm also intrigued by the thought of doing it up. Options I'm considering are: sanding it back and respraying it in another colour from the period - Daphne Blue or Dakota Red. Would add a white plastic pickguard and maybe strat knobs and a tugbar too. Then theres the pickup. Keep it stock or add something like a Curtis Novak pickup that sounds a bit more familiar. Would love a lipstick style pickup. Then, do I make it my only bass with flats? Oh the possibilities... Keen to hear thoughts/suggestions on this ☺️8 points

Played with the blues band in a tiny pub in Lanark. Didn't take many people to fill it so an enthusiastic audience of thirty created a great atmosphere. One downside was the access to the toilets door being immediately behind us. Two songs before the end of the first set I was aware of a most unpleasant honk emanating from said direction. Thankfully the air had cleared by the start of set 2. Man alive, it was grim for a while.8 points

Last night with Nine Lives at the Harbour Lights in Peterhead. Probably the best gig we've had there - reasonably well attended with a few repeat customers. Played pretty well, the usual little fluffs but nothing song derailing. Best part for me was how well the Brainwaves pitch shifter performed - the sound quality is much better vs. the Hotone Harmony because even when playing -3 semitones there's none of the warbling/slightly underwater quality that the Hotone excusably has (it was less than £50 after all). And the "fake guitar" thing (as in 50:50 wet/dry mix, voice 1 = +7 semitones, voice 2 = +12 semitones) plus overdrive from the Joyo Monomyth produced a deliciously rorty sound - enough to elicit a look with puffed out cheeks from the guitarist across the stage from me and positive comments afterwards from both the guitarist and the singer. Drummer probably didn't appreciate getting his hair blown back by the rear port, but he just doesn't like it when someone makes more noise than he does Gear was the Epiphone Em-bassy Special IV then the Epiphone Thunderbird '64 into the usual Markbass toan cubes. Hiding the spaghetti: I am changing this pedal-board layout much too often to commit to tie-wraps and the like. So I attached a piece of cover of a document organizer with velcro and a gaffer-tape 'hinge'. This is a Pedaltrain JR, I cut off the 'rail' at the back to make it more flat (I prefer that because of the expression pedal) and smaller. This pedal-board is for an 'eclectic punk' duo (drums, bass, 2 x vocals). With the expression pedal I add a secondary (parallel) distortion with delay, reverb, pitch-shifter, sound-hold and/or chaotic effects from the Boss Core.7 points

It's that time again 👌 Going to use the new 0xEAE Bass Driver as a preamp, much like the Rusty Box. Currently playing with the Mother in front but really like how it takes the Dagger and Black Math too. Going to start popping it on the board now Im pretty happy with the order. Its extremely clanky in here. UPDATE Had a little more time than expected so I got it all wired up. Think it'll stay like this for the foreseeable until I've had chance to experiment with upcoming musical endeavours and maybe I’ll downsize to essentials. We had a 0929 Saturday rehearsal too - 2nd one with our new guitarist. We told him not to worry about playing what our old guitarman did, to make it his own, and it's definitely got punkier, though in a good way! His rhythm playing is excellent, he improvises little bits of twiddle here'n'there where before there was nowt, and now there's a bit more sparkle. He's young (well, 30s!) too! Not only that but I've got him to duplicate some of my linking bass runs that were previously lost under a power chord - it'll add to tightness and interest. Though when I asked him how well he knew his modes as we had a tendency to slot in (more than) the occasional Phryge (😁) he said " I thought I was joining a punk band!" to which we all chanted in Gregorian "punk is in the eye of the be-ho-ol-der!".5 points

Hi all, For sale (no trades), this great example of the MiM Classic Series basses. Bought from here a few months ago to have as an option with flats, but I’m not using it a great deal, and I snaffled a used Nash bass shortly after that’s now my go-to instrument. I swapped the tort scratchplate for an antique white one; I’ll include the tort with it. It’s a classic P-bass width neck that’s a bit shallower than normal - very easy to play! Frets have some sign of wear but lots of use in them still. Body is in great condition with the only obvious ding on the top edge. Tried to photograph it but it’s not that clear; will try again later. Selling for what I bought it for, plus you get the extra scratchplate. These seem to go for £650 - £750 online and this model - along with the nitro finish roadworn - are well regarded in forums. I’d rather not deliver but I can add a hard case in for a few quid more for postage at buyer’s cost and risk if needs be. I’m in Bristol but often in Cheltenham or Gloucester so could meet in one of those places outside work hours. Thanks for looking, Al4 points

Reluctantly selling my Aria Pro II SB1000 from 1981. It’s in excellent condition for a 44 year old bass. All original with original full sizes case. Ash body, walnut finish, original electronics with no issues. Maple neck with ebony fretboard. Small ding on top side of neck at 11th fret (pictured). Currently strung with DR Black Beauties. Original case shows signs of wear and is serviceable, but I wouldn’t use it for day to day gigging. Weight - 5kgs. It’s heavy. But if you wear it high, in the 80s position as originally intended, the weight is not an issue!3 points

I cannot believe a search of Marillion on the forum turns up nothing other than Word Ascociation and possibly a post by @Marillionred about a gig at the Albert Hall. Currently sitting in a Café in Paris having a beer. Just spent two nights at the Paris Marillion weekender. By luck I'm in Paris for the marathon tomorrow and managed to get tickets via facebook a month ago after they'd sold out. What an awesome show. Three weeks ago I managed to see Mr Punch at Camden Underword, again Facebook fed me something on the morning of the gig. For Fish era Marillion, comoelte with theatrics, they're amazing. Seen them twice now. I turned down tickets to see Marillion in 1984! And this is the first time I've seen them. Absolutely phenomenal gig. Anyway Pete Trewavas, doesn't get a lot of mentions. Ever. And is a big influence on me. Am I the only one, or am I rubbish at the search.3 points

Just back from gig #2 of the weekend. Quite sleepy. Gig #1 was Wednesday’s Child - pub rock covers - in Dorking last night. We were under-rehearsed and the guitarist was far too loud onstage, so I came away feeling quite underwhelmed with it. I think I played ok, was fun switching between a standard tuned bass, a C-tuned bass and a fretless 5 - kept me on my toes! Need to go through all my patches and sort them out though as I noticed some hideous volume differences between some of them 😳 Gig #2 was Youths - original pop/punk - in Canterbury this evening. We opened the proceedings and played a blinder I think. Bass sounded ace - my first ever bass came out (a Vester Jazz with replacement Schaller pickups), through an HX Effects using the SansAmp clone, into my Elf and the headliner’s Markbass 6x10. Hope this is not a thread hijack, but I thought I'd give a bit of commentary on my '94 SR890. Photo shamelessly stolen from the seller: I've always liked Ibanez stuff, and I've been on a bit of a mission to own styles of basses that are new to me, so the venerable Soundgear was on my list. This one had been for sale for months, and it was one of those situations where I looked at loads of different SRs, budget, high end, old, new, then came back every few weeks, and um'd and ah'd over it! Finally decided to take a punt a few months ago. I was initially underwhelmed with the sound, it had lower output than I would expect from an active bass, noisy preamp, lacking low end, and I had an issue where the volume of the A string was significantly lower than the others. I fiddled with it, checked the nut and saddle, changed the pickup heights, changed the strings, etc, but to no avail, so I could only assume there was an internal problem with the pickup. On checking the electronics I found green corrosion, so that was the final straw, I was doing a pickup swap! I settled on a Wilde (Bill Lawrence) PJ set (P-46 and J-45 pickups). I'd been previously impressed with Wilde guitar pickups so this was a good opportunity to try the bass offerings. Bill Lawrence's designs seem to share a "hi-fi" family sound which I felt would suit a contemporary bass (well, it's a 1994 model, so might be stretching the definition of "contemporary" there 😆). To keep a lid on costs I decided to pair them with an Artec SE3P-A preamp. (Had cost been no object I'd probably have gone with the obvious choice - EMGs) Long story short, I got the bits and pieces in but the preamp was a tight squeeze - I knew when ordering that it would be borderline. I lived with it for a while but didn't find the EQ options to be particularly useful - I tend to be a "set it and forget it" person when it comes to preamp settings - so that plus the tight fit led me to decide to go passive. I'm very glad I did - it's like a taking a veil off everything and the P-46 in particular is a monster. But I now have the issue of what to do with one of the holes I have it wired volume volume master tone. I may try a low cut like on a G&L. Or just a dummy pot! I also made a weird judgement in choosing this bass as the one I'd try with TI flats (I was going through a flats phase). I came to the conclusion that this was not a good combo and popped D'Addario rounds back on. At last I was moving towards the SR sound I had in my head! One peculiarity IMO is that the J pickup is very close to the bridge. I don't consider it to be a usable tone by itself, less low end than 60s jazz spacing, but it definitely adds some good overtones to the P pickup. There remains some setup to do. I had the neck shimmed but I still feel string height could be lower. A bass like this should be pretty effortless to play IMO. So we might be looking at a proper fret level and more shimming at some point. I'm clearly well into the sunk cost due to fiddling fallacy here, but I'm convinced there's a great bass waiting to get out!3 points

Just my2cent from limited experience with a few bass that come with empress body(mtd, Alleva coppolo) It is very transparence and balanced Have good attack Work great with active electronic and heavy voicing pickup if you are clear on what you need. A bit of a trade off, with the less mass/light weight, it can be very loud but empty Have less bottom compare to mahogany, Less punch then ash. A few twist on amp would sort it out.3 points

Reading this it looks like we aren't doing too badly - 18 booked in for the remainder of 2025, with a few more expected. We're a (hobby) pub covers band playing the north Kent coastal towns plus a couple of local festivals, all with maximum drive of 20 miles to a venue. For me about 24 gigs a year is ideal, two a month keeps it fresh but allows time for rehearsals and to add new material. This year's set is 50% changed from last year which keeps us (me!) on our (my!) toes.3 points

Just rebuilt and added a few pedals to my pedalboard, My signal path: Peterson strobostomp HD MXR bass compressor MXR bass M80 DI+ Headrush MX In the FX loop Strymon bluwsky GFI system Skylar Then, because when I'm home i sometimes record using my bass into Ableton and would like to use the stereo feature in both the MX5 and the reverbs, but also like to actually hear the bass vibes, i have an Yamaha FR speaker behind me, so i then run into the Yler ABY pedal so i get 3 cables out of my board, 1 mono back to the Yamaha FR, and a y-cable stereo running to my sound card it has to be said that and i have no clue what, but there is somekinda error in my board, all the pedals work perfect when testing one by one, but when i activate the FX loop in the MX5 i get so much latency that Yousician that i normally use to play along with, regestre my notes as so late in fail the note, and i simply do not know whats wrong, it does not seem to be the cable a 2x TR jack to 1x TRS Y-cable into my Motu M2 sound card, you can't hear the latency, but you can clearly see it on the small LCD display on the M2 and see the hit registration error in Yousician, a guy from Thomann said it was because i had too many digital pedals on my board, but i don't get it, i have seen much much bigger boards that seemingly had no problems3 points

Hi Folks, Now *** SOLD *** Background Bit of an unusual one, this, so here goes... So, at the 3rd time of trying, I have realised that fretless bassis not for me. Hence why this is now up for sale. It's a 1970s (or possibly early 80s) Maya Precision bass in superb condition, completely stock, and comes with its original case and some of the case candy. The only thing that's not original (AFAIK) is that, at some point in it's life, it's been defretted. As I hope the photos show, it's a bit of a stunner, but when I bought it, it wasn't playing very well. So, I I took it to my local luthier, Nick Hartel in Letchworth, who's done a fabulous job on it so that it now plays beautifully (very happy to share his report on the work he did btw) . I bought this on Facebook last autumn thinking it looked totally cool, and it would be the perfect fretless to get me going so that I could discover my inner 'Mick Khan' or 'John Giblin'.. But sadly, that dream is now over - I just don't enjoy the fretless sound/vibe enough to persevere with it. The guy I bought it from is a very credible guitar dealer in Suffolk and here's what he had to say about it: "Very rare and collectable Japanese bass from the golden era of MIJ quality. Maya instruments are up there with the other highly regarded names, quality hardware, proper woods and built by people who knew their business. This is one owner from new, converted to fretless in the 1980s, in the original case with the tools and booklet for the top class adjustable tuners. A few bumps and marks but nothing major, a Japanese quality instrument for Chinese Squier money..." New Price as of 12.06.25 = £395 (All in all, this has cost me £460; £295 when I bought it and £165 in luthier fees. So, based on that outlay and the fact that it's a real nice, all original vintage MIJ, high quality instrument, I've priced it at £395 or near offer.) Trades I've had a rethink on this so, could now be tempted by a nice electro-acoustic 6-string, or an all valve head maybe, interesting pedals, studio gear... Who knows? Whatever - I'm open to having conversations with anyone who might have any interesting trade offers. Collection /meet ups Collection in Potton, east Central Bedfordshire much preferred, though I could do meet up anywhere between here and Ealing, London, where I work. Or indeed, a meet up within an hour's drive from me in any other direction. You're very welcome to come and have a play of the bass through my Mesa Walkabout combo (or your own amp/cab) here in Potton.. Kettle's always on, with plenty of tea /coffee available. I can also confirm this head kicks absolute butt. I put it up against my Darkglass AO900 head and honestly, the Laney cleaned up. Such a colourful tone that's easily scooped into whatever you need. I think that everything is playable, it's just a question of how long you are prepared to spend on it. Jaco took 9 years to nail Donna Lee. I gave up on HMWYRS because I decided the time would be better spent on other things. There is a tasty Al Di Meola guitar part on Suite: Golden Dawn from his first solo album. Impossible. It took me 30 years but I got there!! It's a question of how much you are willing to invest to get the thing nailed.2 points
