What’s your home practice setup?

Recommended Posts

Bass (mostly fretless Jazz) - pedalboard - zoom 607 as a headphone amplifier, I’m toying with an EHX headphone amp as they’re battery powered too, and significantly smaller. The 607 is a lot of fun though.

I'm fortunate enough to have a man-cave/studio/office daaaaaaaaaan the bottom of the garden, so naturally have rammed it fully of crap. Does mean that I can blast through the Marshall VBA at full volume or smash the drums to pieces without anyone hearing/caring!

Usually though, it'll be an ACG 6 of some sort through a Helix and into an Epifini UL901 and Bergantino 410. 👍

Unplugged for me. Plenty loud enough to hear what I'm playing.

Oh yeah, I forgot that I sometimes do lazy boi practice with my Epiphone Jack Casady unplugged.  Easily heard over tinny laptop speakers for all the non-bass sounds.

Boss Waza air for bass. Simples!

That's the only upgrade I can see to what I use now.

NUX Mighty Plug plugged into whatever bass suits, headphones into Mighty Plug, phone (music) bluetooth'd to Mighty Plug if needed.

I’m guessing the shower is for washing away your sins after playing electric guitar? 😁

Most of the time I'll just grab a bass and play unplugged with my laptop. If I'm spoiling myself I'll go into a Zoom B1 Four and some headphones. If everyone is out then I'll plug into a Fender rumble 15w.

It’ll take more than water…

fire perhaps, or tar and feathers

It's the same as my big gig set up...

Whichever bass, into either Helix or Future Impact pedalboard (or occasionally neither of these and straight in) to DBX rack compressor, BBE pre-amp and 1500w Crown power amp into Markbass 2x10 and 4x10. And strangely, I only play loud if I'm playing with the band.

Currently using a Promethean 3110 a nice compact arrangement using the aux input fed by a tablet for track listening. Also used, like kodiakblair, a Hotone Nano but put it through a 4ohm Barefaced 210.

I’ve got my Orange Crush 100 in my bass corner, with my basses on a nearby stand for quick access. Nice set of cans for quiet practice. Tend to plug in my wireless and get going in a few moments.

I tend not to use my pedals for home practice - only for rehearsal and (obvs) gigs.

Having gone lightweight, the Trace rig has taken root so it's that or Waza Air and rotate basses. Noise isn't an issue in the sticks of North Yorkshire.

I plug my bass into a Tascam GB10 and listen through headphones.  The Tascam plays mp3 tracks that I can play along to.  I can change the key without altering the speed or change the speed without altering the key.  I can even loop sections of the songs if there are tricky bits to practise.  It's a great piece of kit.

1) Nux Mighty Plug into bass, headphones, and music played from Android phone via Bluetooth into Mighty Plug

2) Tascam GB-10 with Lekato wireless for input into headphones

3) DI box into mixer into hi-fi amp and thence headphones or speakers (if Sub Zero isn't working upstairs) - the PC also runs into the mixer

If I'm learning songs or playing late at night then I plug into my Focusrite interface and use a simple (EQ and compression) patch in Ableton. My wife has no problem with my playing, but I'm conscious of the fact that hearing someone playing through the middle eight of Kid Charlemagne over and over and over again is going to drive even the most tolerant person crazy.

I used to play through my big-boy rig at home as well, mostly because it's not very big (jumbo custom 1x10 ported cab and a MarkBass head), but I recently switched over to using my guitar amp most of the time because it is literally right next to my desk (I work from home, and that's also where my personal computer is, so that's where I spend about 70 percent of my time).

The guitar amp in question is a home-made 5w Fender Champ-style head running into an equally home made sealed 1x10 cab. I picked that kit from AmpMaker because it has just a gain knob and nothing else – my logic being that no tone stack means no tone stack to be voiced wrong for either guitar or bass. The can just has a celestion guitar speaker that's good down to about 80 Hz, but it sounds really really good as a slightly overdriven low-volume amp.
