Make no mistake this bass is absolutely magnificent. Bought very recently on a whim, I have to admit that fretless basses are not for me as the possibility of intonating correctly whilst trying to cope with recently diagnosed hearing damage which is unfortunately permanent, is highly unlikely. I believe the instrument was originally made in 1986 and was refinished completely by Jaydee not long ago as it was in bad shape cosmetically. It pretty much looks like a NOS instrument now with no visible marks except for a few light scuffs on the control plate. The bass plays very well with the typical fretless mwah that one would expect.It sits around the 9 pound mark so isn’t at all heavy and balances well on a decent strap. I have searched around and I can’t find many of these for sale, even if there were I doubt you would find anything so pristine. It comes with a Thomann hard case which is functional but since I have no packaging collection in person or a meet up is the best option should you want to adopt this lovely thing. I would prefer a straight sale, however a Wilcock Mullarkey, Serek Midwestern or a nice lightweight 5 string might be tempting. Thank you.8 points -
Lovely Sadowsky Metroexpress 5 string for sale. I got this in trade last year from Josh of this parish and as lovely as it is the project I thought id use it on hasn't materialised and I never get on with 5 strings. Josh's advert below which i hope he doesn't mind me sharing again. So, playing in a female-fronted Americana trio, I thought it would be nice to have a low D available to me to widen out the tonal palette. When our own @olihayhurst advertised one of these on this very forum I couldn’t resist. When we were an electric band I used to do the same trick with the d-tuner on my fretless Tony Franklin precision bass, so I knew what to expect but I have to say I am pleasantly surprised by the accuracy and stability of tuning as you from E to D to E again. The supplied Hipshot instructions made installation easy, including trimming back the silks on the E string to clear the bridge. First gig with it will be this Saturday afternoon and I am looking forward to unleashing the low D on the unsuspecting passing trade at Billy Bootleggers in Newcastle upon Tyne.5 points

I could write lots about this, but I did once wonder if I had too much gear when I was contemplating buying another bass amp. But I came to the realisation that as I don't tend to spend my money on anything else, I'm not in debt, and I enjoy it, then buy the amp 😁4 points

Following on with the theme of appalling Americanisms defiling the Queens English, I mentioned this way back on this thread and it warrants repeating... Tubes (pronounced toobz) when used by folk from this green and unpleasant land referring to valves. Yes, I know it's what those shouty, excitable cool kids from out in the colonies call them on YouToob. But you're not from Minnesota are you, you're from Halifax. So please stop it or I'll be obliged to give you a damn good fisting.4 points

Still need to get some Velcro on the Greathammer and get it locked down but extremely happy with this setup. I’ve added an fx loop between The Accountant and the Element in case I want to add anything else like the Model FeT for guitars etc. TBH it’s a bit overkill so might take that out as it adds a bunch of extra wires and clutter. Other than that I can see myself keeping this setup for the foreseeable as long as I can resist the QCmini 😬4 points

And anovver fing. That TV show, The Repair Shop. Why are they all so nice? They're definitely up to something. And why does everyone who goes on to get their tat fixed have to have a cry? Why won't they fix things for people whose parents are alive and healthy? Why do they insist the parents must be dead? "Can you fix my mums old egg whisk?" "Is she dead" "No, she's alright. I dropped her off at Ethels on my way here" "Im afraid we can't fix it if she's alive" "Thats a shame, I wanted it fixed" "Then the old bat has to go. Due to having damaged my knee before Xmas I haven`t returned to work after the holidays. So what have I been doing? Practicing the bass? Nah, I`ve been buying and selling bass guitars and related gear. My wife always says "if you can afford it just get it" so that`s what I have been doing. Like the op I seem to be addicted to buying and selling gear at the moment. Luckily I`m going back to work next week so hopefully I will calm down on buying. Still looking for a nice Thunderbird though...4 points

Forgive the poor scaling of the shots - I've directly pasted some random JPGs This was the thin fretted fretboard of one of @Owen's basses back in 2024. See how close the bottoms of the fret slots are to the bottom of the fretboard...that's not a lot of wood! The problem was a totally seized - and fully adjusted - trussrod With due warnings to Owen that it might well snap, I got out my trusty travel iron and sat it on the heel end for around 10 minutes, testing every now and again with a Stanley Knife blade: Once the glue was soft, I progressively moved the iron forward, sliding a steel sheet I use for bending acoustic guitar sides into and along the softened glue. Any thin steel can be used, a decorator's platter, a thin scraper - main thing is to slide horizonally...NEVER lift!! And you DON'T RUSH, and inch it along a few mm at a time: And eventually, it's off...and still in one piece. That is one well k*******d trussrod! :4 points

Great sounding, lovely playing and not too heavy 76 Jazz bass. It’s been in my possession for the last 23 years and I toured with it for 18 years hence a few battle scars which in no way affect its playability. It’s nicely lived in ! CTS pots date to 1976 and serial number bears this out. You will see in the photos that it has a mark on the maple board however this does not affect the way that it feels or plays. Its a good honest old bass that you’re welcome to come and try out anytime and it’s currently strung with LTFs.3 points -
To be more accurate, Musicman contracted CLF (yes, also a Leo Fender company) to manufacture the instruments - there ensued a dispute as Musicman rejected a lot of instruments, some of which were refinished by CLF before they were deemed acceptable - the final straw was the manufacture of a batch of Stingray necks incorrectly with inoperable truss rods. After that Musicman transferred the manufacture to Charvel, and the quality improved significantly. When Ernie Ball took over they improved some elements (for example pick up winding) to improve consistency of product and thus quality. However Pre EB basses are pretty consistent and certainly compared with comparable Fenders.3 points

Ill just run this up the flag pole so we can all take a top down view and see what actions drop out of it. People who use management speak are generally people with no interests outside of work (golf doesn't count). They're not blue sky thinking and onboarding all day and then going rock climbing, car racing, dogging or bass playing. They go home to their life partner who is exactly the same and spend all evening working. Weekends, they might go to a cafe to work, or just for a treat, go golfing with the head of global PR and talk about marketing strategies. They've never pretended to be a rock star in front of five disinterested people like we do.3 points

You may be watching the wrong programme. If you want your tat fixed, you have to go to Tattoo Fixers, where your 2cm x 4cm tattoo saying "BOB" (your ex-husband) will be transformed into a giant peacock covering your entire arm, or your rather unfunny tiny little picture of a man weeing somewhere a few centimetres north of your penis will be turned into a Cthulhu covering your entire torso. That is one programme where the punishment in no way fits the crime.3 points

I suffer a lot with depression. some of it is down to my life choices, so my bad, some of it is down to my illness and some the required medication. one of the things I do when I am down is buy music stuff. My credit card is in a constant state of being paid off. i don’t normally regret my purchases, and the stuff I have brings me imense happiness. I often say out loud I absolutely love music, probably more than I should and certainly more often than i say I love my wife!! anyone else indulge in retail therapy? I am currently looking at either an Atelier Z fretless or and Ibanez headless fretless to make the decision of not defretting my Yamaha seem like a better decision. i guess in a way i am addicted to gear, and justify it any way I can. i am lucky my wife just encourages me, if want it and u can afford it just buy it and stop talking about it is what she says. Hence my credit card never really going down.2 points

I have taken the brave decision to launch a new print and digital bass magazine for the UK market. I've been publishing magazines in my day job for 27 years and think it's terrible that we don't have a dedicated magazine anymore. We launch the mag officially at the Birmingham Bass & Guitar Show next month where we will have a small stand and giving away a sample issue (while stocks last) - we will then publish quarterly moving forward. I've not played a Stingray that was not well constructed the weak G syndrome however I have never experienced it I've got an 2EQ SUB USA Slab 5 , it went straight to the luthier - now it's magic , wasn't poorly made, just poorly looked after by the previous owner I'm well keen on an unlined Fretless 5 now however the numbers made will be scarce2 points

Playing a B string may give you the same notes as down-tuning, granted, but in no way whatsoever does it give you the groove, swagger or oikish malevolence that down-tuning until your strings rattle does; you're right, they just don't get it at all.2 points

That kind of distortion you are after is the power amp distortion, or at least, that of phase inverter. It's impossible to get such one with preamp. You might like to give Origin Effects BassRIG Super Vintage a try.2 points

There's a bit of 'it depends' involved here ref whether you are going to scorch the wood or not. A very thin cloth might be an idea (old-fashioned handkerchief thin) if you are concerned it might scorch - but not dampened, in my view. Dampened won't speed up or help warming the wood enough to soften the glue, it will dry pretty much immediately anyway and it could artificially expand the wood fibres which may affect the size or properties when it cools back down. As I say - it is the wood warming up sufficiently right through to the glue line that is the objective. If I had a fretboard that I was concerned about, I think I would simply use a lower temperature for longer. Patience really is the key here...2 points

After all the worry, it was great! Really cool venue, The Acoustic Lounge in Poynton. All the good things you want from a venue - easy to find, car park right next to load in doors, loads of plug sockets, great staff, first drink free and they have bands on every weekend so people know to come for live music. By no means full but with a decent crowd for a Sunday night and even some dancers. A very civilised 7pm start and 9.30pm finish meant I was in bed for just after 11 - bonus on a school night. Easily the best we've played - this was only our 4th full gig as a band and 2nd as a 5 piece with sax. Rig was Fender Jazz 5 Kazuki Arai --> (new) Xvive P58 wireless --> HX Stomp --> PA. Footwear was Vans classics. Lots of positive feedback from punters and venue, including a guy from another band who recorded pretty much the whole gig and sent us the 4k files. Brilliant stuff!
