Very tight space in the North Bay museum for a seven piece Christmas gig last Saturday night, BL looks unhappy but he booked the gig knowing where we would be set up. We were in an area where there is a big staircase in the room leading to the upstairs area where there were activities for kids so there was a constant stream of people passing us and some even stayed to listen for a while. We played some standards and quite a few Christmas pieces arranged for a small band and it went well, although in the jazz waltz arrangement of Oh Christmas Tree (terrible chart and too long) I was totally lost for about a third of the song while the tenor sax was soloing but I just kept the 3/4 pulse going and finally got back on track. Lots of vendors set up outside the building on a cool night (-4C) so folks came in to warm up and listen for a bit so we always had an audience. I used my Yamaha SLB200 straight into a small Roland amp that handled the keyboard too. Reasonable load in and out and a nice no pressure gig that also served as a rehearsal for a couple of gigs we have coming up before Christmas.10 points

Well, that's me half way home in one piece. Thanks to our wonderful organising committee for putting together an excellent bash. Great to put some faces to names, and I played some fun basses which made me smile, in particular the 12 string Hamer and the teeny tiny Harley Benton micro Jazz. If I'm not gigging - see you next year! Cheers Matt9 points

I tried to broadcast a Live Chat on the fly but the phone reception proved problematic (hence why the visuals look like an outtake from Minecraft!)...but you get the idea and vibe! https://youtube.com/live/ecqUO5LDXTQ?feature=share8 points

Many thanks to Paul and Paul for organising. It was a trip down memory lane for me as i used to teach in Wokingham and Nine Mile Ride was a regular part of my cycling route if I ever headed east from Reading. Really good to meet some new faces and I was pleasantly surprised as to how much difference new pickups would make. Apparently I'm a sixties fan, who knew?7 points

One more for the roll of honour: @police squad for providing the PA. It was really quite participatory this event, which is rather excellent on the part of all involved! Oh, and the things like tidying up, stacking the chairs, winding my mains extension leads back onto their reels didn't go unnoticed! 🙂6 points

If we're happy with the venue - it seemed to work well enough - I think we'd be more than happy to arrange one for next year. Obviously, there's going to be some minor logistical issues, but all in all if we just set out a handful of ground rules at the start and stick to timings, we should be good. Personally, thanks to Paul and Gary and to everyone that turned up!6 points

There's so much to say about yesterday's bash. Sorry, my phone died so I've got no photos of my own. A big thanks to @Mike Brooksfor hosting the talks with Matt from Monty's and also with Chris Childs. Really insightful and lots learned. FYI, the Monty's basses/pickups were played through a GK Legacy 800 with a more or less flat setting going into an LFSys Monaco. The first P bass (the Retro Wind) and the 4th (the green J) were absolutely stunning for me. One of the big insights for me from yesterday was the subtle differences between basses that are "the same". Andy's Hamer Chapparal B12L has some subtle differences to mine and feels a bit different on the strap. The big eye-openers came from comparing Spectors. Even Euro LX models from the same year have differences in neck carve, tuners, pickups and nut width, let alone all the cosmetic and wood choice differences. Phil's speaker comparison was insightful again. The acoustics of the venue made it a different experience to what it was in Taunton four weeks ago. It certainly made a mockery of a comment I heard recently where a chap who was looking at my LFSys Monaco said, "I wouldn't get on with that, I only like 10s".6 points

Owing to a hernia operation, followed shortly by a rotator cuff shoulder injury, we have had no gigs or rehearsals for a couple of months. Today was our first. Had to use a U Bass ad O can’t yet cover the whole fretboard on a standard bass but it went really well. Tightest we have been for a year or more 👍 After a period of illness, our rhythm guitarist earlier in the year we have carried in pretty much as before, just a bit tighter overall. With my latest medical layoff, our lead guitarist has been experimenting with his tone. It was sometime a bit weedy but yesterday it was huge, not just loud but really full. I can’t wait for the next gigs. Next up? Gig on the 22nd.6 points

Trace elliot twin valve 115 combo. What a beauty this is. Valve pre and 2 valve output rated at 115w. Its LOUD. It's ALL VALVE. It's amazing. The gp7 preamp sounds wonderful, and it has a few things over similar all valve heads.... The mid shift button really add some punch and depth in a good way. However the comprehensive eq means you really can dial in any sound you like. From deep deep dub to harmonically rich all valve sound. It also has a speaker out for adding an extension cab (if your crazy enough to use one). This is in amazing condition. It's around 35 years old at a guess. I've given it a thorough clean and it just looks fantastic. So, why this over any other? Well, it's a combo. A very well matched one. It's loud. It's trace watts, but trace valve watts it has room to add another cab. It's probably the same weight as just another valve head will weigh in at, and it fits in your car very easily. And the entire combo is cheaper than similar heads on their own. No doubt at all it's a collectors item too. Very few around, and even fewer in this condition. I've had the ashdown ctm300, the Laney nexus 400 and bugera svt and this is far better than those. Its guts me to put this up for sale, but I've also my gp12 410 combo up for sale so it's a case of what sells first. Nso if you do want it (and why wouldn't you) you'll need to be quick. Collectors item. Unbelievable sound. Good price. You'll not get many chances to get one of these. Pick up Leyland Lancashire5 points

I nearly forgot to mention @Phil Starr bass cab shootout / blind test Not only was it interesting but quite jaw dropping actually Who knew a 1x8 could sound so full, so much so it's my next project to do Nice one Phil5 points

Yes - a big thanks to @Mike Brooks: hosting those talks was a big contribution to the success of the day.5 points

BTW I demo'd six cabs at the SE Bass Bash yesterday all running off PA amps set flat and adjusted so the levels were the same. The 1x8 was a clear winner repeating the performance at the SW Bass Bash.5 points

The closest would be the 6150 (0.105 x 0.042) or the 6200. They are rather wide, and not that high. You can always take a vernius and ballpark the original frets in terms of size, and work from there. Anyway: here's mine. A 1966 P-bass that has been carefully played by the first owner (I'm the 2nd). Not babied, but you notice it came from someone who took care of it. 5MAY66C, pots from week 23 1966 (2nd week of June), and greybobbins from the 19th of September of that year. It's not the best sounding or playing P-bass that had the misfortune of being the subject of my grubby hands. It's very distinctly indistinct, as it's one of the thousands that were spewed out of Fullerton that year. It's not a bad instrument at all, but it's nothing mythical. I dare to argue my American Original '60 is, objectively spoken, the better instrument. The '66 has a thinner neck, which feels a bit more relaxed. But apart from that: It does exactly what you would expect from a P. Then why?!? Because I could. (and because it doesn't have a deadspot on the C#).4 points

I have this stunning Maruszczyk, which has always looked amazing but now plays amazing thanks to @Manton Customs 🙂4 points

It depends on what kind of finish you have on your bass. I've found nitro cellulose can be fairly reactive with even the EVA foam rubber in guitar stands! If your bass is finished in poly eurathane (aka poly) then it should be relatively safe. I would suggest using carpet tape because it contains a textile weave which allows it to be pulled off in one piece. Luthiers use it all the time for sticking down routing templates.4 points

We have a gig to support one of our favourite charities, Matthews House (a drop in centre/cafe/advice hub for homeless people) on Friday. Last night's rehearsal was a chance to go through some old favorites and pick out the best for a short set following our performance with the charity's choir. It was quite a relaxed affair and I think we've settled on the core songs, with a few extras should the need arise. The event is to start a '24hr sleep out' raising money for the charity and it's being held in the Swansea.com stadium so technically, my 'How was tour gig last night' post will be for our stadium gig. I somehow doubt it will be a 21,000 seat sell out, though. 😀 As it's an outdoor event and the weather forecast is for rain and cold weather, I've been practicing with thin liner gloves just in case.4 points

Had our first rehearsal as a 6 piece... Though 2 pieces were missing - drummer due to bad back and singer as we thought we should perhaps do some arranging of guitar and bass parts before a full rehearsal. We had drum parts from our album recording going through the PA, along with vox if we needed them (I quite like to do it without so everyone knows and counts the structure - I've found it gets into your head better if you don't just rely on a singer's cue, this helps if there's poor monitoring I find). And we got new and sort of different arrangements for 5 songs - with chuggy rhythm guitar I've got room to explore some new pastures up at the widdly end, which is nice (some may disagree!), and lead guitar now has the space to do occasional crazy stuff. So all in all, quite promising! We'll see whether singer and drummer agree next week.4 points

Thanks to @NancyJohnson and @prowla for all their efforts and organisational skills. Basschat is good, but it's better to meet up with bass players. I got a few ideas for the future. Thanks guys.4 points

Hi, I'm looking at doing the third annual NW and Scotland Bass Bash and Petting Zoo for 2026. This would be at the Clapham village hall in Clapham https://claphamcumnewbyvillagehall.org.uk/ We are on the NW tip of North Yorkshire, 20 mins from the M6. Parking is easy and we would have the whole hall again. Currently the following days are available, so I'm trying to work out which ones to do. I've moved this forward to avoid clashes with the Midlands Bass Bash Saturday April 4th 2026 Sunday April 5th 2026 Sunday April 18th 2026 Sunday April 19th 2026 Saturday April 25th 2026 Sunday April 26th 2026 Saturday May 9th 2026 Sunday May 10th 2026 Sunday May 17th 2026 If I can workout a poll, I'll do this to make it easier. Ongoing neck and back issues forced me to sell both my basses over 8 pounds, leaving me with these two lovelies. A very mojo'd 1978 Shergold Marathon and a CIJ Mustang bass (recently acquired from @Lozz196 and with added black/cream/black scratchplate for a more punk/rock look than the brown tort). Both super light, both ready to gig. Just need to find a band!!!3 points

Dear Rob, I have no idea regards fret-wire, but am happy to offer my services to find out for you. If you care to post your bass to PO Box 666, Chelmsford, I will personally take it around the world until I find a match. I estimate that this should take us well into the 2030s, but I am sure you will be more than pleased with the result. Snorkie635 Just outside your back door, checking the locks work. We managed to earn enough off Spotify plays in one year to take the whole band out for a pizza, that, for me was as close to making it as I am ever going to get 😂3 points

Just got a Zoom MS-70CDR, old model, in the door, that I bought used, but it is in mint condition and works perfectly, cause the one I had sucked tone. I use it as kind of super 8 band fully parametric EQ, kind of a budget Source Audio EQ2, as EQ based cab sim, which I found I prefer to IR based cab sims (and yes, I realize I am missing out on the real dynamic frequency response of a real cab, that IR based cab sims are capable of, but it sounds great). Here are my settings for a faux bass cab sim, in case anyone is interested (using 4 of the 2 band "Bass Para EQ" model in series): Freq: 20Hz - Q: 2 - dB: - 20 Freq: 70Hz - Q: 4 - dB: + 4 Freq: 1kHz - Q: 4 - dB: + 3 Freq: 1.2kHz - Q: 4 - dB: +1 Freq: 3.6kHz - Q: 2 - dB: +6 Freq: 12kHz - Q: 1 - dB: - 12 Freq: 16kHz - Q: 1 - dB: - 20 Freq: 20kHz - Q: 0.5 - dB: - 20 I should probably add that this is followed by a HPF with -3dB cut off point set at 40Hz (something this pedal do not feature, though one could use the "AC Bass Pre" model on the Zoom for this function only, and just set it flat otherwise, I believe the "Depth" parameter of this model set to a value of "9" essentially is a 40Hz HPF). And this is the pedal, in case you are not familiar with it (just a random Google photo of it, not my specific unit):3 points

If anyone wants to build the 8" design it is here. It works as it is but we are tweeking the design by a couple of mm to make panel cutting a bit easier. the designs should be tweaked in the next few days. Heaven knows how BassChat chose a pic of a different cab to show3 points

Thanks to all who organised such a great day, and for everyone who brought along such a wide range of gear. It really was a lot of fun and great to meet so many of you. Really enjoyed the talk with Matt from Montys ... still trying to figure out which P pickup I should buy since they both sounded excellent. Also loved the fact that we had a hall full of us listening to bass loops through different cabs. That was an eye opener given my favourite was an 8".3 points

Big thanks to all for coming and making this year another great success. Always good to put faces to names/usernames! The venue worked, I think,..... especially considering how spoilt we'd been in the past with access to lots of rooms and a hall in a school! Thank you's from me to Paul @NancyJohnson and Paul @prowla in particular for doing a lot of the advance legwork and prep as I was unavailable. Also, of course to our guest speakers re: cab shooutout and pickups.... and to my old schoolmate @Mike Brooks and good friend Chris Childs for their insights and contributions. I think @stevie may have secured (or is about to!) a few orders as well so a great day all around!3 points

ACS seconded. I use the PRO17s, as they give the most neutral sound. It’s pretty much like turning the volume of the whole (very loud) band to a manageable level, no specific frequency bias.3 points

Wow, I got up this morning ready to go to the cenotaph and then deal with a lot of hassle that’s arisen in the past few days. I opened this thread and now I’m blushing! Thank you very much all for the incredibly kind comments – the feelings are entirely mutual. I’ve met some of the most lovely, humane, and humble people I know through Basschat. Thank you! Onto the Suhr, i’m absolutely delighted that this has returned to where it belongs! It’s an absolutely gorgeous instrument. It really needed a good set up when I played it, though I was massively impressed by the fit and finish. What a lovely close to a long story!3 points
