  1. I'm downsizing my collection a bit, so up for grabs is my incredible Über Spec Finn 5 string by AC Guitars. This is the highest spec that ACG offer, with the most premium woods, the multicoil pickups and the full fat DFM filter preamp, with a passive tone knob. As with all my basses, this is 31.5" scale, which makes playing absolutely effortless, and due to the sound design and construction, there are literally nothing but benefits to the shorter scale. Here's the details... Spec Level: Über 31.5" scale Bolt-on construction 24 frets 18mm string spacing 45mm nut width Katalox Top Cuban Mahogany Body Black Accent Veneer 5 piece Red Oak/Wenge Neck, with slim asymmetric carve Highly figured Pau Ferro Fingerboard with Sapwood, wit 0º radius, i.e. flat ACG MC pickups, Multicoils, handmade by Aaron Armstrong ACG DFM filter preamp with passive tone control and active/passive switching ACG/Hipshot Custom Bridge Gotoh Resolute Tuners Currently strung with fairly heavy Nickel D'Addario XLs, but it really shines with lighter gauge Newtone Nickels, something like 40 60 80 125TW, I might have a set kicking around to pop on. I don't know the exact weight, as I don't have proper means to measure it properly, but I'd say it's a medium weight bass, maybe 8.5 lbs or thereabouts? Certainly doesn't feel heavy. This really is an incredible instrument, but I'm ultimately more of a 6 string bassist first, then 4 strings, then 5 - I know, weird. A bass built to this spec today would cost the best part of £4000, and worth every single penny. This Finn is absolutely mint, not a mark on it, never been gigged, barely even left the house. Looking for roughly £2000, ono, with a TGI Extreme Gigbag. More than happy to courier within the UK, with insurance, at buyer's cost, I'd guess this would be about £30 based on previous experience. No trades thank you, sale only. Cheers, Eude More pics...

  3. Howdy. Not quitting bass, but have just announced to the band that the next gig in September will be my last with them. There’s a lot more behind me knocking it on the head than just being fed up… I just don’t think, after 2 years that I want to be in a band with them anymore. We’ve been recording an album and It’s taken an age and the bickering and differences of opinion are taking their toll. I choose to do this, I’m not earning from it and it’s starting to feel like I should choose to not do it anymore…anyhow. The gear I own is solely down to “need” for the band. So I’m not overly attached to much of it. I’m going to set up sales threads for each part, probably 20 pedals and about 10 basses. I’m starting a project with a fellow basschatter and will just share music online - no plans to gig after September. Doing that “falling out of love with music” thing I seem to do every 4/5 years. Keep your eyes peeled x

  4. A couple of changes to my home/desk practice setup: Dedicated tuner allows me 5x separate effects readily available on the HX Stomp. The Element then acts as my Bluetooth/Headphone interface for practicing and learning tunes, as well as a DI/Cab sim for FOH if I gigged it. Can’t reach the amp out from the Element in this layout (because it’s located in a silly place), but I can just take the amp out from the HX Stomp anyway, so I’m sorted. 6. Picked this up from Bass Bros end of last week, I did trade in the G&L Trib M-2000 and a few pedals towards it, but will be paying my dear old Dad back the rest. 1992 4001V63, in great condition for its age, I was a bit concerned about the small amount of tail lift but it doesn't cause any issues playing wise. Wanted a Rick for a long long time they have such a distinctive sound and look so cool! This one plays lovely, the neck is nice and slim. Only pic I have so far:

  10. It's been a big week or so for pedals here. Damnation Audio's Big to be more precise. Made in conjunction with Pet Symmetry, it's modelled after the Sanford & Sonny Bluebeard (a brilliant fuzz) and a boost pedal. Like everything of Damnation Audio's I've tried (MBD2, MBD3, Dirtfixer, Spite Box) it works rather well and actually makes me excited to play with a pick. Big-foot-esque blurry photo below.

  15. After a year of gigging it, I still hadn't fallen for the vintera II '50s p bass I'd gotten, so I traded it in and got this Player II - Absolutely delighted with it, ergonomically the neck just works better for me, and the pickups are superb. Put the obligatory leopard print strap on it and the rest of this year has been going great. Might even sell on something else and pick up another one in green 💚

  16. Much loved sandberg California tm5. Original Sandberg soft case included. Plays perfectly, set up with sandberg round wounds including a tapered B string. I believe they are the 45 gauge set, just the right amount of tension in the B. Finish is not pristine, but this is the aged model so it’s not supposed to be really. There is a nice patina on the metalwork and some tasteful markings on the body. There’s certainly nothing that’s not in keeping with that character. There is dink in the neck and headstock that I don’t think came from the workshop however, and the pocket zip on the case doesn’t work anymore These are really great instruments and I would consider swapping for a vm4. I just don’t want to deal with 5 strings anymore. Price is £1200, looking for a quick sale IMG_0112.mov

  17. D!ckheads, idiots, narcissists, tw*ts, I've played with them all, and it can become very tiresome, but I've been gigging solidly via word of mouth for the last 20 years. You can't do that sitting at home, so I've learnt to live with the 10% of people I don't like in order to do the things I do like with the other 90%.

  19. ***PRICE DROP NOW £1300*** 2010 US Stingray, 2EQ, CAR with rosewood board. One of the limited edition 133 basses, full fat ‘ray but with a soft gig bag case instead of a hard shell job. This is in excellent condition with one very minor ding on the top edge, and the pickguard is quite marked but obviously easily replaceable. Comes with a Hipshot D-tuner (long key though instead of short… doh), if you want the original tuner key I’ll chuck it in. I’ve also replaced the pickup with a Nordstrand MM4.2, which sounds flippin’ great. She’s quite heavy (10lb) but with a decent wide strap it feels ok. ***EDIT*** now comes with the option of a Warwick Rockbass semi-rigid case - photos added. Loathe to post this but can at buyer’s (insured) expense, or can meet in person at either Portsmouth, Southsea, Southampton or Lymington (I’m on the I.O.W.)

  22. Whoops I did it again! Another attempt at persuading myself that I needed and could play a 5 string! Another 4 string incoming means that this must be sacrificed. Played a few times at home and 2 or 3 rehearsals, where my lack of 5 string ability was somewhat embarrassing! It really is as new (I bought it from Peach about a year ago) , there's not a mark on it and comes complete with the gig bag and tools. Nice and lightweight and all working as it should. Strung recently with a set of light gauge Newtones Specs are here Prefer collection but happy to travel within an hour for a meetup - Essex, Suffolk, London, Herts etc. Would reluctantly post at your expense and insurance.

  29. Sledgehammer is about the only one I regularly play in my band that has a prominent fretless bass line. But it sounds fine on fretted - no complaints so far! PS, I used to love playing "Wherever I lay my hat..." and "Tears in Heaven" at home when the mood took me. Beautiful lines.

  30. I got this MIJ Fender Jazz brand new in 1992, when I was 17. I played it exclusively for 3-4 years, and after that at least 50% of the time. After a few years I mostly played 8-string bass in a metal band, and it got used less and less. I pick it up sporadically these days, it's a good bass but I can't seem to get the sound I want out of it anymore. I've been thinking of selling it and getting another fretless.

  35. I put up with it for a long time in the 80's. Then one day, on the counter of a music shop in Leeds city centre, there was a sweet jar with hand written label "strap locks". It was full of these curious looking things. Have been using the same pair ever since. I recently took them apart and cleaned them for the first time as they were getting stiff. They must be 40 years old. How wonderful.

  37. After picking up the excellent MB102Energy cab from a fellow basschatter my LM4 arrived from Thomann ( considerably lower in price to U.K. stores ) Sat it on top of cab and played my PBass through it 1: Wow this is a loud amp considering I’m going into a single 8ohm cab 2: Quiet ( I’ve read noisy fan complaints but this 2025 model is very quiet. 3: EQ is excellent and the 4 band works very well. 4: Mute Function 5: Selector for flat or scooped EQ works well, footswitchable too 6: Old School control rolls off the top end and makes it sound more like an old Ashdown amp warm and slightly woolly ! 7: Light ( preferred the LM4 as it’s a metal case, 58R is plastic ) 8: Sound is very good, clear punchy and makes a good match with a PBass Very pleased with this rig and not out of place at home or jam sessions, rehearsals and gigs I used a rubber mat under the amp ( light heads I normally do ) and stops feet indentation marks in the fur covering !

  38. The Digbeth range has been around for a few years now and included a combo and a couple of heads, all with a ‘tube’ emulation pre-amp alongside a Class D power section. However, they announced a couple of days a new subrange called Digbeth ‘Foundry’, kind of based on the mantra from their recent Lionheart Foundry guitar amps. In short, they set out to make inexpensive solid-state amps that do what they say on the tin without any bells and whistles or relying on valves. As such, the ‘tube’ channel of the normal Digbeth models (which will remain in production) is renamed/replaced on foundry models with a footswitchable solidstate ‘drive’ channel instead. The control section is also simplified for a modern user (addition of a master volume too) to make it more accessible. The new Foundry products: -30w 8” Combo: £169 -50w 10” Combo: £249 -100w 12” Combo: £339 -200w 15” Combo: £449 -200w Head: £299 An intriguing range of additions! https://www.laney.co.uk/amps/bass/digbeth/dbf200h Photo of the new Foundry DBF200H: Photo of the existing DB200H for comparison: I dig the idea, their sound, and the control layout, so have just pulled the trigger on the head after teetering between a few options from other companies. This foundry line seems to hit the spot just right!

  40. Interesting last night with the Fortunate Sons. It was in a very large rehearsal room so we could try out a new PA system. Each of us gets a little 12-way mixer so we can set our own mix for either an onstage monitor or an EIM (Only the keyboard player and vocalist have gone down this route). Guitarist tried being ampless, but wasn't happy with it. I'm, OK to go ampless but only for venues where space is at a premium... bear in mind a 12" monitor takes up as much floor space as my 2x12 vertical cab but doesn't support the PA. They were happy with my backing vocals but want me to be louder as sometimes I wasn't triggering the noise gate. As for my playing, I have most of the songs nailed but there are a couple I know I can do better.

  41. The message types with names are just that and that’s how they appear in any MIDI controller (such as Morningstar). Program Change is just PC. Note-on/off are the messages sent when pressing and releasing a keyboard key; velocity is a value associated with that which is derived from how fast you press the key. These are messages you can also assign to button presses on a controller. Say if you want a Morningstar button to play a drone.

  45. Well, we're all different of course but I don't get any reaction or finger burn from the DRs. As I said originally there was a slight friction for the first hour or two but then nothing. Speaking purely about smoothness/string noise, IMO Elixirs are the smoother/less noisy of the two, althoigh the DRs are smoother than their uncoated strings. However, also IMO I don't like the Elixir higher tension and lack of zing/chime compared to the dragon skin plus. All personal preference and I'd say both are good options depending on which details you prefer.

  46. In that case, simplify. There's no shame in playing at your best (not theirs, or the original bassist's...). Most songs can be simplified, keeping much of the 'spirit' of it all. The audience will fill in any other auditory information from their own knowledge of the song, and if they don't know it well, what does it matter..? Don't flail yourself skinless over a piece that's above your pay-grade. Play it as best you can (and practice more in the years to come, obviously...). Your ears will develop faster if you use 'em more, too, so keep working stuff out the 'old school' way.
