A more left field choice would be the genuinely unique Advantage album by Clock DVA, early industrial electronics meets jazz and funk in a sublime mix that wasn't to be repeated as the line up imploded on the subsequent tour. timmo Posted January 24, 2016 Share Posted January 24, 2016 As a fan of The Jam, I got a bit lost in the 80`s as I hated stuff like Simply Red and Frankie Goes to Hollywood etc. The Wonderstuff - Eight Legged Groove Machine changed my direction as far as music was concerned. But from the perspective of what made an impact on me at the time, and had a huge influence on me as a musician & songwriter, I'd say The Crossing by Big Country. Released in 1983 - the height of fashionista synth-pop & insipid white boy pop-funk, it was a tour de force of loud guitars used in unconventional ways, huge, emotive songs and impeccable, structured musicianship.
