1.
Sh*t With Resistors or in my case.... Speakers Want Replacing. Not as bad as Horrible American Rubbish That Keeps Exploding.....again, by experience!
The SM amps were classic and the Goliaths were great cabs. The PAS chassis were decent for the time but when you go for a supposed custom spec, and the recone units becomes scarce you've basically condemned the cab to a set of new chassis'....which for a 410, is expensive. In the U.S, recone kits were supposed to be available, so that would sustain the cabs, but in Europe that was impossible, and een SWR couldn't help. I never found a chassis fit to replace anyway..altho plenty of people said the Eminience 2510 was good, but I didn't like it. The weight save was nice..the sound wasn't, IMO. I think a few people could suggest a decent enough match through WinSD tools but you still need to factor in how many units do you replace? Other than that...they had the really good period and then others took over. In the late 80's/early 90's they were the benchmark along with Eden.
 2.
This should be good...
my thoughts exactly
 3. Getting positive and unsolicited comments from musicians in the audience is definitely a nice thing. You'll have to know what you are doing for that so the credit is down to you. Well done.
 4. For me, I'd get the idea out of your head that the Fender Jazz 5 is the benchmark.. All the best Jazzes I've played have been clones of the Fender which is why there is such a market. People 'need' a Fender, but they don't want one made by Fender.. IMO.
 5. Playing with a drummer... go with the lead. Whoever has it, the other plays a complimentary pattern... Lock in usually means you play his parts... but if he gets flowery, maybe you shouldn't and stick with the basic pattern...and if you are all overt the place, he shouldn't be. You and the drums are the foundation...every else is a degree of dressing. In the pocket.. that'll be a whole can of worms..
 6. The actual playing can have power and energy even if you aren't flying around like loons. I'm not sure you can sound great without something coming across, tbh...so you need that 'connect'. How you 'force' the singer to be a frontman is a skill not so many have as well. I'm not sure how contrived you can actually be...if you don't have it, you don't have it. Flat is flat, IME.
 7.
Having spent many an hour working in a dedicated bass retail environment I can confidently say that less than 10% of our customers had ever heard of, or spent any significant time on, BC. Simply didn't register with most of the people we came in contact with.
I'd expect this too and a quick head count of bass players I know, I wouldn't argue with the 10% figure.
 8.
tbf some guitar amps do need to cranked up to hit the sweet spot. But if that's the case maybe a power brake could be used at rehearsals?
I'd question that need myself as I'm sure they'd have the issue elsewhere and on gigs so he should provision for it. As for rehearsals, I'd top and tail the song and would say this isn't the sound I'll use so the band should still be able to work with the track without silly volumes. It is acceptable to use another sound as the key is getting the work done in a band context. The sound isn't that important at this point, IMO.
 9.
Very high volume in small rehearsal rooms is pointless, damaging everyone's hearing, achieves little and is very amateurish, even immature. Hearing protection is essential. Whether you carry on with this is up to you, but I wouldn't be playing with these guys.
I'd agree... but you shouldn't continue with this even with plugs in... I can't see what you hope to achieve if you can't hear anything.
 10. Looks pretty funky to me....
 11. Good going on both counts... .48 years of gigs and only 2 knock backs. Sorry you lost money tho, nonetheless
 12. No..... not impressed unless they have upgraded the woeful pre amp and bridge...at the very least. I'd have to swap both out if they are same as the old ones.... but then why would you buy a new bass and have to do that.
 13. No problem with that. He thinks January is a bit dodgy. He may well also be letting you down gently, His gig, his call and he has concerns about the neighbours..??
 14.
Bots are automated spam accounts and JTUK is a rarely spotted bass legend with an all-star band and an extensive rider of specific technical requirements for his gigs.
Let me correct you... it wasn't my rider, it was a international jazz act who insisted on that spec. The venue, which had a very decent Meyer in-house system, didn't have the 9 wedges of the standard required.
 15.
Blue. Dont be so literal, its a generalisation, but also true. Most of the pro musicians got into it originally cos they loved music, and lots of them made money at it cos they were in the right place at the right time. I envy them. If I have to spell it out........, what it means is that aiming to have a lifelong, paying career, as a musician is one of the long shots in life. Wanting to play music and simply enjoying it for its own worth it is a goal that can be attained by most with some work.
Was thinking about this just this evening on the drive home. Two of my 'friends' must have played to a million people this year...not sure I envy them. Having said that, if they clear the money they expect to clear, I might change my mind.. I'm not quite out of love with music- I play every day- but can't be far off..???
And I'm sure you all must have seen this fella ......................................
Now I see what you gravitate too but as far as funky goes? No, imo.
 17.
If only I could sing. I'd lose half my current band in an instant and go out as a three piece. £210.00 for a pub would earn me more than a share of £250.00 between 5. Because there are 5 of us we are restricted to a min of £250.00. Pubs love it when someone rocks up with a mic and backing tapes but only wants £150.00. I've had the pleasure of being in bands that demand more and get it due to good fan base and in some of the pubs my current band I play in, we can get as much as £400.00 due to right location, right music, right crowd ect but this is not the norm. I saw a band in my local boozer few weeks ago that played all the remedial pub rock/indie stuff. Personally bored me shitless but ....pub payed £200.00 = pub happy. Punters of about 25-30 in numbers got pissed and joined in= happy punters. Band had happy crowd plus a few quid each. Not pro minded musos but just chaps with guitars having a laugh = happy band. I can see it now...."hello pub landlord, what you need is half the punters, pay more and try out my pro standard function band that no one round here knows from Adam and see how it goes..." You only have 2 other people to contend with so if you are happy with the results musically speaking....its not too bad.
Depends on the place.... function bands may well not cross-over too well anyway.... but no one is going to be convinced that less people will work in this context. You can try and sell the really accomplished band but there are limits to the market..ie, how much alcohol sells, and it may be better to stick with the units sold. By the same token, if you warned the pub of a good attendence and to stock up on wine... and they ran out after selling 70 bottles of wine, you aren't going to be going out for £250.
 18.
But some of us can be and I'm one of them!
Don't be a stalker, It gets a bit boring, not to say pretty sad...but there you go..!! Besides, have you heard some of their bands...
 19.
I'm very much like that too if I can I like to commumicate my appreciation for their performance and if they ask what I thought about the sound I do think it's best to be honest to what you hear because I know myself that I would want to know how my bass sounded in the venue.
I'm often/invaribly asked what I think of the sound at gigs. In some ways it is a compliment that they ask, but by the same token I don't really want to spend too long talking about things like that...and it is better to move about a bit a talk to other people. Sometimes the breaks aren't long enough..
 20. Let me just say that not all of you can be me... I'm sorry but thanks for the sentiment. As for gigs, I tend to know a lot quite a few of the musicians and I'm sure hardly any of the bass players would be BC-ers Out of the very few BC-ers bass players that I might meet, they don't have much good to say ...which is probably why they don't post much.
 21.
I'll give that a try, thanks. I'd kinda been working on the premise that it's the characteristic of the mids that I was looking to hear so was actually pushing the mids - of course it could also well be the specific frequencies the mid control boosts aren't the frequencies I want and could therefore actually be overpowering them instead? Much appreciated!
Likely to sound brutal with a P... as they aren't the most forgiving in that regard. Outside the sweet spot, they can be hard to tame. I'd soften the low mids until you get a nice helpful hole in the sound... scooped, I think we call it..
 22. Not sure I'd ever do that.... but the squeeling noise doesn't sound like the woofer itself..?? normally too much signal goes right to the cone and its movement.
 23. I'll approach it as playing in the style of... that means I've listen to that person and I've aped the kind of thing he does, but I'm not interested of ripping licks right down pat.. Andy Fraser, for example, would be easy to give a nod too, so just listen to his phrasing... and maybe have the middy staccatto thing going on a little..
 24.
Sorry but putting your foot on the monitor (even Mr Harris) is lame. Anyone playing a great bass line or riff in the last 60 years has probably nicked it themselves. If you have any personality as a player you'll make what you play sound like you, so it won't matter where it came from. Me? If I can fit it in I'll use it.
Yep...... although I very much doubt 99.9% will know where I've lifted it from anyway.. including bass players. I just wouldn't be so obvious ..
