My mainstream choices would be: Duran Duran - Rio Simple Minds - New Gold Dream Both had the combination of great musicianship, quality production, top tunes and real subtlety which rewards repeated listening. My more obscure choices would be: The Ward Brothers - Madness Of It All Fiction Factory - Throw The Wharped Wheel Out Both have the same qualities as my mainstream choices but just happened to sell somewhat less. A Walk Across the Rooftops - The Blue Nile Bummed - Happy Mondays New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) - Simple Minds And if it were open to all artists (i.e. not just UK) it'd be Sign o' the Times by Prince.. I'd have gone with First and Last and Always The Nephilim, definitely! Any Maiden album of the 80s really. The first 2 Wonder Stuff albums and most of Pop Will Eat Itself's album. Perhaps not the most socially or musically 'correct' album BUT it worked for me then and it still does today. I saw FGTH at the Birmingham Odeon on their first tour and despite being one of the oldest in the audience - I loved it and yes I was singing along and dancing. darkandrew Posted January 25, 2016 Share Posted January 25, 2016 (edited) All of those that have voted for Tears for Fears' Songs from the Big Chair might want to check out Steven Wilson's remix of the album. It's been completely rebuilt from the original analogue master tapes, all the 80s reverb fog removed and replaced with a more subtle use of modern reverb, and all the mastering compression removed and replaced by a flat transfer. It sounds amazing and you can actually hear all the different parts; Mothers Talk is an absolute revelation.
