Maurice Chevalier - Thank heaven for little girls
Sam Cooke - only 16

Were they both paedophiles???
Don't forget that at the same period in time Jerry Lee Lewis came to the UK with his new bride, Myra Gale Brown a cousin of his once removed. She was 13. We can only assume marriage at that age is/was legal in some states?

I'm the exact opposite. I'm much more interested in the lyrics than the bass line (unless it is something with meaningless lyrics such as most RHCP songs.) This is possibly why Billy Bragg is my all-time favourite performer.
And possibly why he's just about my least favourite, along with Rod Stewart, Dire Straights, the Doors .........

Apparently the Captain Pugwash thing is largely urban myth. It is said that there is a character Master Mate which, if could be misheard as Master Bate if you want to hear it thus. Roger the Cabin Boy and Seaman Stains are apparently total fabrication.
I can confirm that that is urban myth. There was no master Bates, it was Tom the cabin boy and there was no seaman Stains. I know cos I used to love it!

Gary Pucket Young Girl, doesn't even try and disguise what it's about, still played regularly on oldies radio

Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl
With all the charms of a woman
You've kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe
You're old enough
To give me Love
And now it hurts to know the truth
Whaoo-oh-oh
Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl
Beneath your perfume and make-up
You're just a baby in disguise
And though you know
That it's wrong to be
Alone with me
That come on look is in your eyes
Whaoo-oh-oh
Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl
So hurry home to your Mama
I'm sure she wonders where you are
Get out of here
Before I have the time
To change my mind
'Cause I'm afraid we'll go too far
Whaoo-oh-oh
Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl
Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

Bryan Adams' 'Summer of '69' -- the last line of vocal before the outro guitar bit is "me and my baby in a 69". All the lyrics sites will tell you it's "...in '69", but the 'a' is definitely there.
Well what do you expect from a song that starts

Had my first real sex dream
I was five at the time...

Couple of fellas I used to work out with used to sing this at the end of our workout...had me a bit worried TBH:

"Turn Off The Lights"

Turn off the lights and light a candle
Tonight I'm in a romantic mood, yeah

Let's take a shower, shower together
I'll wash your body and you'll wash mine, yeah
Rub me down in some hot oils, baby, yeah
And I'll do the same thing to you

Just turn off the lights, come to me
Girl, I wanna give you a special treat, you're so sweet
Turn off the lights and let's get cozy
See, you're the only one in the world that I need

I wanna love you, love you all over, yeah
Over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again
Whisper sweet words of love in your ear
Show you how much I missed you, missed you, my dear

Turn 'em off and come to me
Tonight, I'm in a sexy mood, baby and light a candle
Girl, there's something that I, I wanna do to you
I wanna do, I wanna do to you, baby

Would you mind if I asked you to
Would you rub me down
Would you rub me down in some, in some burnin' hot oils, baby, yeah
I swear, I can do the same thing, the same thing to you, baby

Turn 'em off and let's get cozy
I wanna give you a special treat, you've been so sweet
Turn 'em off and come closer
You're the only one in this whole wide world that I'd ever need

Turn 'em off and light a candle
You see, there's somethin' I, somethin' I, somethin' I, somethin' I
Somethin' I wanna do to you, baby

I'm lyin' here waitin', my dear
You can get what you want any time you want it
I'm lyin' here waitin', my dear
Come get what you need, give me what I need

Tell me what you wanna do
(There's somethin' I)
Tell me what you wanna do, babe
(There's somethin' I, somethin' I wanna do to you, baby)
Tell me what you wanna do
(Yeah)
Tell me what you wanna do, babe
(Yes)

Tell me what you wanna do
(I've got somethin' in my mind)
Tell me what you wanna do, babe
(Somethin' that I've been wantin' to do all the time, yeah, yes)
Tell me what you wanna do
(I wanna give you a special treat)
Tell me what you wanna do, babe
('Cause you've been so sweet, yeah, yes)

(Anything that you want, anything that you need, I got it, I got it)
Tell me what you wanna do
(I can do it)
Tell me what you wanna do, babe
(I'm willin')
Tell me what you wanna do
Tell me what you wanna do, babe
(I'm willin' to try)
you could be right, though I got the impression they'd done the deed then he found out, anyway it's a very dodgy subject, "sorry your honour she told me she was 16" doesn't really cut it does it?

Yeah I seem to remember the latter two characters were made up by a stand up comedian, though I forget who exactly.

Pictures of Lilly.
Indeed.

Here is a lesser known track by Stretch (of 'Why Did You Do It' fame) that was rather tongue in cheek called 'Navy Blues', complete with heavy breathing double vocal track. Absolutely sumptuous sounding bass on this :)

Dunno to be honest. How many 18 or 19 year olds ask girls they meet and take home from pubs for ID ? I know I didnt used to.
But once, when I was that age, I did see a girl I'd met in a pub a few nights before standing at a bus stop in a school uniform.

an awful lot of popular music is, was, and alway has been, quite unambiguously about shagging?
Nonsense. Consider the song I Want Your Sex, in which George is very clearly filling in a form on behalf an acquaintance and needs to know what to put in the "gender" box.

What a bizarre thread! Are we really all stunned and reeling at the shock revelation that an awful lot of popular music is, was, and alway has been, quite unambiguously about shagging?

You guys...

Jon.
That much I'm quite comfortable with; It's when the subject is underage or unwilling that I start to feel uneasy. I wouldn't go so far as banning any of the songs mentioned, but it's worth acknowledging that the lyrics may be a bit questionable by modern standards.

There are some songs that, if you listen to the lyrics, really shouldn't be played pre-watershed.

A good example is Unbelievable by EMF - saying F***
Yellow Mellow by Donovan - widely considered to be advocating underage sex.

Any others?
Well as I knew the guy I can tell you yellow mellow was a substance (and could also be chics or?) But yeh I get uncumfortable with some lyrics when with my kids, even though they are now adults. And why the hell do we know not bother when their are so many F's N's and I hear a C in one song as despite my age my bassist ears are real sensitive! How we fall so far? It wasn't me!
