I really get jools cred and talent and generally like "later" and ive seen threads about recorded "live" sessions , maybe I am missing something and the live bit is purely that we see the artists are breathing in real time but....

I have just seen Muse again , and I know that if I move insignificantly from the mic or turn away , my vocal falls out of the mix , I know my technique is not fantastic, but I cannot believe that the performance coming through my TV speakers is that which is being performed "live" in a number of cases .

then PIL come on and it looks pukka ??

By all accounts (being an old progger) I should dislike PIL and enjoy Muse. Oddly though, the reverse is nearer the mark. Muse just don't press any buttons for me, whereas PIL I kind of like. I couldn't stand the Sex Pistols or anything resembling 'punk', but Mr Rotten and his gang make me want to listen.

And, how the hell does that guy make a mandolin sound so good?

I think that Muse are plastic proggers, or corportate proggers, if you know what I mean. PIL are much more real.

Muse have gone all out for a stadium rock sound and it's made them a ton of money so they obviously achieved their goal. PIL were art rockers and did what they did for the jollies, so you'd expect them to appeal more to musicians, and apparently they do.

I don't really like Muse's music, but they've got talent and a sense of humour and they seem to put on a good show so good on them.

I thought the sound was better on this show than it has been for a while, re all the bands. Whilst a major Sex Pistols fan, aside from a few tracks I`ve never really got PIL - until I saw them live a couple of months ago. It really is music that you have to "feel" as well as hear.

I didn't really mean to have a muse v PIL argument , though I too am very much getting more from the 'punk' genre now than I did originally probably, in a middle age, middle class hijacking kind of way I guess, that would offend the stapled devotees.

I was rather, dissapointed at the "live" or lack of it aspect to the show , I would hate it to fall into the TOTP cheese fest that it became.

I thought Muse were live. Very produced, but definitely live. I did think that matt Bellamy's vocals were very good. He is not one of the worlds greatest singers, imho.

PiL were very raw and came across really well. I would like to see them live. I bet it is a blast.

Nah, the stapled devotees aren't stapled so much as safetypinned and razorbladed.

Me, I middle-class-hijacked punk music in the late seventies after initially having wished it went to Hull, but I must surely revisit PIL, coz in the mid eighties I saw no reason at all to even finish listening to one song.

I do like Muse to some limited degree, but can't be arsed to buy a song. The Jools thing was kinda cool and refreshing to me despite its obvious drawing on U2.

However, the use of the Kitara seemed limited. That or the Kitara is limited. Idunno, but the technology allows for a lot more. For the time being, the Kitara sounds like its in baby shoes - judging from the YT vids.

Some judicial use of phaser and a humungous analog delay, so I'm told! It's actually a Baglama - I had to do some research to find that out. 'That guy' is Lu Edmonds, who played with The Damned.

I wouldn't have described myself as a PIL fan, but they were excellent last night, really enjoyed them.

Pil I thought were the best thing on the show. I was really impressed with the sounds that guy got from that Baglama (ta Pete, wondered what it was!)

I`m not really a Muse fan but they were ok. They could do with using some more effects though

But the Beach Boys? I know they may have been good in the past but it was like watching your grandad doing a song at a family get together when he is past it and no one has the decency to tell him. And how many people were there on stage anyway? And Gollum on vocals and guitar?

Just to address this point... Much depends on what type/brand of microphone is being used, and how it's treated at the board. I'm not sure what you use regularly but I'm willing to bet Later... Live has some pretty tasty gear!!!

I was in a "Cabaret Band" when punk hit, suits, harmonies all the flash (then), our guitarist, bless 'im, wanted to go Punk. Well he was told was'nt he. I personally did not connect, but, after watching Johnny over years I must say he has something, it not pleasing on the ears, but its a truthfull sound.

When I started out in Liverpool there were a number of harmony bands the Escorts probably the best (Everlery's) but there was also a four piece (White Fenders) doing incredible Beach Boys type Harmonies, the name escapes me as do most things these days. Ah, just remembered the name, The Easybeats. Anyway I was amused that the Beach Boys needed 15 guys to replicate what a four did way back then and as much as i admire his "Legendary" Genius you really don't need a stroke/drug abuse victim on stage do you. Just say in'.

Muse, he uses Status....er that's it.

Depends on the mic - what you are describing is known as the [b]proximity effect[/b], and it is more pronounced in some mics than in others.

God almighty! I bought a couple of early muse albums in HMV sales a few years back.,( don't play them anymore)
That disco song was dreadful. Didn't mind pil ( JR does look a bit like wurzel gummidge. )
Catweazle is good.
As for xx ..total lifeless crap IMHO. Beach boys? Not relevant anymore, go away.

Wish jools would get Rush, Rammstein or Slayer on his show to,liven things up a bit.

The sound was pretty good this time.

Muse were ok and Madness was probably the best song from them. What was that bass he was using? It looked like Mansons got their hands on a Status and stuck on one of their touch pad things from Matt's guitar. Good to see Chris slapping again in the second song

PIL were good and that Baglama playing was memorable.

The Beach Boys were disapointing and had way too many people on stage. I lost count of how many guitars there were (4 or 5?) and everyone seemed to do backing vocals.

Didn't watch anything else as we recorded it for Muse & PIL really.
