An old FM tuner is a good thing to have, for the same reasons. Cheap to buy and, as long as you're in a decent signal area (proper aerials can be a bit pricey) and can get results with a piece of wet string, it can give you access to a load of interesting stuff.

You've got a chorus section with some structure. A verse with looser structure and the rest is just jamming. IMO there's no need to "learn" more than the chorus section. Just get the feel right and you've cracked it.

Would love to hear your thoughts and maybe some sounds when you’ve settled in with it.

One last thing from me and I'll shut up. The above is more or less what I do, except my 'pedalboard' is just a Sansamp Programmable. In my case I have a single lightweight speaker, an LFS Monza, and my amp (TC Elf) is in the bass case with the SansAmp so bass on my back and one hand free to open doors. The Monza is beyond the £600 budget but the Goodwood is cheaper and only 9kg. The LFSys have a ruler flat response which is what you need from a 'does everything' set up. The only issue is that LFSys are such new designs that your chance of buying a used one are remote and you would have to stretch your budget.

Unusually I use it to switch between DB and BG but have used it as you describe for DB only gigs. Works really well, independent HP filter/notch filter plus EQ on each channel means you can make the most of the microphone whilst managing feedback and use the pick up channel to boost more volume without the same feedback sensitivity. Works great!

Thread resurrection, my classic rock band have decided to do this, what a song and what a bass workout. I’m up to about 3mins at the moment. I’ve not found any of the individual parts that taxing, but holy memory capacity Batman, remembering them all is just crazy. I’m sincerely hoping that the next 6mins or so just repeat the first 3mins twice again however I’ve a feeling that just ain’t gonna be the case. If I had any doubts as to how good a bassist The Ox was this has removed the last of them.

Hi, I'm in the market for a maple jazz bass neck. Any ideas where to pick up one for roughly £150? Obviously eBay is an option and Northwest guitars sells them. Any ideas or recommendations?

UPDATE on my budget number 1 Squier Affinity P bass. Since taking ownership in autumn 2025 it’s had a few more tweaks. In addition to the Tonerider Classic P pickup and Fender Vintage 60s bridge I installed late last year, I’ve also sourced some identical machine heads from a 1997 Squier neck to replace two that were on their last legs. It’s also just had some proper metal knobs installed and a parchment which scratchplate, which takes me back to being a kid and marvelling at Francis Buchholz (RIP) from the Scorpions and his red P bass. Thumb rest on order to complete the faux 60s look. Been using it extensively for rehearsals and gigs and it’s playing in nicely to how I want it.

Thanks for the reply, JPJ. I will put this on the shopping list along with a suitable replacement for the dying amp.

Bit late but saw the Illegal Eagles on Wednesday night at the Civic Theatre in Chelmsford. This is their 30 year anniversary tour although, a true Triggers broom, it is an entirely different band now. Certainly an entirely different band to the one I used to see when Ray Brown was singing. Anyhoo. They are nothing short of brilliant. Five in the band, five vocals (Including Blow Monkeys drummer Tony Kiley), four of whom are good enough to front any band, one of whom (bass player and apparent band leader Trevor Newnham) has one of the finest voices I have heard live. Harmonies are out of this world and three of them are talented multi-instrumentalists. They aren't scared to do deep cuts - starting the evening off with 'Midnight Flyer' and throw in some Joe Walsh and Don Henley solo stuff. Last year they played all of 'Desperado' including obscure songs like 'Bitter Creek'. Fabulous. I saw the Eagles proper on their 'History' tour, while everyone was still alive, and reckon this bunch can walk shoulder to shoulder with them. If you like the music of the Eagles, go seek them out - they tour constantly all over the country.

I can't see my Goliath Jr III cabs going anywhere - their sound is still so good. They had a good but busy life before they came to me but I'm at least ten years in with them now and have found little else that keeps up tonally. My modded Ashdown 2x10 is very good (fitted with Celestion Pulse - myself and Phil Starr had extensive communication over their suitability plus I took it upon myself to remove the resistor in HF circuit) and is now notably closer to the SWR cabs than the original spec. Proper job! 🥰

It frustrates the hell out of me, Brits using Imperial measurements. I am 74, I grew up with the Imperial system but when I started in Engineering in the late 60s, I had to change to the SI system. Imperial disappeared for the public 50 odd years ago. Get over it. You would not want to buy something fitted with UNC or UNF threads on the screws, why live your life in the past? Now I have to decide whether to take my 34" or 30" bass to rehearsal.🤣
