Some fine talent listed above; even more talent not (yet..?) mentioned, of course..!

My top 3..? Just 3 of many, but I'd like to play alongside...

Joe Morello (most renowned with Dave Brubeck...)

Spencer Dryden (from the best period of Jefferson Airplane...)

Bill Kreutzmann (founding drummer with the Grateful Dead...)

... If any of the above are unavailable (... ), there's plenty of deps: any drummer from the Zappa crews (Bozio..?), any of the top-flight 'kings' (Weckl..?) Dave Mattocks... No, the list will be too long. I'll stop while I'm ahead. ;)

Agree with the comment about bill ward i have a dvd of sabbath live in paris 1971 i think and he is on top form.
My choices are
1. Vinny appice- love the drums on mob rules
2. Topper headon- always liked his drum sound
3. Ginger baker - when i first heard cream i just loved his style of playing
So basically i like a drummer who utilises the toms!
some dont seem to use them?
And im not afraid to say i even like roto toms
My advice to drummers roll out the toms.

Been lucky enough to play with a few name drummers and 1 or 2 were/are very special.
One of the best things about that is that you get a take on 'real' talent..IMO and what it takes
to get to the top.
So, if these guys are any indication of the talent that you need to have, then that would make my list massive...

OK, if they're going to play with me they'll have to be quite nice and not too scary. So I'd go for:

Cozy Powell - I met him once and he seemed friendly
Jo Morello - was a wonderful teacher by all accounts, so hopefully would be patient
Carl Palmer - also does a bit of teaching, and is a Brummie, so I might feel a bit more at ease with him.

Without these fellows, their bands just wouldn't sound the same:

Ringo Starr (The Beatles)
Jet Black (The Stranglers)
Stewart Copeland (The Police)

I'd also add the late Charley Charles from The Blockheads. His drumming on the first three albums added real character to the songs. Could anyone else imagine 'Reasons To Be Cheerful (Part 3)' with a different beat?

Oh.. I forgot the late Paul Hester from Crowded House. Great player, taught by his mum, who was one of Australia's best jazz drummers apparently. According to Neil Finn, no one can play Weather with you like Paul, and his performance in their Sydney Opera House farewell gig shows how good he was. Played his arse off for over 2 hours.

Number one would be Jean-Paul from Clutch, so much groove and feel, but still rocks it.

+1 to mr jean paul gaster.
he'd be on the list for me also.
I'd love to have a bash with seb rochford from polar bear and glenn kotche from wilco. Both add so much to whoever they play with yet totally complement them.
