Low freqs went to a bass amp, higher ones went to a guitar amp. With effects pedals on both sides. It sounded immense!! I think he may still do it. clauster Posted August 4, 2011 Share Posted August 4, 2011 Another happy BF Compact owner. I'd like to add either a midget or (more likely) a second compact one day, but no rush yet. The head I bought to go with it is the Hartle LH500. Not a bad head, especially once you realise that everything at 12 O'clock is not flat eq, but in attempt to see if I could hear how sensitive it was I got out my Ashdown EB180 combo and swapped between the two speakers. As soon as I unplugged the combo speaker and plugged in the compact, THAT was the tone I wanted Now thinking about saving for an ABM500, or a PF500 (as the cab has woken me up to the whole lightweight thing). pantherairsoft Posted August 4, 2011 Share Posted August 4, 2011 I've been using my EBS HD350 & EBS Neo 212 for 18 months now. I even tried the TD650 & Fafner head but go back to the HD350. I like the head so much I own 2! And I changed my portable Wizzy cab for an EBS Neo 110. HD350 + 212 for big stuff, HD350 + 110 for home and little gigs. God I love the sound. Everytime I try something else I just go back. I'll lend you a HD350 for a few days if you want to give it a try as you only live 'up the road'. Wilco Posted August 4, 2011 Share Posted August 4, 2011 I've had my rig (as per my sig) about a year now, & to be honest have not had any GAS at all to change anything since I started using it. The Ashdown cabs are brilliant - having a 15 inch speaker in one cab & two 10 inchers in the other + both cabs having switchable tweeters, means I've got broad range of frequencies on tap & they have great tone. They are light having neodymium speakers, but at the same time they have what seems like a bombproof build quality. I think am unlikely to ever change these for what I do. I swapped out the cheap Sovtek valve in the Hartke head as soon as I got it, & put in a Gold Lion Custom Tube & the thing simply rocks - very, very loudly!!! I play in a 5 piece loud rock covers band & I don't think I've ever had the volume on more than 4.... I've really grown to love the simplicity of the amp controls - 3 dials + 1 button = any sound you want really. Again it feels bombproof in build & has great tone. The only part of the spec where it falls down is the DI out. This is pre eq & effects loop only which I just don't understand - wouldn't have taken much to put a pre-post switch on the amp. IMO if you run separate head & cabs rig, don't ignore the quality of your cabling - I use Klotz LY215T cables with Neutrik plugs - superb clarity. Would possibly like to swap my Trace Cabs for an EBS 2x12 or 4x10 to go with the Fafner, but nothing major as that has been my opinion for the last 2 years, so I can obviously live with my current rig. To be honest, I'd love a proper old school ampeg rig, but the cons (where to store it, how to transport it and the cost) vastly outweigh the small improvement in tone and the "look at my rig" grin I would have. My smaller rig is still big, loud and looks awesome (though to lesser extents) and sounds incredible, it's lighter and smaller though. Between these two I'm 100% happy with my rigs. I can never get that sound thats in my head, and I normally have to buy blind because I cant try out the things I want anywhere locally. I havnt been in a band in a while though, so it doesnt help that I dont really hear my sound in the mix. I dont have the money to keep chopping and changing so I just put up with what ive got, its better than having nothing to play through. burno70 Posted August 5, 2011 Share Posted August 5, 2011 I think its difficult to be completely happy with anything now that we have the internet - different gear is just a click away, the latest fads, the latest products, it just feeds gas, the grass is always greener etc. Personally I bought a markbass rig 3 or 4 years ago, the local shops didn't have anything that I really fancied and this brand was causing a stir on the net at the time. Never been completely happy with it. Sounded ok but not enough punch for me. I've off loaded the cabs now (which were maligned by some) and have ordered a Barefaced Super12T, I'm hoping that will make a difference. Fingers crossed! No colour on the tone when flat so i had to ditch a couple of basses that had previously sounded ok on other rigs. My back loves it and though it is light it has incredible power when needed with no loss of quality - sounds great in the studio and through a PA. One thing i would change is the DI on the amp so that it had a preEQ switch. 120 gigs over the last couple of years with this rig and no intention of changing. Using a Trace V-Type 300H with a couple of Harma Telefunken ECC803S clones in the preamp, going into a 'Loud Inc.' 1x15 cab that I recently picked up cheap on BC. Articulate & punchy, clear transparent tone to my ears & more than enough volume. No rig GAS for me, despite trying quite a lot of stuff in the meantime (including the PF500 and a Drophead) tho I will admit to wondering what a Barefaced Super Twelve would sound like... I have changed the valve but other than that, my technical skills are limited to plugging it in & switching it on, so I have less than half a clue!
