1.
It's simple, there are a small number of people in the world with more money than they know what to do with. So do they use it to fund research to cure cancer? Help the poorest in the third world? Fund space exploration to further mankind? Nope, they buy trinkets to try and out do one another.
Where's the "like" button when you need it!
2. There shouldn't be any reason why you cannot slap with the Ibanez, it is perfectly capable, the only bass I can think of that probably wouldn't suit slap is a Rickenbacker but no doubt someone will be along in a minute with a video of a Rick being slapped within an inch of it's life! The Yamaha has a cracking reputation, I doubt you would regret buying one
3. I really like the angle of cut on the edge bevel (if you know what I mean) so many of the aftermarket guards just don't show enough of the white under ply, I love the look of those original basses with the tort guards with that distinct white edge
4. Done, but question 2 could probably be worded a bit better as it confused me.....but then so do cows so that's not saying much!
5. Can't answer 1 or 2 but I use Duracell rechargeables in my basses and a block power supply if I am using pedals, there may or may not be batteries still inside, I can't remember!
6.
Just to add the bridge I used was a Gotoh 201B
I fitted the same bridge to my Tokai Jazz Sound, it was a straight swap over
7. 80's Japanese stuff is becoming more and more desirable, Westone Thunder 1's being offered up at £400+ The worlds gone crazy! Thing is if people keep offering them up for silly money then the ones priced well over what they were a few years ago suddenly start looking more attractive and the assumed market value moves up. Look at Stingrays at the moment, most private sellers on Ebay are asking more for their standard basses than Andy Baxter is asking for the same basses, I think that suggests that in the current market most Stingrays are over priced? Another example being the USA made Sub bass, they are starting to appear upwards of £500 at the moment, they were £300 or so a couple of years back, I know that I have said Stingrays are overpriced at the moment so we seem to be seeing the SUB model moving into the territory where the prime models used to be found Fender Precision lyte's are being offered for silly money at the moment with beaten up incomplete examples being offered up for £400+ double what they fetched a couple of years ago. Prices for gear in general seems to be a lot higher than it was a couple of years ago, whether any of it sells is a different matter!
8. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/fender-bass-/172572360550?hash=item282e1d3f66:g:lVgAAOSwzgBYxVN~ Found this on Ebay today, clearly not a genuine Fender, I have messaged the seller and explained why it is not genuine and what it is likely to be....I got the message back "Ok thanks" I assumed the seller may either pull the listing or at least edit it....it appears not. Great target for someone to buy it, wait until it turns up, rightly claim it is not as advertised and get Paypal to refund their money = free bass!
9. Saw Three Colours Red on the same bill as 60ft Dolls and the Wildhearts some years back, 3 awesome bands, sorry no info on where Pete disappeared to though
10. I think I will stick to two different basses rather than the one to conquer all!
11. Isn't that the shop on Hadleigh Road? If so I thought was pretty big already and stuffed full of expensive goodies!
12.
Thanks everyone It's a Korg Triton , its way to big but I borrowed it from our keyboard player who doesn't play it anymore and I'm used to it Want to play something smaller like a Novation , but I need a few weeks I think to sort this and no time before sat to get used to anything else
I do similar in our band, I went out to buy a suitable bass synth, I was looking at the Novation Bassstation 2 synth but was entirely underwhelmed by it, I also tried the Moog fatty and wasn't taken with that either, I ended up buying the new Roland System 8 which is fantastic but totally over the top for my bass part needs, if you want to spend sensible money the Roland System 1 seems to be a decent option
13. I really struggle, I have the dealer edition Warwick which doesn't suit my current band so rarely gets used, however, if at some point in time I find myself playing in a funky band the Warwick will be absolutely spot on, I know I need to sell it but I know if I do the chances of getting another are very slim
14. Edgy Indie Disco...now there's a new genre for you! The first of five new songs we plan to release this year, recorded in the singers kitchen with a laptop and a lot of patience! Interested in what you make of it? Rog Not sure if I have attached it in the right format, but you can open the file with a media player?
15. I ended up discussing this with the seller on Facebook, I had said I would be surprised if it attracted many bids given the starting price and I would be even more surprised if anyone hit buy it now! He said he had loads of people watching so we would see who was correct!.....lovely bass and all that but way too higher starting price
16. Nice bass but the knobs are not original and I don't think the bridge is original (should be black) I have the same bass in pearl white.
17. A Marlin Sidewinder was my first brand new guitar, I didn't keep it long as someone offered me a swap for a black Jedson Les Paul, which I really liked, The Marlin was fine in the short period I owned it. Amp wise I think I had a combo branded as Highton or something similar, it had a gain channel that did absolutely nothing 9/10 of the dial but when turned up over 9 it squealed like a b'stard, I sold it to a mate who left it switched on whilst he went downstairs for some dinner, he came back half and hour later to find it on fire in his bedroom!!
18. I used to own the Jedson Telecaster that appears in the opening scenes of The Great Rock n Roll Swindle, it was given to me by a chap who worked on the film, stupidly as a spotty teenager I wanted a bass so I swapped it for a Precision copy with a mate who wanted a guitar, neither of us saw it as on any significance at the time, it was just a cheap guitar!
19. This is a difficult decision, I joined a covers band some years back, initially as bassist but the guys in the band were worried that I had far more experience than they had, so I suggested "why don't I come in on rhythm guitar so we all grow at the same pace" I played guitar with them for 3 years, it massively improved my guitar playing and gave me much greater insight into how the bass and guitar should interact...so all positive then? Well no, I got fed up with the bass player we had refusing to practice and yet making all the mistakes, I got a little fed up with working really hard on guitar and not really enjoying gigs, we finally kicked the bass player out and I went on to bass for about 10 gigs whilst a replacement was brought up to speed, I soon realised just how much I enjoyed playing the bass...to such an extent that as soon as the new bassist was up to speed I left the band! About a month later the new bassist's work commitments changed and he was forced to leave the band, I gladly rejoined and remained as bassist for the duration of the bands existence. So yes, playing the guitar live will certainly help you improve as a guitarist but you may find yourself becoming frustrated with it in the end
20. If I am honest, it was Sid Vicious, covered in blood, bare chested wielding a battered Precision, he just looked seriously cool and my parents hated him....the innocence of youth and all that!
21. Where have all the Carlsboro amps gone? They never seemed to go wrong so they must still be around, they sounded OK and were not overly heavy, Westone Thunder 1/1a through a Carlsboro amp seems to be a bit of a classic starter package of the 80's
22. Take a day trip to Norwich if you want to be certain, Norwich is lovely (ish) I went down to Eastbourne to collect a bass last year, brought the good lady wife fish and chips on the seafront after collecting the bass, make a day of it?
23. Aston University circa 1986 supporting a band called Stress who were no 12 in the charts that week Westone Thunder 3 fretless bass (with an alloy necked Kramer as back up borrowed from the band's guitarist) Carlsboro Cobra 90 head 2 x 1x12 unnamed bass cabs ( actually from memory 1 was a guitar cab of some sorts)
24. I brought a lovely Tokai 335 in a battered but functional hard case for £200.00 the guitar was mint the case was fine, it was delivered pretty well wrapped, no complaints from me, I sold the guitar on a week later for £325.00
25. I actually invented a new style, Happy Jack, this may suit you! It's called banging Bungalow it's like Hard House for those too old to want to worry about stairs
