1. Wow, what an open and honest insight into a fantastic musician, really enjoyed it!
2. Cheers for the reminder, I had forgotten that was on
3. I hope you haven't missed the Andy McCluskey station, that's the one nearest my house!
4. From memory I think when I used one I found it seriously under powered but, I can't remember exactly what the wattage rating was now so it could have been a low powered one? I wasn't inspired by it
5.
I usually just tune them all a semitone sharp when they first go on, then put them back to concert pitch after an hour or two. Usually does the trick for bass strings -
+1, never broken a string and have no tuning problems, I do try and ensure I fit new strings a good few days before a gig so they can sit at concert pitch for a few days after the initial semitone higher tuning
6. That really is a random picture to put up with the ad!
7.
It seems the majority would take the lesser fee and a busy night then? As most of us are probably semi pro that would make sense. I liked the comment about how having one or 2 nights of live bands, even if its a loss maker, still brings in a few regulars through the rest of the week, gives me a bit of faith about the longevity of the business model! I suppose the other elephant in the room is the material we play. As an old farts rock band, the punters are all pretty much getting older. If I was in a more contemparary setup playing chart sh*te its possible we might get to play in pubs for a younger crowd although I don't know if such places exist that want live music (or old men playing chart stuff!) I think I have to accept its a "dying" demographic, evoloution and all that..
I am not sure it actually is a dying demographic, we played in Leicester again last night, not many people as ever but 4 acts, 3 were younger artists and ourselves who are definitely not younger artists! All three brought a few people with them so, in what was quite a small room, it made for a decent crowd, interestingly the songs that got the largely younger crowd up and dancing were covers of Jam songs, a Green Day number and a cracking cover of Erasure's Blue Savannah song. So even with a largely younger audience they will still get up and dance to the old songs which, in some ways, is encouraging
8. I gigged my USA Sub for the first time last night through the Mark Bass LM3 and 102 Traveller cab, due to stage size restrictions I ended up with my amp one side of the stage whilst I stood the other side of the stage with the amp angled across stage, it sounded fantastic, probably the best on stage sound I have had. I certainly didn't notice any weakness in the G string sound
9. I would probably have avoided any mention of Rolfe in the advert!
10. It made prefectly find fence to me!
11. It's nice to hear a company going that extra mile for you so as to improve the products they offer, it is also nice to hear from someone who can acurately articulate what they want in a pickup, I end up trying loads and finding one I like, In my P basses I love the Lindy Fralin pickups but I couldn't tell you what I prefer about them to Seymour Duncan's or stock pickups so I would probably be pretty useless if they wanted to design my perfect pickup! I just like the sound they produce in my basses with my playing style
12. My local shop / PA service centre highly recommended the Yamaha P7000S power amp as both light weight and excellent quality
13. I wonder if there is a bit of psychology in this, do some musicians feel they are perhaps not good enough to warrant a top of the range bass? I have an American Precision but prefer the Mexican 50's Classic and Roadworn, I had owned countless Stingray's and never took to any of them, I have just picked up a US made Sub bass and finally I find a Stingray I feel at home with. I have a cracking dealer edition Warwick $$ Corvette it has never been a go to bass for me, I dig it out from time to time, give it a whirl, think how great it is to play, then put it away and go back to a cheaper bass! I can't and never will be able to play like my bass idols despite having been playing for over 30 years, I know I am a decent bass player and I am sure I am fully deserving of a decent bass but I am not a top bass player so probably don't feel at home on a top end bass....if that makes sense?
14. Are you using an active bass, is the battery dying? If you have tried using different amps and speakers and still get the same fault then it suggests the issue will be elsewhere in the chain
15. I have a $$ Corvette, it's a dealer edition with a Streamer pre amp, it does have a huge range of sounds, people have suggested it as an alternative to a HH Stingray but I don't think it does the Stingray sound to any major degree, if you fancy a trip up to sunny Northampton you are more than welcome to come and have a play on it and make your mind up. To be honest I rarely use the Warwick now as the Yodaclub sound really suits a Precision bass sound.
16.
I think everyone else except me is in a similar situation/going bonkers. I have a bass guitar which is 40+ years old, is a bit bashed up, has imperfections, a few missing screws but I have no desire to fix it or buy another. If it stops working, I'll bodge it up or spend as little as possible getting it fixed. And whatever sound it makes, I make do with/adapt to it.
This is clearly madness, you need to spend more time in the sales forums suffering incurable GAS like the rest of us
17. Hi all, posting this on behalf of Stevie, I am helping them out depping for a few dates but they need someone permanent, I think they are an excellent band and would join them full time if I didn't have other commitments: BASSIST REQUIRED Stevie Jones and The Wildfires are an original four piece acoustic based rock band based in Northants. We have a strong live set, have a following that is positively building, gaining some good radio exposure and have a well-received debut album which we are continuing to promote. We already have tour dates coming up being undertaken now and booking now into next year looking for more dates including festivals and hopefully European gigs. Between us we have a very broad range of influences and are quite diverse and unique in our sound and songs - but as a rough guide rock or country rock that touches John Butler Trio, The Clash, Steve Earle, New Model Army, Counting Crows, Pearl Jam and Ryan Adams. Our new bassist must be experienced both live and in the studio, have own transport and gear, be local enough to rehearse in Kettering (usually on Sunday afternoons as required), and be flexible enough to be on board for gigs near and far (mainly weekends). We are not a covers act - we are a 100% original band so sometimes there is not much money to be made but we always try and cover expenses where possible. You must be with us because you love the music we create, want to be part of it and help it move forward. Ideally looking for someone in age range 24-50.This will not be suitable for anyone also frequently gigging in another projects. **We ask you to please check us out fully to get a good idea of our sound before getting in touch. 18. In Northampton we seem to have the Charles Bradlaugh (if you can ever speak to the people that handle bookings) The Lamplighter, The King Billy (which is apparently now looking for bands outside of the heavy rock genre) and possibly the Black Prince. No point in trying the Roadmender especially if you are a local band, they never get a look in anymore!
19. Much as others on here, I started with crap (an Ohm Tramp...which I still have and actually still quite like!) Then through the Trace era with a nice SM300 head and the standard 1x15 4x10 set up, I then progressed to a Trace Twin Valve and a Mesa Boogie 1516E which was the best rig I ever owned, once that had completely trashed my back I finally found my way to Mark Bass gear because it sounded good but more importantly weighed a damn site less! Still got the Mark Bass gear and added a Ampeg SVT 7Pro for that Ampeg sound......not that I think it actually delivers any kind of classic Ampeg niceness, so take the Ampeg as a back up class D amp if the Mark Bass ever gives up!
20. I am with TheBrig on this, I have emailed the seller of a used £900+ Dee Dee Ramone Precision bass this afternoon to ask him how this bass differs to the brand new Dee Dee Ramone Precision's on sale for £671.00....I await a response It may be easy to take advantage of the unaware but it doesn't mean you should!
21. The nut work is to be marvelled at, I reckon it is a Maya or similar manufacturer, it will no doubt make a nice bass once renovated, as Grandur noted the body and neck are nice wood, I hate to think what you would pay for a nice 1 piece body like that from a parts supplier. It has to be our job to ensure the "renovation" work is not done the Voldermort of guitar improvements Mr Phillips, someone on hear needs to save this bass!
22. I know there is a lot of love on these hallowed pages for WAL basses, I have never had the chance to play one, so what makes them so special? I have owned a couple of Status basses and could never take to the sound of them, they seemed too thick sounding, all treble and bass with no middle, for some reason I imagine WAL's have the same kind of sound?
23. At pretty much the same money I paid for Mrs2611's current motor, I struggle to lust after it!
24. It looks genuine to me, nice yellowing of Olympic white, depending on the weight it could be a good price, the problem is that basses of this age can be extremely heavy which will always limit their value, who wants to gig with an 11lbs+ bass slung around their neck?
25. I think it is an OCD thing, our guitarist re-tunes between every other song, he plays a mid eighties American Telecaster, so a decent guitar, every time he checks the tuning, surprise surprise it's still in tune but still he checks it. I check mine twice during the set, both times on songs with at least 30 seconds before the bass comes in so it doesn't disrupt the flow of the set any more than absolutely necessary
