Mrs2611 and I watched it this morning, we agreed that the best two bands went through, it's great to see the huge depth of talent we have gigging around this septic isle.....I hope they all get paid for every gig, woe betide any of them that play for free I wonder if the bands that appear on the show are getting paid for their time!

I have long since assumed responsibility for any amp / guitar / bass related repairs and maintenance for any band I play in, it's simple guitarists and keyboard players cannot be trusted to look after their own gear, actually in Yodaclub I supply all the amps, that way I know they will work!...I tend not to worry about drummers as they will usually find something to bash on if they forget their sticks, stool or kit

I think of Fleetwood Mac as two entirely separate bands, the Peter Green era and the Buckingham / Nicks era, even though the founder members remained the same, we go to see Rumours of Fleetwood Mac when they play in Northampton, I always find the Peter Green era section slightly weird as I far less familiar with that version of the band and don't associate that sound with the Fleetwood Mac I know. My favourite live band is Still Little Fingers, Jake Burns and Ally McMordie are the only two original members but as long as Jake remains as front man and song writer they will still be SLF.

Most of the audience don't even realise we play bass, you just have a bigger guitar than the other guy(s) in the band, most wouldn't even know if it was a Fender or a Gibson but may hazard a guess at one or other based on them being the two most known brands. So maybe to other musicians? Possibly, there is certainly music snobbery out there, serious bands are expected to play serious instruments and other than a few select Squier's they are not generally regarded as pro end instruments. It maybe unfair and incorrect but unfortunately it is brand image, there are probably still bands out there where if don't use a Fender you don't get the gig! I don't get the preciousness over the decal, surely for those people annoyed by a bass with a replica decal fitted that should also stretch to the many high end copies sold under differing brand names, the likes of Limelight....blatant Fender clones, Lakland, Shuker, Tokai etc all with instruments that are obviously hugely influenced by Fender basses, if you are offended by these copies your choice of instrument ends up being very limited. Most guitars and basses out there have designs lifted from those first Fender and Gibson electric guitars which is testament to the fact that Leo Fender, in particular, got it so right first time

[/quote] Agree totally, they are certainly more exclusive and I think that is the way Rickenbacker want it to be, there is nothing wrong with that business model, Fender's model has to be somewhat different being as there are already so many copies out there, by embracing the copies but producing high quality examples of their own they still create that exclusivity. Despite the endless supply of copies out there a USA Precision or Jazz still has good residuals but I would hazard a guess that more people lust after a Fender than lust after a Rickenbacker because more people have played a Fender type guitar than a Rickenbacker type guitar. So Fender shift more units. Neither approach is wrong but Mr Hall's approach surprises me given how good his instruments seem to be (from my experience I hasten to add!)

I have a couple of home built Precision's with Fender logo's applied, I have absolutely no "penis envy" to own a real Fender, I already own too many of them, yet choose to gig with the basses I have built myself...why apply the logo, purely aesthetically, it completes the look of the bass, I would never sell the bass as a Fender and as other have already said, it is not difficult to spot that it is not a "real" Fender. I am not trying to fool anyone with the logo, especially me, I have a Mike Dirnt Squier Precision, totally rebuilt, all replacement parts, custom colour, Fender logo applied again however it was such a good bass originally that I have happily left the "Crafted in China" logo and serial number on the back of the neck, it is lacquered in and could not now be removed without a total refinish of the neck, so it is there for life now. Most people that have looked at the bass simply cannot believe it was a budget instrument! So again not trying to fool anyone. Most, but not all obviously! Of the copy Rickenbacker's out there are, to me, hugely inferior to the real deal, the Rockinbetter clone is about half as big again as the real deal, I had a couple and got rid because they felt so cumbersome, but it sparked enough interest for me to go and play the real thing, yes, I was hugely impressed with them to the point that I am probably going to buy one...today...yes really! I do believe that the copy basses create a desire to own the real thing, I think Fender know that and that is why they are not so protective of their trademarks (and I guess the sheer amount of clones out there would make any effort at protection rather futile now) I do think Rickenbacker are wrong in their aggressive pursuit of copy instruments for the same reasons given above, however, you cannot argue that a Rickenbacker bass has better residual values than the majority of Fender basses have

I have done both, the covers element gives you that gig sharpness, stagecraft, insight into how other musicians create music, how their bass parts connect with other instruments etc. But the downside is you may well fell constrained by the way the song was originally played, especially if the song has a prominent bass line that is not what you would have written. The originals band gives you far more freedom to use that experience gained doing covers to create your own basslines, to me at the moment, that is the most important part of music for me...the downside is gigs are far harder to come by, they tend to be on weekday evenings miles away (unless you live in a major city I guess) You don't earn anything for your time and getting noticed is a real hard slog. You have to decide how much time you have and, to be honest, what is most important to you, I found it impossible to balance the two bands in the end as the covers band tended to book a year in advance whereas the originals band would be offered good support slots at very short notice, unfortunately that meant that there were date clashes happening too often, I had to make that decision and chose the originals band, which, for me at the moment was the correct decision...that will swing the other way in the future no doubt and I will return to a covers band
  15. I have spent far too much money at PMT in Northampton, they know what they are talking about, have a lot of really nice tempting shiny things, if there is a single downside it is a lack of free parking close by. I would happily recommend them

The trouble seems to be nowadays we are offered increasingly poor service and if we want a better service (what would have been a standard service 10 years ago) we are now expected to pay a premium for it We are having a cooker delivered this week, if we wanted it delivering some time between 9am on Thursday 26th May and August the 15th, it was free, if I wanted to narrow it down at all it became more expensive, if I wanted to narrow it down to a specific day and during daylight hours...well that was in the ultra premium bracket! It's like the current parcel delivery options from Royal Mail, for a top premium price they will deliver next day at a specific time, for a lower price they will deliver with a couple of days and for a rock bottom price they will deliver to someone in your postcode area and you get to go and find it! In a few years time it will even cost you to go and collect it from the sender, the standard service will be you pay for it and they don't let you have it

[/quote] Definitely Marmite, I had one of the Squier Telecaster basses, it played as well as any other Fender I have played, I just couldn't stand the muddy sound from the pickup, long since sold on now, I have replaced it with a Mike Dirnt Precision, Telecaster looks with a Precision sound....perfect!
  21. I share your pain, I am lusting after one at the moment but I am struggling to justify spending well over a grand for a new one especially as I already have some lovely basses. I know it will happen at some point, but I am still fighting the GAS for the moment Just to add fuel to your GAS I played a couple in PMT Northampton the other year and was really impressed with them, both played far better that the copies I have owned.

[/quote] I had this exact discussion with our singer / guitarist at the last gig once I realised I had about 1 foot square to put me and my gear in, I had all the room I needed after clouting him round the back of the head when he decided to leap in the air mid song and promptly staggered off the front of the (fortunately un-raised) stage clutching his head...Precision bass 1 singer's head 0
  24. I guess it depends on which way the tail piece is fitted, I would have thought the pointy bit would face backwards making it left handed...if you get my drift!
  25. It is a Precision for me but I have finally found a bitsa Jazz that I really like and have gigged, but the Precision is always my go to bass
