It actually sounds like your security has done the job you asked it to, yes the scumbags did some damage but your alarm stepped in and scared them off, job done.....I would hope that the thief was put off by what was a close shave with a very angry property owner who could easily have been wielding a baseball bat. No opportunist thief is going to hang with an alarm ringing away, lights coming on in the house and threats of impending serious physical harm coming from an open window! beef up your security if you feel the need to but if the thief is determined to have another go then irrespective of your security upgrades then they are still going to do damage. I would be asking you neighbour to improve their security as next time they break into their shed, the tools may be used to break into their house instead! I had the same situation last year when scumbags came in through next doors insecure gate and broke into our shed and stole our bikes..... neighbour requested to secure their gate, shed now fully alarmed and door stickered up saying "this shed is alarmed" bikes are now chained to a properly mounted floor anchor, half a pool cue by the back door, peace of mind not fully restored but it's the best I can do at the moment.

Some rooms are acoustically dire, it doesn't matter what you are doing the sound will be awful onstage, however that doesn't mean it's awful out front, some of the gigs where I have struggled most with onstage sound has had audience members commenting on how good the sound is. I will always do a mic check before the band goes onstage, no point in starting if the singers mic isn't working.

From the info I can find online, it is a genuine bass, from the late 80's into the 90's the SQ series was built in Japan and then production was moved to Mexico, from what I read it should be of similar quality to the Silver Series range -

I can't do Sandanista at all and I think London Calling could have been better as two separate releases with a bit of time in between releases so as to take out the weaker songs -

If you don't need to sell them, then don't, the VM5 may well be "the one" for the moment and the others may get neglected for a while, but at some point you will pick them up again and wonder why you ever put them down, as you say, you spent time and money on finding the right basses for you, they will still be the right basses in six months time when you fancy playing something different for a while. I am not sure why we seem to feel the need to identify "the one" bass, why can't we have a bunch of basses all of which fulfill our needs?.....That's what GAS is all about! -

OCD or what, amazing bit of work! Even down to Lords of the New Church as a UK post punk band, tough call, I would have said more American than British but Wikipedia has then as American / British -
Our covers band was told on a few occasions that we would need to have a PAT test certificate before we could play their venues, we decided to bite the bullet and get it done but of the places that demanded it none ever asked us to produce the certificate or even checked the gear on set up!

Most, if not all pro acts are using IEM's I don't see why it shouldn't filter down to pub bands, especially, as already mentioned, that the normal pub band PA is usually a compromise of cost, size and weight versus sound quality, the use of IEM's should make life easier for the PA, allow for a more controllable sound out front and it should give a consistent sound for the musicians at every venue. I wonder if in a few years time most gigging musicians will carry their own set which would be run through the venues system, I ask this as we are playing smaller venues in Leicester quite a bit at the moment, usually with a great out front PA and a compromised monitor system, if IEM's become the norm I wonder if musicians will carry their own systems for that consistency of sound at every venue?

Hi Jonny, It should be an excellent bass, the only reason they are so cheap at the moment is because the pointy headstock look is rather out of fashion, I am sure you will find it an easy match for a Silver Series Squire or a Classic Vibe bass (although the classic vibe is from a different era completely) If you can live with the pointy headstock I am sure you will end up with a cracking bass and, if they ever come back into fashion you will have an original Jap bass which surely at that point will go up in value

Isn't a lot of this down to the title description? If the title is "1962 pre CBS Precision bass" then it is not going to be a sub £500 bass, a 5 string or an active bass, Same as "Ken Smith 5 string" is not going to be a pre CBS Precision bass, I have a look at the market place most days....ok I lie, it's everyday, I am really not into 5 string custom built basses so as long as the title description is decent then I won't click into an ad that doesn't appeal to me. I am not fussed if the bass for sale is overseas as if it is the "right" bass then the fact it is overseas only adds another hurdle to be overcome but it would still be the right bass

I have recounted this on here before, not really one that got away, more some one took advantage of my lack of knowledge at the time, Many years back I paid the going rate of about £300 for a very battered 1979 sunburst Precision which I gigged happily for about 3 years, anyway when the band packed up I wanted some studio gear so looked to sell the Precision, I spoke to a local guitar shop who said he would take a look at it and make an offer.....I was expecting about £350 back at the time as a sale through a dealer, he took it to bits, made a phone call and offered me £1300 for it there and then, which unsurprisingly, I took. I always regretted selling the bass as it was a really light stunning sounding bass and I always wondered why he had paid so far over the odds for it. The shop changed hands over the years, I went in one day and the guy who brought my bass was in the shop, so I asked him why he had offered far more than market value for it, he conceded that yes, the neck was 1979, the rest of the bass and the case was a pukka 62 Precision so was in fact worth far more than he paid me for it! The phone call he made was to the previous owner who had been looking to buy the bass back for a number of years. I knew noting about Nitro / Poly finishes, pot dates, different era cases or the multitude of other things that would have identified it as a pre CBS bass, just the S9 serial number on the headstock which confirmed it was a 79 neck Nowadays with the help of the tinterweb I guess I would have been more clued up, always wonder what happened to that one!

[/quote] Totally agree, we have been using Cubase on a 5 year old Asus laptop running Windows 7 to a Tascam 244 for all of our recordings, they have been good enough to get national airplay, if you get the best possible signal in then even an older budget laptop can deliver excellent results

[/quote] I use this approach, there is science behind this, something like the lacquer on your neck is so smooth you get a build up of moisture between your hand and the neck, by roughing the neck up very slightly that moisture is dissipated into the tiny scratches you have created and hence the "stickiness is gone, you can always polish the neck back up in the future should you wish to make it sticky again

Amazingly fast across the fretboard, when she discovers the "less is more" approach I imagine she will be phenomenal, although it is not my style of music at all, I love this style of bass playing, I just wish I could play like that!
