1.
I really like playing Long Road To Ruin from this album, really nice bass in it, nothing flashy, just works
Great song, we used to play it in the covers band, never went down well for some reason so sadly we dropped it but it was one i really liked playing, we were doing Times Like These which stayed around in the set longer than any other Foo's songs we played, I would certainly look at The Pretender in future covers bands
2. I always try to look after my gear, always use a stand etc. I wouldn't deliberately damage any of them but if they do pick up a ding it is part of that proper vintage mojo that many desire over the factory faked look, on stage I play mostly older Fender basses, i think they look better a little run in, on the other hand I would be annoyed if my Warwick picked up a dent as it is still in mint condition.
3. I have seen quite a few tribute / faker acts in recent years, Rumours of Fleetwood Mac, an ELO tribute, a brilliant Abba tribute act, the Counterfeit Stones etc all were brilliant, I would happily attend a festival with that line up as, quite simply, I am never going to attend a festival featuring the original artists on the same bill....even if they did play again I wouldn't be able to afford the tickets
4. I think I responded to your other thread on this, take it to a local bodyshop, they have the facilities to do you a grand job, they won't strip it right back to the wood, they will just key it, prime it and paint it whatever colour you desire.....if it is not stripped back to bare wood then it is exactly the same as painting a car bonnet or bumper....any bodyshop with a decent reputation will return you a body you will be happy with. http://www.howardbasford.co.uk/crewe.php this is a company I have had dealings with over the years and have always returned good quality workmanship, they are not too far from the location in your signature, ring them up and ask the question
5. So I am guessing you don 't like promoters then
6. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/fender-squier-precision-bass-/201504158939?hash=item2eea9574db:g:broAAOSwL7VWlQS4 At least he hasn't described it as matching headstock!
7. The pickup description made me smile, definitely a quality "Squire" bass for sale! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-Squire-Vintage-Modified-Precision-Bass-Guitar-Duncan-Seymour-pick-ups-/181992606208?hash=item2a5f9aca00:g:oeAAAOSw5dNWmSDQ
8. I replied to an add for a bass player wanted some years back and ended up going to meet a guitarist that had been playing for some twenty years or more......definitely more as he turned out to be at least 70 years old and still lived with his 90+ year old mum! anyway I was invited up to his bedroom where he had a dirt cheap Strat copy and a ten watt practice amp.....he was utterly lousy on the guitar and after about 3 minutes dear old mum staggers in yelling at him to shut the bloody noise up....a slanging match between the two ensued.....I made my excuses and left...he rang me three times after that to see when we were going to start this band and got quite shirty when I said it wasn't going to happen...like ever. Not up to that of the OP by a long way but I still have that nagging fear whenever I answer an add for the first time
9. My mate has spent years studying this bassline, he came round and showed me a load of videos of different people playing it but I think it was this one he picked out as having the right sound because of the technique he uses....don't ask me whether it is right or not I couldn't play this bassline if there were 3 or me! https://youtu.be/o53LqAWUKBA
10. I guess a lot of us brought basses because our heroes used them on tv (not necessarily on the records though!) I was certainly influenced by Dee Dee Ramone in the bass I so wanted to own....would I buy a signature bass, probably not because it was a signature bass but in the case of the Nate Mendal Precision then yes but because it has such excellent reviews on here.
11. Although probably not a direct influence on me but without question an huge influence over every band that came after which influenced, and continues to influence, me to this day. I admit I shed a tear today.....RIP a true legend
12. Mine is probably "The Man Who Sold The World" I just love the haunting vocals at the back end of the song....same with Under Pressure....my biggest memory of Bowie was his performance at Live Aid I was proper moved!
13.
I`m like this with Stingrays, love them when others play them but they just don`t sound right when I play them. Similar with Jazzes though they are growing on me, I just want to find one that I really gel with.
Totally agree, I think I am finally free of Stingray GAS, I love the look of them but just can't get on with the sound. I also have to agree with most of the other posts, if you keep picking up other basses rather than this one...then it is time to free up some cash and some space for your next bout of GAS!
14. I have to agree with Truckstop (other than the Red Bull / KFC bit...that's my idea of Studio heaven!) Our local studio used to feel small and claustrophobic it had lots of little rooms off the main room, one year they knocked them all down and increased the roof height by going into the upper floor, made one big live room with a floor to ceiling window to the mixing room and really nice lighting, it totally transformed the ambiance of the studio, suddenly it became a nice place to want to spend your days / nights If you Google "The Lodge Studio, Northampton and have a look at the photos there is an excellent shot of the live room, I couldn't grab an image and attach it on here
15.
Not sure why its sideways ,
Simple, it's the weight of it affecting the earths gravity
16. Not being massively up on Bernard's bass style but did he play anything with that kind of sound to it? The Chic songs I know all had a very different tone to them, I thought Bernard played this kind of line with thumb playing the low strings and finger picking the higher strings hence why there is only one you tube cover of Everybody Dance where the guy gets close to that Bernard tone and that is by playing that way. My friend is a huge Bernard Edwards fan and has spent years trying to emulate his style, I have to admit when he played me the cover alongside the original is was the only one that came close I think it was JT playing the line it just fits with all the other Duran Duran song IMO
17. Excellent read, thanks for posting this
18. It's amazing how many of the above posts mention weight as a reason for gear having been disposed of! I had a late 60's precision played through a Trace Elliott Twin Valve head and a Mesa Boogie 1516E cab, really regret selling the Precision that was a stupid move, my back certainly doesn't regret the sale of the amp and cab
19. You have to name and shame the venue just so we all know to avoid it like the plague!
20. We are all just jealous, he clearly has total belief in himself as some kind of saviour of unloved guitars and basses, he does have 100% feedback, maybe they do play as well as he suggests...... just imagine the GnR comeback gig...Slash walks on stage with his MDP special and lets rip the intro to Sweet Child of Mine, they would soon be in demand then, wouldn't they?........No I am not willing to shell out a couple of hundred quid to find out Please note....tongue firmly in cheek for much of the above
21. I have way too many.... 13 basses at present, I was doing about 30 gigs a year and pretty much only used my Precision's, this year will see a lot less gigs and the usual new years resolution of culling the herd of the ungigged basses....bet that doesn't happen
22.
Quick question, can I use either of the XLR/jack inputs to take a feed from the monitor out port on my mixing desk to record a session?
If you have worded you question correctly then no, you can't use an input to take a signal out.....if you want to take a line out from the monitor send then yes that will work provided it is not a powered mixer and you are sending a powered signal out
23. Ahh those were the days when we could make merry at this "luthiers" workmanship...nice to see he is alive and well and continuing to "save" these unloved gems I picture him as the mad scientist from The Human Centipede!
24. I wish you had listed these last week I have just ordered a set from the states.....doh!
25. the other side of this is auditioning for the wrong band, I applied to join an originals rock band, I learnt all the songs they sent me, turned up to the audition...they were impressed with both my bass and amps, were impressed with how quickly I had picked up basslines to the songs....at the end of the audition we were packing up and chatting, they asked what music I liked and I asked what they liked.....they liked Guns and Roses only, I said they were alright but not my favourite band...so I headed off home I got a phone call the following evening telling me how impressed they were with my audition but unfortunately I didn't get the gig because I didn't like Guns and Roses enough.....I wouldn't have minded but they didn't sound like GnR in the slightest...and if they had I wouldn't have bothered auditioning for them. The shame was I quite liked their songs I got a call from the singer a couple of weeks later to see if I would be prepared to stand in for some weekend gigs as they guy they went with worked 3 out of 4 weekends a month!
