Lfalex v1.1
Absolutely everything you can get your hands on! No, really! Considered going second-hand? There's some lovely stuff in the For Sale section, and your money'll go a LOT further...

Dubs
You might be able to find a second hand Streamer Stage I for about that, maybe very slightly more...

Excellent tones for all styles, very adaptable, lovely to play, and looks pretty too. I picked it up 3 years ago for less than £700 and would recommend it to anyone. Not a particularly 'jazz' neck, but gorgeous nevertheless. Definitely worth checking out. ps Good choice of wife too!
martthebass
That money will get you an excellent condition used: Stingray 4 Fender MIA Precision - new model (post 2008) Fender MIA Jazz (ditto) Lakland 4 string (DJ/BG/JO) If you don't like it - you'll not lose anything/much moving it on....... Used SR4 and 5's seem to be able to get for around £700 these days. It doesn't get much better at this price point, IMO. :-)

sprocketflup
Get a Warwick Thumb 4 for £600 and trouser the change. ooooh look, I just so happen to have one for sale
cameltoe
My Roadworn Precision cost £699 and it's unbelievable. And I've back-to-backed it with a 2.5k Custom shop '57. It held it's own. There was extra fretwork on the CS, worn in quite a bit, to replicate the 'genuine' '57 theme I guess, as the body and neck were both heavily relic'ed, but I guess I could take mine to a luthier to get this done if I wanted it. It may not be your cup of tea of course, but if Precision's are your thing.... Other than that, second hand Stingray!
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE
Buy from someone at Basschat. Things to consider: what style(s) music do you play. Something that will hold it's value etc.
chilievans
Well I've thought about 2nd hand and even though you get more bang for your buck there's (quoting Trent Resnar) "nothing quite like the feel of something new". So far I've narrowed it down to a few: Fender aerodyne jazz Fender highway one jazz Ibanez btb 700dx Ibanez btb 670 Ibanez srt 900dx Has anyone played any of these
Mikeg
My main bass is a btb 670. Its fantastic, very versatile and really nice to play. and i got mine for £400 second hand

You'll get a nice bass with that budget. Just to confuse you further I'd also consider the MIM Classic and Deluxe range too as they are seriously good players. I prefer them to the HWY1 (purely my tastes, others may not agree). And they will fall within your budget

I`m not big into fake relicing, but when I tried out the RW Precision it played sooooo good, probably the most comfortable bass I`ve ever played. Noisyjon
I'm another that would urge you to seriously look at 2nd hand basses. Some people keep their instruments immaculate so if you're lucky enough it can be like buying a new bass and saving a fair few bob in the process! On that note, an example: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=111569 Edited November 20, 2010 by jonthebass

stingrayPete1977
I know from your other thread you have spotted one you like but this guy has some great stuff (Stingrays to die for look away or get saving for a classic Ray or pre EB when he has them) but A few of us here at BC have a liking for this era EBMM and Im sure Nick would do you a good deal if you ring him (He makes a good coffee too, Although its a fair trek from you).It has a bit of "Mojo" so I reckon you could get a good deal from him for cash and I bet it plays and sounds real tasty and will blow a newer version away. http://imageevent.com/nicksguitars/musicmanstingray1993 http://www.nicksguitars.com/ Im almost tempted to trade my own teal 3 band EBMM for this as it has the Bridge mutes like my pre EB and the 2 band EQ yet has the 6 bolt neck and body contours that the Classic Rays and originals dont which have a slab body instead, They really are the best of all models IMO and could be worth a punt. If you look around on the bay these early 90's MM come up in good condition with some nice birdseye maple necks for a very small premium over something like my 2002 which is a bit plain in comparison. Food for thought as they say...... Edited November 20, 2010 by stingrayPete1977
pantherairsoft
Ibanez SR201ASC Ashula. Limited Edition, amazing bit of engineering. Seems odd, but give it a week and you'll realise its bloody brill. A few places have 1 left online and when they are gone they are gone. Selling at £722 when I checked last. Sound amazing. Look great. Loads of options as your playing style evolves and being they are not made now and are quite swish should hold its value well for the future.
