1. I guess we're all different in that regard. Read once that Marcus Miller would change strings a few days ahead of a recording session to get that new, crisp sound, but just broken in a little bit to take out the initial 'zing' that completely new strings can sometimes give you. He also said in that interview that Anthony Jackson was known to change his strings almost every day. Personally, I have to admit that I often leave the strings on for too long, compensating for the loss of top end on the amp or a pedal. That mosty applies to my J basses, though. On the P basses, I dig a more dull and old-school tone and in some cases the strings remain the same for years. :-)
2. Hello all. Just a quick update on the amp shootout. I have added the Eich T-1000 as it is voiced differently from the other 'T' amps from Eich. The center frequency for the bass is 70 Hz rather than 30 Hz, and the treble center frequency is centered at 5 kHz rather than 8 kHz. And to my ears at least, this does make a difference. The reason why the center frequencies are different, I guess, is that the T-1000 also has Lo-Boost and Hi-Boost push knobs that will add a bump at 30 Hz and 10 kHz respectively. These knobs are not engaged in the shootout, though. Please feel free to check out and compare al of the amps here: The BassCollect Bass Amp Shootout
3. My amp path has been as follows: Hartke HA3500 -> Gallien Krueger 2000RB -> Aguilar DB750 -> Aguilar AG500 -> Markbass F500 -> TC RH750 -> Eich T-1000. So from medium weight to about a decade of heavyweight (GK + Aguilar), but even though the sound of the DB750 was amazing, the weight just started to become an issue. From then on it has been class D lightweight amps all the way. Sure, the big amps has something special on offer as well, but I haven't really been looking back since I moved on to the light stuff.
4.
I know there are plenty to do, but I think adding In a Tecamp Puma would really be helpful as essentially it would allow people to accurately compare the EICH being the same inventor. Cheers
Yes. That would be an obvious and interesting comparison to make. Don't know if I can get my hands on one, but if I do, I will definitely add it to the shootout :-)
5.
Btw I hear the RH450 sounds way darker than the RH750 and therefore don't have exactly the same preamp. Slightly overdriven sound clips would be a welcome addition too!
Dang! that's right. Now that you mention it, I should definitely have remembered that. Will change accordigly. Thanks for notifying and letting me know :-)
6. Since I now have access to a lot of different bass amps (and at the same time), I figured a bass comparison test might be fun. For starters, I have included the following amps: - Trickfish Bullhead 1K - Eich T-900 (also covers T-500 and T-300) - Aguilar Tone Hammer 500 (also covers TH350) - TC Electronic RH750 (also covers RH450) Only the preamp section and DI out is on test, but the shootout has been created so more amps can easily be added along the way - and that is the plan at some point :-) Well, drop by and listen if you're curious to hear how these bass heads actually compare: The BassCollect Bass Amp Shootout
7. Alright. If you can take out the 12 quid for postage, I'll pick it up in London next week for £62. PM me if interested.
8. Nice one! I got it's 5-string brother... ;-) http://mybass.dk/_/look/Sider/MY_Basses.html#56 Good luck with the sale!
9. Damn... I miss that bass! You won't find a sweeter J-Update than this one. Trust me! :-)
10. I have kind of an ambivalent feeling about Sadowsky. Having owned 3 (1 NYC, 1 Metro and 1 Tokyo) and played several others (not just in stores, but also at gigs), I was never truly happy with the sound I got. They are great playing basses, though, and I must admit that the P/J4 Metro I had sounded pretty damn good. I needed a 5 though, so I bought one from a local store (a Metro P/J 5 rosewood), and it sounded very nice, but not as good as the 4-string I used to have. Now, I have no preference towards active/passive, ash/alder, maple/rosewood, 34"/35". I used to at some point, but having owned a lot of basses, I have found that there is no pattern to be found in the ones that I have decided to keep and play. But as for the 'on stroids' thing. The Celinder Update I used to own was beating any sadowsky I have ever played by far. But hey.. all of the above is just IMO, of course. Many love Sadowsky and they ae great basses - they are just not for me. Cheers!
11. I know this is very conservative, but I just love my 79 P to death...! One thing though, mine has an A-neck and that makes all the difference when you grew up playing a Jazz bass :-)
12. ...this really makes me miss my old Celinder I sold earlier this year (and never should have!). Bump for a great bass
13. Go for it! It's a fair pice, and JV's are brilliant instruments. I have owned 6 different JV/SQ instruments and I'd say that you' d have to get a 70's MIA Fender to get a better instrument - and many of those were dogs, so you might even have to go through a handful to find one that really outplays a JV... IMO, no 80's, 90's or 00's MIA will outperform a JV. You may find one of similar quality, sound and feel (if you're lucky), but not a better one. Again, IMO.
14. Hm... there are 1790 topics in the feedback section. Typically, you start ONE thread and let people rely to that thread with feedback... There are almost 7800 replies! OK, not all of them may be related to specific sales, but there can be absolutely no doubt that many, many people have bought/sold gear (including basses) on this site! I have bought/sold around 5 basses over the last year or so...
15. Hi, I have a very nice - and original - maple neck for a Lakland 55-02 up for grab. It's from a MIK bass, so it must be a few years old, but I don't know the exact year it was built. However, I do know that it's straight as an arrow and that the frets are in a good condition (plenty of life left!). So, if you should happen to have a 55-02 body or one with a rosewood neck, and you'd like to try that extra snap a maple will give you, this is for you :-) I am not 100% sure, but I think 5-string Joe Osborne and maybe even Daryl Jones basses have the same neck pocket as the 55-02, so they may be interchangeable? Anyway, I was told that the necks are the most expensive parts of a Lakland bass, and I see them going for approximately £800 used. On the other hand, I am aware that it's going to be harder to find someone who needs just the neck, so I'll let this one go for €400 (around £340 by today's exchange rate). PICS!
16. Phew... I'm glad I just got my 66 J. Otherwise, this would have been a hard one to resist! :-) Have a free bump, and good luck with the sale! Cheers!
17. I just bought a great Fender Jazz from Geert. Very smooth transaction and a good experience all the way through! Geert is very trustworthy, and I can only recommend him :-)
18.
you mean, apart from a second hand Stingray?
+1. Used SR4 and 5's seem to be able to get for around £700 these days. It doesn't get much better at this price point, IMO. :-)
19.
However, it is a bit snide mentioning CBS in the description of the bass, when it is the one thing Fender buyers will look out for. Some may not realise the connection between pre and post CBS.
True, but if one doesn't know the difference between pre-CBS and CBS, he/she shouldn't buy basses from those periods :-) (And if it were in fact a pre-CBS, it would have been the bargain of the year! ;-)
20. No, I wouldn't touch that... You are probably correct about the non-block fretboard and the pickup spacing is not 74. Also, the knobs look like late 70's replacements and there is also something funny about the decal too. The 'JAZZ BASS' seems to be placed wrong and the little 'contoured body logo' is definitely not placed correctly for a 74. Don't go there unless you can get to try it, and if it's a great sounding and playing bass, try to get a considersble discount as it's not a 74 as advertised (it might still be a great player :-).
21. If only it had been one of the 51 RI Telecasters, I'd be all over this...! Good luck with the sale. :-)
22. Yeah, I buy and sell a lot of basses in my quest for finding the perfect basses (for me). I have sent/received more than 30 basses over the last 2 years, and as long as you put it in a hard case (pack it up inside with bubble wrap) and put the hard case inside a solid card board box, there is virtually no risk. I have never had any shipping problems of any kind! Definitely offer postage if you want to sell.
