2. Nice bass... The strings in the pic are 50-105 - that's what it's set up for currently?
  3. Does it have a matching headstock? (more pics please ;-)
  4.
I suspect the type of circuit has an equal (in not greater) impact. Unless someone changes the circuit to a SR5 and to an A/B comparison I don't think will never know.
I think you are right about that. At times, I have been tempted to do exactly that as the 'old' preamp is a tiny bit louder in the serial position (closest to the neck) than in the single coil or parallel positions. The 'new' one compensates for that deifference. However, I play in serial 99% of the time, and I just didn't dare tamper with the electronics as it sounds so damn good the way it is now - I just don't want to mess anything up :-)
  5. First of all, thanks for a great review. Well done. However, I am curious to know what SR5 you used for the review - alnico or ceramic? Based on your description (phantom coil), it's a 1992-2008 model with a ceramic pickup. I have owend 5 of those basses and liked them all, but ended up selling them again. Eventually, I found a '92 SR5 with Alnico pickup and the 'old' preamp, and that made all the difference - IMHO it's a 100% better bass than any of the 5 ceramic SR5's I have owned. Oh, but my abslute favourite SR is my 78 pre-EB. I have never tried one of the new classics, though. Would love to try one out soon ;-)
  6.
very easy to deal with , fast delivery and smooth transaction thanks kim
Thanks Chris :-) And right back at ya! A pleasure doing business with you, too, and I am sure my beloved Celinder J-Update has found a loving, new home! ;-)
  7. Hm... no bass is worth$25k. I have never owned a Fodera, but I have played a few. They were great, and sounded fantastic - but not like $25k fantastic ;-) (FWIW, I support the theory that these mad prices are a way for Fodera to decrease incoming orders...)
  8.
Danish bump - like Danish bacon only less tasty! PS, BoomBass I stumbled across a big music shop in the centre of Copenhagen (Aage? Near the Round Tower). Lovely selection of Fenders (includinga Pino Precision), Sanbergs etc. Of course I only bought some strings!
Yeah, I know Aage. Also a great store :-)
Did you see any Celinders there Mr. C?
Oh, I remember back when Celinder had his own 'store' - or maybe more like a public showroom in Copenhagen. Man, I spent an entire afternoon in there the first time I was there. Thumping and banging on those great Updates... I miss my Celinder Update... :-(
  9.
Unfortunately I won't have time for fun tomorrow. On Friday, however, I am in Copenhagen and have an hour or two kill in the afternoon before flight back to Blighty. So if anyone happens to know any cool bass shops in Copenhagen ...
Try Woodstock Guitars (Borgergade 14). It's a relatively new store in Copenhagen, but they have one in Århus (2nd largest city in DK) which is quite nice :-) They should also have some vintage stuff.

    SOLD

Usually, I don't like relics, but I love natural wear. This one, however, has the nicest relic, I have ever seen. It actually looks pretty natural and it's subtle - not over the top trashed... Very nice looking bass! :-) Have a free bump and good luck with the sales!
  11. Hey, I just bought a Squier SQ P-bass form Paddy. By accident, I transferred the agreed amount of money twice via PayPal, but Paddy sent me a full refund within the hour! Excellent chap to deal with :-) Highly recommended!
  12.
I love Precisions for the same reason that Jeremy Clarkson loves Alfas, not despite their limitations, but because of them. If I had £1500 to spend in the current economic climate, in which a lot of people are being forced to offload vintage gear at low prices, I'd be looking out for a mid-late 70s Fender. They're not versatile, they're not sophisticated, they're not clever, but generally speaking, even the bad ones, and we're talking heavy, poorly finished (big enough gap at pocket to store your fags in), PUPs/bridge off-line etc., still have THAT tone C
+1... Big time! That's the way to go if you have 1500 to spend. I have owned plenty of 70's P's and they were all great. Different but great! One thing, though. I noticed that you play J basses, so you may want to look for a P with an 'A' neck (jazz width at the nut)...
  13. There is nothing quite like a good P! I have also avoided P's for years and years. Then I bought one just for the fun of it, and what an eye-opening experience that was?!!! I never had a better sound, and almost instantly my search for the perfect boutique Jazz-on-steroids was replaced for my search for the perfect P Apparently, GAS never disappears - it is just being replaced by a different kind fo GAS!
  14.
That really works for me. What can I rob..?
Please, don't do anything stupid (And I won't take kidneys or other transplants as payment for this one ) An old Fender Jazz might do it - otherwise, cash is king! :-)
  15. Hey all, thanks for your inputs. :-) I found a set on ebay.co.uk. Look forward to trying them on my fretless!
  16. Hi, I have had a hard time finding a set of flatwounds for my 5-string in DK. I need a 0.45-130 set. Does any of you guys have an idea if there is a good online store in the UK (or anywhere else within the EU) that has such strings and is capable of shipping overseas? Thanks :-)
  17.
I'm commenting on my opinion thats all. I expected better, I can conclude that on quality of construction (not tone, or feel) that it is not good enough, thats what I meant about an "off-day". I don't expect tone or feel to be universal.
Oh, sorry, mate. I think I misunderstood you, then. Didn't mean to be rude, BTW. I hope you didn't take it that way
  18.
I was kindly loaned a very expensive AC to trial and I've decided I won't be buying it, it doesn't meet my expectations. It's a shame because although it's certainly a very nice bass it's just not good enough for the price. $ for $ my used but immaculate Sadowsky NYC is better. It is "slightly" better than my Pino, but that cost less than half the AC and difference is only that the neck profile is a tiny bit nicer on the AC. That's not the conclusion I wanted to come to, but thats how it worked out. I guess even Jimmy has off days.
I wouldn't necessarily conclude that you have tried an 'off-day' bass. Different players like different basses. Personally, I have had just about all the high-end 'jazz-on-steroids' you could think of: AC, Celinder, Sadowsky (NYC, Tokyo, Metro), Atelier Z, Fender Marcus Miller V, etc. In my book, both AC and Celinder outperforms any Sadowsky or Atelier Z I have ever tried. But that is just MY opinion - not the truth
  19. I did fine with just two basses for about 10 years. Well, in fact I only used one (a Celinder J-Update 5), but I just couldn't sell off my MIJ Fender Jazz 75 RI as it was my first 'real' bass. However, the GAS hit me eventually, and I don't find it likely that it will ever disappear... Now, it's an extreme attack of Vintage GAS (hence the AC that's for sale right now).
  20.
Three AC's for sale makes you wonder
Yeah, and 3 Celinders, a bunch of Foderas, Sadowskys (NYC and Metro), Wals, Alembics (here and on TB and ebay), and a hell of a lot of Fender and Music Man basses...
  21.
Seriously nice looking bass you have there Boom You don't often see AC's with this very '70's spec, especially in this colour combination & with blocks, & to find a 5 stringer over here in Europe is even rarer!
Yeah, I know. And that finish and guard combo is SO right for this particular bass. :-) It sounds just as great as it looks - VERY 'Marcus'!
  22.
On topic, though, that looks a superb piece of equipment and a slapperś delight, BoomBass. ACś are really something special. Good luck with your sale
Thanks, mate. And yes, they are indeed something special!
  23.
That bass is called Mary?
Nah, I have never had the habit of naming my basses ;-)
