1. Stick a heavier gauge set of strings on it?
2. Pretty sure the East preamps have a trim pot, but on mine, still doesn't go as low gain as passive (U-Retro).
3. If both channels have stopped working, then I'd suggest either the cable or plug has suffered trauma. It's unlikely both sides would have stopped working simultaneously. Do the Beyers have a removable cable?
4.
Bizarrely, I always thought that Keane were actually quite good (for public school-boys).
Ha! On a forum I used to frequent, Keane, Coldplay and all that ilk, were referred to as "bedwetter core". I'm glad you reminded me of that, such a brilliant description!
5. I think a neo cab is less likely to take damage from a drop as the magnet mass is lower, so the shear forces between the magnet and basket should be less.
6. Last night on a multi band bill, I was admiring one of the other bassists Lakland 5er, and talking about the half rounds it was wearing, and he practically insisted I try it. He was a lovely chap. Ryan, from Smiley and the Underclass.
7.
I had one of these. Marshall lead and bass head. I'm not sure in which world it actually has 100w rating. Nasty transistor fuzz for guitars, and entirely lacking in bottom end for bass. Heavy too.
I've a 30W combo the same sort of vintage as that - too big for a practice amp (2x12!) and too quiet for rehearsing with anything bigger than a descant recorder trio. The only upside is it has 12" Greenbacks which theoretically should be worth a few bob, but no-one seem to want to buy them
8. At the Wheatsheaf, Oxford http://www.smileyandtheunderclass.com/music/ http://www.ukidband.com/ We are supporting these chaps this Friday. UK:ID are a good band, looking forward to seeing more of their set this time. Some of our music is here: https://soundcloud.com/the-new-moon I think we are on at 20.00
9. Maybe starting off playing the violin set it in motion as they don't seem to do left-handed ones.
10. I don't know how you right handed folks play the bass like that( as lefty playing right handed)
11. Was Harley Benton a person, or people, or just a made-up name?
12. Yes,I think so. Looks similar to the Hohner Steinberger ones. If it is still very stiff to turn, it is worth fully unscrewing that tuner and lubricating the thread with grease. Actually, it's well worth doing that with all the tuner threads anyway. Not sure if yours is just the same as the Hohner in construction, but the body of the tuner is aluminium, and softer than the steel screw, so wears out more readily. I've fixed several by using a stainless steel thread insert (called a Helicoil). Doesn't take long to do, but you do need a kit, or know someone who has access to one
13. Well it looks like a choke, part of the crossover, though the photos don't really show any wires that were once soldered. If it's the bit that rolls the treble off the woofer, the lack of it may not be all that apparent.
14. You're most welcome. It's a good feeling to get to the bottom of the problem and not just give it a whack and hope it's going to be ok.
15. Ha! The injection was in to the tendon on the palm side where the finger meets the palm. The tendon has a thickening at that point, and catches on the retaining hoop the tendon passes through. This causes the finger to lock (called trigger finger) and gets to the point that the flexors can't straighten the finger unassisted. The Cortizone in the injection eventually shrinks the nodule on the tendon. It was 18 months since I last had it done...
16. Right in at the end. slow and mellow. I guess I'm feeling sorry for myself as I've had an injection into my little finger today (and it bloody hurt!) it is feeling better now though, thanks for asking Anyhow, here it is: https://soundcloud.com/julian-moss-511168525/sept-noodle
17. Have you considered the finish of the fingerboard? A harder coating than the bare wood will make whichever strings you use sound more zingy and bright.
18. Yes, this is quite a common thing with capacitors. Being larger components, there is more mass to resonate, and usually being supported by the soldered joints alone, are prone to annular fractures around the legs. This can cause crackles as well as hum as the capacitor connects and disconnects. These large components are often supported using hot glue, but I find the adhesion to circuit boards fails with time. When reworking these components, I prefer to use silicone rubber sealant, then reflow the solder joints.
19. Looks like a Scott Whitely shortcake.
20. Bob Palt's (and previously 4000's) Sei Flamboyant headless. My Mrs. actually encouraged me to buy it when I was at Bob's place buying something else... I've never spent anything approaching that on any music gear.
21. Just back from holiday, don't know if I'll have time to defend my title this month If I do it will probably be fretless, as main bass is still in bass hospital having keyhole surgery. Was hoping it would be finished, but it hasn't even been started yet
22. Acetone is one of the most aggressive solvents for plastics you can readily access. There are some plastics it won't touch ( polyethylene, polypropylene for example) There may be some foams it is ok with, I don't have so much experience there, but because a foam has a large surface area, if it is affected, it will be a lot, and quickly! I really wouldn't do it, but if you try it, do it somewhere very inconspicuous, as always with an untried process.
23. Worth mentioning that these don't have a fan so are silent for acoustic or recording purposes. This sort of thing seems to matter to some folks.
24. you could also wire 4 16ohm speakers in parallel to present a 4ohm load to the amp, if that helps with speaker selection.
25.
I noticed this exact same problem with mine last week. Had mine for 5 or 6 years now - looks like they're all self-destructing at the same time! Was wondering if I can remove the mucky residue with acetone or white spirit but I think I'll drop an email to Strings & Things first.
I would definitely not use acetone on anything foamy.
