1. I wouldn't have thought you need to use a magnet on the pole piece, I think a piece of steel or iron (something magnetisable) would do the same job without risking demagnetising the pickup itself.
2. Looks like something ol' WaynePunkDude used to have! Pretty cool!
3. Shakespeare?
4. Interesting picture. I wonder why the casing is quite so deep.
5. Just posted a pair of pickups to Tom, paid up quickly, nice straightforward deal. Recommended!
6.
I know what you mean. It mostly depends on what work you want to do. If you want to include teaching in your portfolio of skills, then you invariably need a degree. I've been asked for sight of mine just to register with private tutor agencies. Teaching through your local authority music service will certainly require a degree.
I have a friend who teaches guitar at (I think) 2 schools, who can't read music. I was surprised, to say the least. I didn't rate his playing all that highly either...
7.
That link doesn't work now. But the problem is visible on the pics. There definitely have been issues with plug / socket compatability across manufacturers. Sometimes it's been an imperial/metric tolerance issue. You might get somewhere by cutting back the black plastic 'collar' of the socket so the tip reaches the contact ?
As far as I can see from the pictures ^ this looks like a good suggestion.
8. Sounds like a plan! You can get P90s in a humbucker-size casing, which would save one bit of work at least, of how about a Duncan P-rails in the bridge, best of both worlds?
9. I would like to have seen a straight pull micrometer style tuning system.
10. A bit of extra flux usually helps too. It de-oxidises the pot surface and makes the solder flow/wet better, as long as you get sufficient heat into the pot casing.
11. Could it be the old send-return loop disconnect problem. If the loop is never used, sockets can get a bit oxidised and disconnect the return signal from the preamp, so the quiet hiss you hear from the tweeter is just the quiescent noise from the power stage with no input attached.
12. I find the U-retro in my Sei to be very hot. The internal pickup trim pots don't bring the active level down to that of the passive pickups. It's not that the passive sound is weak or low output, it is similar to my other passive basses, it is just that the active is hot, and even with all the tone pots set to detent positions, there is a bit of a baked-in eq curve.
13. I think I've seen cream concentric ones on some Danelectro basses. It might have been a dream though!
14. Might be worth dropping the speaker right out ans checking that the voice coil wires or internal speaker wire aren't just rubbing on the cone. You can get speakers re-centred or completely re-coned, but it would probably approach the cost of a replacement anyway. Worth knowing that it is an option for older or unavailable speakers.
15. I'd go for stainless steel ones too, if you can readily find them. I've got a bag of them, but metric m3 ones.
16. It's a really simple circuit. Any decent electronics bod should be able to fix this, as long as it isn't the old epoxy potted one.
17. Take the grille off and gently press the cone in. A rub is fairly apparent. Make sure you press it in evenly, and don't go mental with the pushing.
18. Was that the place that had one of the Plek systems for fretwork?
19. It's such a shame they are playing at Cheltenham town hall again, the sound in there is terrible for loud amplified music. Last year it took most of the gig to get the sound half decent. I'd rather see them in the big tent thing, but I suppose they can't cram as many people in it
20. There was a mention of the preamp in the Aria website needs a new host thread, or something like that. Post #21 for some reason m browser at work won't let me post a link http://basschat.co.uk/topic/285087-new-caretaker-wanted-for-aria-sb-website-fan-pages/page__p__3126552#entry3126552 Oh, wait a minute ^ there it is!
21. Sounds to me like it may be the ground connection on the input to the interface has gone missing. This could be a fault on the input socket itself, or on the guitar, but I imagine you tried another guitar, and got the same result?
22. 2 Humbuckers out of an early US Masters EP42 bass. Size 3 1/2" L , 1 1/2" W, 1/2" D The cases have many age related cracks, as do all the ones like this I've seen, but the hold together ok. They are low-profile, with alnico magnets, wax potted. 2 conductors plus ground wire. Both measure 5 k ohm, so not hot output, but might make for a good balance as a woofer in the neck position. 23. I've heard similar about a Cort Curbow with a synthetic fingerboard. It belonged to a luthier's wife, and he said it made an excellent hygrometer. I'd suggest a new, wooden fingerboard would be a good fix.
