Your main trouble is the nature of the electronics in a JC. The pickup is low impedance, it uses a transformer tapped at various points to make the signal up to the levels required (that's what the rotary switch is controlling) and the pots are weird values like 2.5k - you can't just stick any old pickup in there because it won't work, or at least won't work properly. Coupled with the fact that mounting pickups in a hollow body bass is a lot trickier than a solid body or even a seml-hollow bass (because you are limited to pickups which can be suspended from a pickup ring) and you will perhaps understand why you don't see a lot of JCs out there with added pickups. I'm not saying it can't be done, but you're either going to have to source a second JC pickup (good luck with that) or some other low impedance pickup, or have completely separate electronics for the second pickup from pickup to jack, or you'd have to gut the whole bass and start from scratch. To that end, Mama pickups in Italy make a drop in replacement pickup for the JC, a traditional high impedance pickup which could be a starting point for a complete, ground up rewiring and at least mean you don't have to worry about finding something to fit the existing hole. Good luck whatever you decide to do, but for most people, changing the bridge or tuners on a JC is as brave as they're willing to go.

I restrung the Squier P bass last night. I replaced the Fender flats with some Ernie Ball Super Slinky rounds. There is a change in tension, not huge but noticeable. I've always used D'Addario in the past, but I really like these EBs. For rounds you don't seem to get a lot of finger noise and they feel quite smooth for. For what I'm doing now, I think I'll stick with rounds.

Thanks for posting this. It's making me consider swapping the stock Fender noise cancelling pickups for single coils as I like the rawness and less compressed sound.

Nice one. I should've got in there with the original Bass Direct prices, their prices have now gone up to £2,050.

As far as I remember, the neck was part of the centre block of rock maple, and then set into the walnut tone block. Rob called them "thru-necks" (see brochure scan above.) It's the same construction method as the graphite necked Empathy of the same time period, and latterly the S-2 Classic evolution. of the original Series-II.

I didn't want to copy Ian Martin Allison but this just sounds pretty amazing. I got my Capo yesterday and I haven't done much testing, but every time I wanted to take out a pedal to save space, it sounded better with it. - Today

Rickenbacker 4003 with the Ian Martin Allison Polished La Bellas https://www.labella.com/product/asp-45103-ian-martin-allison-signature-strings-4-string-set/ They're just like old worn in rounds I do like them but I’m definitely more of a flats player, so I guess I’ll have to film all of these again when I switch back 😅

Welcome from across the country in Lincolnshire! It would be interesting to hear how you're served by music shops where you are - it's always a massive advantage to try before you buy - especially with amps.

Basses you hardly ever see for sale
Cornwall Steve replied to BaggyMan's topic in General Discussion
I'm trying to get my hands on a Yamaha BB425X or 1025X but they seem as rare as a five legged horse, though there is the occasional overpriced one often in some remote corner of the country 'collection only', or from overseas with shipping costs half the price of the bass! 😂 Rigby Music in Stockport are advertising a red BB424X for £350 if anyone is interested however whether it's still for sale I couldn't say (what is it with music shops and dealers who persist in advertising guitar stock they sold six months ago ?🤔)interested Cheers, Steve -
