Year started playing: 1978

Year started playing:

1973 was when I start playing guitar. I played occasional bass when I could borrow one from a school friend from 1977 onwards and finally bought my own bass in 1981.

Ā

Number of basses:

Currently 4 (two 5-strings and two Bass VIs). Has been considerably more in the past.

Ā

Music theory:

No idea. I know what all the symbols mean but can't decipher them anywhere near fast enough to be able to sight read. I also know enough to realise that it's only theory and that practice may reveal different results especially with more modern instruments. IMO if I think it sounds good then it works and is good.

Ā

Technique:

Again no idea. Probably not a lot. I play well enough to be able to perform the music I write and have been competent enough to be able to bluff my way through a standard set of dad rock cover 10 years ago.

Ā

Groove:

Entirely subjective, and probably an old-school way of looking at micro-timing that doesn't really take into account how popular music has developed in the last 50 years. My micro-timing is perfectly suitable for the music I choose to play.

How is that going to fit onto a card?

I’m not sure on the last three, I usually make a band sound better when I join than they did before but to be honest I don’t really play/do that much so I couldn’t grade myself.Ā

Year started playing: 1978Ā

Number of basses: 1 ( PBass )Ā

Music theory: 5

Technique: 5

Groove 7

Personally I put more emphasis in fitting my sound to the band / song and less theory and scales etcĀ

Ā

I think listening is as important as playing IE when not to play !Ā

For the theory, technique and groove I’ve used Marcus Miller as a yardstick (assuming he is 10 for each which he is)

Year Started Playing:Ā  1979 - I learned the riff from Black DogĀ  - that was probably a bit ambitious for a total beginner - managed it though.

Ā

Number of basses:Ā  5 electric, 1 acousticĀ

Ā

Music theory:Ā 3?Ā  Ā I can't read dots (a stave ?) - I know if I'm playing in a major or minor key...I know what a pentatonic scale is. I struggle with remembering the intervals associated with modes

Ā

Technique:Ā  2?Ā  Ā I can only play with my fingers but I think I manage OK with that, muting with both handsĀ  - I used to use a pick some of the time but not anymore - I have nerve damage in my neck and right arm and hand which severely limits the grip strength in my right hand - I can no longer hold onto a plectrum for more than a few seconds. I have never been able (nor wanted) to slap.

Ā

Groove:Ā  3Ā  Ā - I don't think groove is particularly relevant to the music I play. Yes I can keep time and get tight with the musicians around me but to groove needs some swing, doesn't it?Ā  My drummer doesn't groove at all, never gets funky. I suspect with a different drummer I might groove more but it's not really our style. I can lock in with him though but I wouldn't call it grooving.

Ā

Ā

I suffer from imposter syndrome big time.

trechmiqure: not mcuh more than 7Ā

groove: say 8, timekeeping is my thingĀ

Music theory: Grade 6

Technique: Good enough for David Gilmour

Groove: As above.

I wouldn't really know the answer to the last two (as a number). For the music I play, the answer would seem to be 10 for each but I doubt the guys in the Mavanishu Orchestra would agree!
