Rush.

Just wondering if there's any room here for a considered, learned alternative view?  There's no doubting their enormous original talent ,superb writing and musicianship but Ive always found Pearts drum work akin to nails on a blackboard. In essence Ive never warmed to them even tho I grew up with them and my best friend back then was/is still probably the greatest Lifeson impersonator on YT. In fact I think he was the first guitarist to launch a Rush playalong channel so to speak. But anyway, Pearts drumming.? I just cannot warm to it.

I can take it or leave it to be honest. I've never liked Geddy Lee's vocals.  I appreciate the musical competence, but it doesn't move me. It lacks that *magic* for me. 

 

I've probably broken several laws as both a drummer and bassist.

Its funny how we all differ in opinions but Geddy's vocals was one of the reasons i liked them. For me it blended well with the music and was different from the average singer.

His voice has always been a bit of a "marmite" thing even back in 76 when i first heard them the vocals were a discussion point on radio shows and magazine.

I remember first hearing Rush on the very first 'Kerrang the Album' whenever that came out. My opinion hasn't changed despite multiple attempts to overlook it. I do admit that vocals and (for some reason) snare drum sound can be a make or break thing for me. 🤔

Snare drum sound is a new one on me.

You do realise that now you've put that in my head i'll be listening to snare drums from here on in.

It's my 'tism. My brain latches onto the strangest  things (so other people tell me). 

The snare drum sound on Slipknot 'Iowa' pushed me so far into black metal, you wouldn't believe it haha. 

And yes, I get the irony of that, but I'm still a production snob. 😉

The video is heartwarming. She’s an amazing drummer. Keys player is a good shout.

 

BUT

 

Ged’n’Al were already struggling to pull it off 10 years ago.

 

I’d rather they got guest vox in, and called it an evening with Ged’n’Al.

 

Mind, if they come to the UK, I’m there.

When they said getting other people in, I did hope that they would get a guest singer too. I didn't bother with the last tour as clearly he couldn't sing most of the earlier stuff, so I doubt it has changed much.

Many years ago, I was invited to be part of a touring band and Annika was lined up as drummer. Sadly some politics got involved and it never happened, but that would have been an experience to tick off the bucket list. Such a great player, I love her vibes, a really 'compositional' player like working with Gavin Harrison.

Well - I suppose that's exactly what I hoped they wouldn't do.

 

I always hoped that if Lee & Lifeson did get together again, it'd be for new music, collaborating with other musicians, and not under the Rush name. They'd previously seemed resistant to doing precisely what it looks like they are doing - maybe there's only so long it's possible to hold out against bigger & bigger dollar-carrots being waved at you, I dunno.

 

I'm glad they're using a relatively unknown drummer, rather than one of the 'usual suspects' list of prog drummers that get waved around as potential Peart substitutes. I hope they learn to pronounce her name, though.

I don't think they're doing it for the money. Unless they have made some really, really, bad investment decisions they don't need it.

 

I think they're doing it because they're bored, they've missed the buzz of playing live, they like their songs, and they can. No doubt they will be good fun gigs if you take them for what they are.

I think Paul McCartney pushed the 'go' button for them at the Taylor Hawkins shows. I thought they'd go with Mike Pourtnoy! But it's not! And they're getting a keyboard player!

I think that it is easy for folk to be critical from a distance but I think it is important to acknowledge that nearly all of us love what we do and dread the day that we will have put it down. If you love music and love making music, why the hell would you not carry on until you drop?

 

I love the idea that they picked a female drummer in these days of toxic masculinity and mysogyny. I also think that, as great as NP was (and I loved his energy), there are better drummers out there by the truckload and I never thought he was irreplaceable (lyrics aside). And keyboards opens up a lot of potential for the tracks they historically struggled to perform live.

 

I say good luck to all of them. There is no downside to the idea.

Hmmm - not sure about this, but it might grow on me. 
Neil Peart was the perfect drummer for Rush, who were the perfect band for his playing; I don’t care whether he was the best in the world or not: that’s a complete irrelevance. 
Effectively they’re doing a tribute to Rush, which is pretty much what they said. 
It could well be fun!

Alex Lifeson is looking old and I thought he had arthritis, so we’ll see how that goes.

But anyway, blah blah blah…
