Books about Music?

Recommended Posts

I work in an educational institution which has a library budget. If we do not spend that budget it will be made smaller next year. We have not spent the budget. Could anyone suggest any good things to get? I am not specifically looking for bass books. General music books, good stuff about songrwriting and other aspects of the industry, biographies, sleeve art (not tattoos!) books. Anything really.

TIA.

Christopher small - music of the common tongue

Jace Clayton - Uproot: Travels in 21st-Century Music and Digital Culture

Barry Lesser and linda Ruth salter - Spaces Speak, Are You Listening?: Experiencing Aural Architecture

All world-view changing in their own way.

+1 on the mingus biography. Very instructive for life.

Also

Michael Veal - Dub: Soundscapes and Shattered Songs in Jamaican Reggae

And

Lloyd Bradley - bass culture

Musician biographies I have enjoyed:

Johnny Cash's autobiography

Hendrix - Setting The Record Straight

I have a book at home that goes into some detail about the Beatles and their recordings, but I can't find it online right now, will check back later.

Ariane Cap - Music Theory for the Bass Player, and Ed Friedland - Building Walking Bass Lines are both really good books.

I have a bunch of good books, the problem is I don't work through them! 🙈
