A recital of piano music by Anthony Burgess, played on Anthony Burgess’s piano at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation. A musicologist sat next to us warned us to expect ‘second-rate Walton’ and I think he was being harsh, but Burgess definitely a great writer who could also compose rather than (as he apparently wished to be) a great composer who could also write.

Pleased to report I didn’t viddy any ultraviolence and also slooshied no Ludwig Van, although there was some Ravel in between the Burgess.

Vapors of Morphine in Coventry last night. I didn’t get the chance to see Morphine back in the 90s, and I’ll take this as the nearest to it I’ll get. Great intimate gig in a record shop, with someone live painting it! Excellent stuff!

Ward Thomas last night at the Del La Warr Pavilion Bexhill. Just the two of them plus a guy playing electric guitar. Great harmonies but a very boring show. Had I been on my own I would have left before the end in case I fell asleep. The support act Kezia Gill however was excellent.

Colin Hay at Union Chapel Islington.

Popped into Hope and Anchor pub before the gig which for anyone who doesn't know is just a short walk from the chapel. I'd not been in there or to Union Chapel before and both were well worth the visit.

Book pre show meal which also allowed entrance to the venue 30 minutes before the official opening time. I'd recommend this if available as we got to pick our seats before the rush and the pre show meal ticket is free with no obligation to buy a meal.

Support from Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket) who I'd never heard of was excellent.

Overheard a conversation behind me "Colin supported us for 39 shows and we came out and watched his whole set every night"

Colin Hay arrives on stage, I've been a big MAW fan but was the first time I'd seen him live.......he was just superb.

Back to Hope and Anchor for a beer and a little internet search revealed matey behind me was Ed Robertson (Barenaked Ladies)...he's got good taste.

Unexpectedly saw The Australian Pink.Floyd Show last night when a chum offered me his wife's ticket as she got herself double booked.

Have to say that they put on a cracking show,  including the whole of Wish You Were Here - which is my fave Floyd album.

The Taylor Eigsti group (Jonathan Maron on bass) at Cadogan Hall :) Jonathan is one of my favourite people and an incredible bass player to boot! Can't find any good footage of the new group so here's a video from their last tour!

Jazz Sabbath at Dublin's Sugar Club a couple of weeks back. Was a surprisingly potent gig - went mainly for the novelty factor but was surprised by just how good they were. Rick Wakeman's son. Adam (Ozzy and Sabbath's longtime keys player) tinkling the ivories and, more importantly, Jack Tustin (I think) on upright - oh, and a drummer. Theyve got a whole, somewhat unnecessary, schtick about being a 60s jazz band that were ripped off by sabbath and are now reclaiming their legacy. In fairness, the introductions and back stories were generally very funny and they had a good rapport with the audience. Anyway, as expected, they used the riffs and melodies of songs from the first couple of sabbath albums as heads and wandered off from there - musicianship and interplay were excellent. Much as I went more for amusements sake, it was really enjoyable musically and a couple of hours flew by. The audience were, unsurprisingly, more denim and leather than zoot suit but seemed as taken with them as I was. Had a quick chat with them after and they were an affable bunch too.
