Dunno about anybody else, but I'm choosing soundtracks because they fit the movie (even if it's music I wouldn't normally listen to). BigRedX Posted January 15, 2015 Share Posted January 15, 2015 Good to see that there's still a lot of appreciation for soundtracks that are specifically scored to fit to the film and not simply a collection of someone's favourite songs shoe-horned around the dialogue. I have to admit though I own a lot of soundtrack CDs for some very awful films that have been bought simply because they contained a track by an artist I liked that wasn't available anywhere else. Alan Price's songs from O Lucky Man Air's soundtrack to The Virgin Suicides is gorgeous - one day I'll get round to watching the film! I've got lots of compilations of various wonderful scores from the old Hammer films but regrettable few complete soundtracks. The weird metal samples on Full Metal Jacket (by Kubrick's daughter apparently) and the synth classical madness of A Clockwork Orange. Jerry Goldsmith, especially the little-known Mephisto Waltz and the tribal Planet of the Apes. Louis and Bebe Barron's Forbidden Planet (credited as Electronic Tonalities rather than music score). Herbie Hancock's Death Wish OST and Quincy Jones' The Anderson Tapes for the weird synth stuff. I'll probably think of more later, I love soundtracks. In addition, the Casino Royale soundtrack by David Arnold is very nice as he is channeling Mr Barry. Top Gun has a great collection of songs, but not what I would call a proper, bespoke soundtrack. Interestly enough, my son introduced me to a sountrack last night. It was to the movie "Almost Famous." Nancy Wilson's short composition "Cabin in the Air" has just smitten him. The artist Howard Shore with his work on Lord of the Rings (and to a lesser extent the Hobbit movies) has always moved me. That's music to pour a glass to, turn out the lights, and just listen, to make the world go away for a time. Another master at that is James Newton Howard with the soundtrack to the movie King Kong. Say what you will about the movie, his compositions were masterful -- especially "Central Park" near the end of the movie. The joy seen demonstrated by Kong in this scene, knowing full well what's coming soon after in the movie, can be gut wrenching. I met the singer when he played near my home in Finland a few years ago and he speaks no English at all!
