I'm listening to "Oil on Canvas"...reminded me what a Bass God Mick Karn was. I was going to bump the thread commemorating the anniversary of our loss (4th January) on the day but forgot. Even so it doesn't hurt to recognise the man's genius.

Here's "Cantonese Boy"

For those who aren't too familiar here's the whole "Oil On Canvas" album

I think this thread should be in general discussion
Agreed, probably just an error; if it gets moved then those who avoid OT might get to see it.

Mick Karn was one of the TRUE greats of the instrument....because he had vision, creativity and had the guts to put it out there.

Music is art, there are no rules...and Mick Karn painted richly textured tapestries of sound on the bass that most can only aspire to.

I really like his Liquid Glass album with Yoshihiro Hanno, especially the track Seafall (which has a beautiful rubbery bass line that, try as I might, I cannot replicate):

And here's another track from the album:

The one bassist who made me want to pick up a fretless. I have been spending the weekend in our dining room varnishing woodwork and have had various albums playing while working. Today has been a "bass masters" day - Jaco, Mark King, Marcus Miller and Mick Karn's "Titles" album. Just amazing. A true artist - inventive beyond belief and fearless in execution. Greatly missed and I'm sure there will never be another like him. I will be buying another fretless this year I think. ;)
