Isn't it 40 degrees plus on parts of the continent at the moment? I know which I would prefer.

I just want a break in the rain. The air show was a washout last weekend, I've got two outdoor events to go to on Saturday and oh look, surprise fvcking surprise, it's going to be hammering down. Again.

    3. TheGreek

      TheGreek

I've been caught out a couple of times when walking the dogs but at least you can get out. I can't bear it when it gets above 25 - really hot days are the same as wet ones - you can't go out!!

  2. Just made some beef jerky. Cheapy Lidl steak hammered very thin, cut into 1" wide strips, marinaded for 12hrs in a witches brew of golden syrup, soy sauce, per-peri spices and Bovril(!), and then baked on a rack in the oven for 6 hours at 75deg. Turned twice and brushed with marinade during that time. Bloody marvellous.

Second batch will be hitting the oven in the morning. This time the marinade is syrup, kecap manis and Jack Daniels.

  3. New ear cushions and headband fitted to my trusty Sennheiser HD280 pros... good for another 20 years now, I reckon! :D

Hi Rich, I have the same headphones and although the ear cushions and headband on mine are still ok I'm curious to know more regarding their replacement (for future reference). :)

      Rich

      Hi,

Here's what mine look like now. I bought both the ear cushions and the headband cover off fleaBay for not very much at all.
The cushions went on with a minimal amount of swearing -- after destroying the old ones to take them off, the new ones have to be stretched so that the retaining strip slips into a small gap round the outside. Easier done than explained, actually :D
The headband cover really is a knitted woollen thing held on with poppers... looks like something your nan might make but it's really very comfortable, especially when you're a bit short of thatch up top like I am

      Stingray5

Hehe, thanks for that. Yeah, I see what you mean about the granny-knitted headband but have to say it looks good and I can imagine they would be much more comfortable now. Good job! :)

  4. Get a real kick out of seeing my band listed alongside some big names.

  6. When your work laptop crashes and has to be rebuilt, and you subsequently find that the cloud backup system imposed on us by the IT dept hasn't actually been working. Months of data, documents, specs etc. gone. I don't know where to even start.

    1. Rich

      Rich

Managed to resurrect some stuff, thankfully. Everything I've been working on for the last 2-3 weeks has gone though. Absolutely gutted. If there's one thing I absolutely hate, it's having to do something twice through no fault of my own. The company will be buying me an external drive this afternoon, whether they want to or not.

I was just listening to the Dean Martin - "That's amore" video on @SpondonBassed post and automatically went into "when your worktop laptop crashes...." when I saw this....

  7. Spotted a really handsome P copy on my local Farcebook marketplace... nice purple finish with only a couple of minor dings, maple neck, on close viewing the action looked pretty low which was a good sign, and very cheap too... so I thought I'd get it as a possible base for modding... send a message... I missed it by 10 minutes apparently 😭

I'm just working on a parts project and I bought a purple Squier PJ body pending getting a Fender Jazz one at some point.

This one's not in the best condition, but it'll do to hold everything together whilst I'm getting the parts.

  8. When you hear your son and his fiancée debating/arguing over whether the car they just heard was a Lamborghini Huracán or Gallardo, you know he's got a keeper

Yep, they're well suited in that respect. Every xmas and birthday present they get each other is a driving experience of some sort. His one this year was a day in a Cobra. He's now totally addicted to the noise of a big-block V8.

There are far worse things to get addicted to. Can be an expensive hobby tho.

  9. When you're at the airport waiting to check in, decide to have a quick browse on Farcebook while you're waiting, and the first pic that pops up on your screen is this. The algorithms are taking the pish.

TBH this is one of the most chilling photos I have ever seen. One can only guess at the sheer unadulterated panic and terror inside that cabin.

    3. alyctes

      alyctes

Yes.  I have seen (once, and never found again - I have a professional interest) a photo of a cloudscape over an American city; with an airliner in a 90-degree bank and its lower wingtip below the silhouetted buildings.  The photographer caught the airliner by accident.  There is no way that aircraft was capable of recovering.  So, everyone in it was about to die.  It is probably from one of the crashes which exposed the existence of clear air turbulence; so maybe 1975.

  10. Today I heard Led Zep's "No Quarter" for the first time.

Try the live version from the "Song Remains the Same" soundtrack. Even duller and more morose than the studio recording. Plus the added bonus of 4 extra minutes 😂

  12. In various locations across the country, railway workers are sacrificing their family Christmas time in order to perform vital upgrades to lines and infrastructure, improving efficiency and services to freight and travelling public alight. Spare a thought for these folks, up to their elbows in ballast and wiring and paperwork, as you tuck into your festive feast. I'll certainly be raising a glass to all my hardworking colleagues.👏🏻

And just in case anyone thinks I'm being sarky, no I'm 100% serious. I've done Xmas commissionings, and it's bloody hard work.

    1. jezzaboy

      jezzaboy

One of my co workers is working boxing day doing such work. The payment? £835!

As you say Rich, he will work bloomin hard for it.

    2. Rich

      Rich

We had one-off bonus payments for working over Xmas/NY, but only if we worked a load of shifts. Not for just one. Although we did get T+50% (or 75% for night shifts) for all hours. It does pay well, but then it bloody should.

    3. LowB_FTW

      LowB_FTW

This is the first Christmas I haven't worked it for the last 8 years.

Granted, it's not up to my elbows in ballast, I support an NHS trust OOH  for IT support, by my thoughts are never very far away from people that have to give up public holidays as part of their shift rotation.

  14. Putting together a neo-prog covers project with my guitarist mate @Witters. I thought it'd be hard to find personnel but he already has keen interest from a drummer and a keys player. We're thinking Porcupine Tree, It Bites, Quantum Pig, Fish, Frost*, Steven Wilson, Hogarth-era Marillion... I'm quite excited by this.

    1. Rich

      Rich

I knew it was to good to be true. Drummer has announced that he can't rehearse the same night as everyone else, and doesn't want to do any covers but wants to do original material. None of us have ever met, never mind played together, but already he's diving straight into compositions. Surely it'd be better to do one cover to start with, to make sure we all get on and are capable? We've got to walk before we can run.

Honestly, the more we heard from him, the more red flags he raised  so we've said "yeah ok, maybe not then"..!

  15. Radio 2 really is the perfect early morning listening...

...'cos if there's one thing guaranteed to get me up and at 'em, out of bed and away from the alarm, it's Zoe fecking Ball's vacuous yakking and her incessant, relentless bloody Strictly fixation.

    SHUT. UP.

The Thursday morning quiz is the only thing I like about her show.

    3. Lozz196

      Lozz196

Thurs morning quiz is good, but I find ZB a tad overly excitable for a morning show, which is strange as I liked Chris Evans when he did the morning show and he`s no sloth in those areas. But imo Radio 2s gems are Ken Bruce & Sara Cox (and used to really enjoy the late night shows with Huey Morgan and Ana Matronic on the way home from gigs).

We watched it in our hotel room at the weekend. Knackered after a day walking around Camden. It's one of those rare movies I can watch repeatedly and never get tired of. A perfect film.

Got one of those. The dogs were both in season recently and weren't allowed off the lead. Didn't stop them having "disorganised dog fights".

I'm all right when I'm upright - getting  up and sitting down is a different matter.

    3. stewblack

I have been recovering from a lower back issue and tweaked it yesterday. You have my sympathy Rich. I couldn't roll over in bed last night and was concerned I might never move again it was so bad. Luckily my back support was within reach and I managed to get it on. This at least enabled me to move again.

  22. Follow-up to my NSBD (New Skirting Board Day), finally got some in place. Very pleased with the design. I don't do a lot of DIY so I'm quite chuffed with this.

I fitted a laminate floor in our bedroom and replaced all the skirting at the same time, rather than going the beading route. 2nd time I've done skirting. A satisfying job if your walls are square and plumb like they were on my 1st attempt, not so much when they aren't like, my 2nd attempt in a much newer house... But decent wood filler, decorators caulk and some patience with a paintbrush covers a multitude of sins!

    2. Rich

      Rich

Oh god, I feel your 2nd-attempt pain... this house doesn't have a flat wall or a 90 degree corner or a rectangular doorway in the entire place. The whole building is a Friday afternoon job. The walls are ~ and the doorways are \ / and the corners are \_ .

  23. Experimental ramp fitted to the Spector. A piece of scrap laminate floor cut to size and sprayed with about a dozen coats of rattle can black and lacquer, and then carpet-taped in place. I'll see how it goes.

First gig with the ramp last night, love it. Definitely staying, albeit in a different form... My planted thumb wore right through all those coats of lacquer and paint  some 5mm acrylic sheet is now in the post.

  24. Car insurance renewal quote just landed.

    Last year, £376.

    This year, £635.

    I don't bloody think so.

    1. LowB_FTW

      LowB_FTW

      Last year for me £270

This year £367 was the renewal quote, which I managed to get down to £336, and couldn't get anywhere else for cheaper.

      But your quote 😳

Pretty sure your current insurer doesn't want you on their books next year with that quote.

Sadly I fear you are correct. Things will never be completely the same again for live music. A few of the places that were regular gigs of ours before The Event have disappeared permanently from our calendar.
