  1. When you hear your son and his fiancée debating/arguing over whether the car they just heard was a Lamborghini Huracán or Gallardo, you know he's got a keeper

Yep, they're well suited in that respect. Every xmas and birthday present they get each other is a driving experience of some sort. His one this year was a day in a Cobra. He's now totally addicted to the noise of a big-block V8.

There are far worse things to get addicted to. Can be an expensive hobby tho.

  2. When you're at the airport waiting to check in, decide to have a quick browse on Farcebook while you're waiting, and the first pic that pops up on your screen is this. The algorithms are taking the pish.

TBH this is one of the most chilling photos I have ever seen. One can only guess at the sheer unadulterated panic and terror inside that cabin.

Yes.  I have seen (once, and never found again - I have a professional interest) a photo of a cloudscape over an American city; with an airliner in a 90-degree bank and its lower wingtip below the silhouetted buildings.  The photographer caught the airliner by accident.  There is no way that aircraft was capable of recovering.  So, everyone in it was about to die.  It is probably from one of the crashes which exposed the existence of clear air turbulence; so maybe 1975.

  4. In various locations across the country, railway workers are sacrificing their family Christmas time in order to perform vital upgrades to lines and infrastructure, improving efficiency and services to freight and travelling public alight. Spare a thought for these folks, up to their elbows in ballast and wiring and paperwork, as you tuck into your festive feast. I'll certainly be raising a glass to all my hardworking colleagues.👏🏻

And just in case anyone thinks I'm being sarky, no I'm 100% serious. I've done Xmas commissionings, and it's bloody hard work.

    1. jezzaboy

      jezzaboy

One of my co workers is working boxing day doing such work. The payment? £835!

As you say Rich, he will work bloomin hard for it.

    2. Rich

      Rich

We had one-off bonus payments for working over Xmas/NY, but only if we worked a load of shifts. Not for just one. Although we did get T+50% (or 75% for night shifts) for all hours. It does pay well, but then it bloody should.

    3. LowB_FTW

      LowB_FTW

This is the first Christmas I haven't worked it for the last 8 years.

Granted, it's not up to my elbows in ballast, I support an NHS trust OOH  for IT support, by my thoughts are never very far away from people that have to give up public holidays as part of their shift rotation.

  6. Putting together a neo-prog covers project with my guitarist mate @Witters. I thought it'd be hard to find personnel but he already has keen interest from a drummer and a keys player. We're thinking Porcupine Tree, It Bites, Quantum Pig, Fish, Frost*, Steven Wilson, Hogarth-era Marillion... I'm quite excited by this.

    1. Rich

      Rich

I knew it was to good to be true. Drummer has announced that he can't rehearse the same night as everyone else, and doesn't want to do any covers but wants to do original material. None of us have ever met, never mind played together, but already he's diving straight into compositions. Surely it'd be better to do one cover to start with, to make sure we all get on and are capable? We've got to walk before we can run.

  7. Radio 2 really is the perfect early morning listening...

...'cos if there's one thing guaranteed to get me up and at 'em, out of bed and away from the alarm, it's Zoe fecking Ball's vacuous yakking and her incessant, relentless bloody Strictly fixation.

The Thursday morning quiz is the only thing I like about her show.

    3. Lozz196

      Lozz196

Thurs morning quiz is good, but I find ZB a tad overly excitable for a morning show, which is strange as I liked Chris Evans when he did the morning show and he`s no sloth in those areas. But imo Radio 2s gems are Ken Bruce & Sara Cox (and used to really enjoy the late night shows with Huey Morgan and Ana Matronic on the way home from gigs).

Got one of those. The dogs were both in season recently and weren't allowed off the lead. Didn't stop them having "disorganised dog fights".

I'm all right when I'm upright - getting  up and sitting down is a different matter.

I have been recovering from a lower back issue and tweaked it yesterday. You have my sympathy Rich. I couldn't roll over in bed last night and was concerned I might never move again it was so bad. Luckily my back support was within reach and I managed to get it on. This at least enabled me to move again.

I fitted a laminate floor in our bedroom and replaced all the skirting at the same time, rather than going the beading route. 2nd time I've done skirting. A satisfying job if your walls are square and plumb like they were on my 1st attempt, not so much when they aren't like, my 2nd attempt in a much newer house... But decent wood filler, decorators caulk and some patience with a paintbrush covers a multitude of sins!

    2. Rich

      Rich

Oh god, I feel your 2nd-attempt pain... this house doesn't have a flat wall or a 90 degree corner or a rectangular doorway in the entire place. The whole building is a Friday afternoon job. The walls are ~ and the doorways are \ / and the corners are \_ .

  14. Experimental ramp fitted to the Spector. A piece of scrap laminate floor cut to size and sprayed with about a dozen coats of rattle can black and lacquer, and then carpet-taped in place. I'll see how it goes.

The dog says, "Woof woof woof, woof woof woof woof woof, woof woof."

The dog frowns and replies, "But then it wouldn't make any sense."

Remote Scottish village, general store cum post office, bell tinkles as the door opens.

'Mrs McDonald' says the postmaster 'We dinnae see you too often'.

'Aye, well, Mr McDonald died.  I'd like to put a wee notice in the paper, what's the cheapest?'

'£5, what d'ye want to say?'

      'Mr McDonald died'

'Feh £5 ye get 3 more words'

'Mr McDonald died.  Volvo for sale'

  22. Nice start to the day today. Came downstairs to find a very tired looking white-tailed bumblebee stumbling about on the hall floor. I recalled reading something about bees responding well to a bit of energy and hydration, so i mixed a tiny bit of sugar in a splash of water on the end of a teaspoon, and held it down in front of the bee. It found it and immediately started to drink, I could see its tongue lapping it up. After slurping for a couple of minutes it stopped and visibly began to revive, so I took it outside. It headed straight for some flowers and started doing what bees do, looking a lot healthier. My feelgood moment for the day. :)

Well done you. Restores my faith in humanity reading things like that. Unlike the little shyte I saw in the park. He was astride his bike with another kid watching and was bouncing his front wheel up and down on the path. As I rounded the corner, his mate remonstrated with him to which he shouted ‘I don’t care, I hate them’ and on seeing me they both scarpered. When I stopped where they had been there were pieces of earthworms squidged all over the path. His parents would be sooo proud if they knew 🤬. Not little kids either. Probably 10yrs if not more. Makes my blood boil. Well, boil more than it is already today 🥵.

On reading further, apparently feeding sugary water to exhausted bees is ok providing you only do it once and in a very small quantity. It certainly seemed to perk this fella up though.
