1.
Have sold it. Ovation Custom Legend here I come!!
I know the Ovations were state-of-the-art in the 70s, do they stand up against todays quality acoustics? I haven't noticed any being used for quite a few years. Hope you're happy with it anyhow!
2. Sounded pretty good on stage, but the guitar on the other side of the stage drowned it out somewhat (my Sessionette!). The fuzz sound through it sounded good, and was all there, but I think the amp was less than half up on the volume control. Would have liked to have heard it pushed a bit more. During the soundcheck, the sound man said it sounded great, I think he took a direct out the back of the amp.
3. Yes, a capacitor won't give you a reading on your multimeter like a resistor will. This is because a capacitor is 2 sheets of metal foil separated by a thin insulator, all rolled up into a cylinder. 1 foil sheet is connected to each leg. Did you measure across the speaker whilst you had the meter out? Should measure slightly less than the value printed on the label.
4. If they are the exposed core ones and the old ones weren't, the string itself may be slightly closer to the pickup. As suggested above, try lowering the pickup a bit. You don't say what the bass is, but my guess is it has single coil pickups. I've only ever come across this on a strat, and it mystified me for a minute. I'd been changing pickups for someone and got it set a fraction high. I've never had this on a humbucker pickup no matter how closely I've set it though, guitar or bass.
5. My band is backing up a guy tonight who will be using one of these. It sounded fine in rehearsal today in my tiny room. Will report back to see how it works at gig level, if anyone is interested. He plays a telecaster with humbuckers. Sniggering - auto-correct wanted to change humbuckers to hamburgers
6. This is tonight!. Just finished our first and only rehearsal with Anton, and it is sounding better than I could have hoped. Bring it on!
7. I do this kind of soldering at work (and much smaller!) and always use a microscope. I would recommend magnifying spectacles at least for doing fine work as it gives you confidence that you are doing a neat, clean job, even if you can actually do the job without magnification.
8. Doesn't the octaver put some of the unwanted low frequencies back in if used after the MT?
9. So he didn't get everything right first time!
10. And changed it's name to Thumb Rest
11. I think Wishbass work on the same principle as double basses. Neck is big and strong enough not to bend, and neck relief is for weeds who cant hold down a proper action.
12. Me too! I hope to put a bit more effort in next time too.
13. This is a tricky one - as what you end up with will be something you really shouldn't move on, even if you want to in the future. Only one bass will ever be that wedding gift.
14. I use an old Zoom 1608 hard disk recorder. I normally play bass along with a metronome, then try my best to play live drums along with it. Then guitar and vocals, or just layers of guitar. That said, this month's effort was just the band jamming along with an ill-defined set of chords.
15. You can still vote for the 3 you hate the least! BTW, I hardly put any work in to mine, so slag away, I really don't mind this time!
16. 10 entries and only 14 folk have voted (so far). Doesn't seem to be capturing the imagination of Basschat at large, does it? It looks like only the entrants have voted and one or two of their acquaintances.
17. Not much love for psychedelic pop then? Must put my band in the 0.05% category
18. Crimson guitars do a range of tools for all sorts of guitar tasks, as do many other companies, with the added benefit that he does a load of tutorials on youtube on how to use them. He has an easy to watch manner, and is happy to share mistakes he has made so you don't have to!
19. Charms are on at 8.15. We are also acting as backing band for Anton Barbeau, originally from Sacramento, California, a cult master of psychedelic pop. His usual U.K. band is Andy Metcalfe and Morris Windsor, of Robyn Hitchcock's bands the Soft Boys and the Egyptians, so big shoes to fill! Anton will be on about 9.30 The Wheatsheaf is just off high street, opposite the covered market.
20. Sometimes, just working them back and forth will clear the crackles, if not, Electrolube contact cleaning spray squirted in to the pot itself is the most often recommended cure. Just work the pot after spraying and they usually clear nicely.
21. To demonstrate the ability of whatever kit to produce a full frequency range, especially the high bit? You can always turn it down, but can't add it if it's not there in the first place.
22. I've never really liked the idea of metal mains switches. I'm sure it's irrational, but I prefer to be touching an insulator!
23.
I'm also confused as to what they're going for with a very feature free amp with potentially gigging power levels?
Simplicity?
24. The treble cut switch in the top diagram needs a diagonal wire from the top left pole to the bottom right pole to give 2 different flavours of treble cut. Likewise, in the bass cut switch, the link at the top should be from top left to bottom right to do the same thing for bass cut. I think I've got this right! Feel free to correct me!
