Jack , it must be nearly 20 years since you used to come to our jam night at the Grey Horse. I remember seeing you in the audience.

I had an HB 5 musicman style and thought it was excellent except that the string spacing was too narrow for me. I've had various 5 strings, a couple of Yamahas, a Cort and a Bass Collection SYG which all ended up sold. Gas will probably prompt me to get another one at some point which will probably end up being sold within a year or so

It Was 20 Years Ago Today ... Revisited
ricksterphil replied to Happy Jack's topic in General Discussion
I'm 50 years in and still lazy about practicing. I am forever promising myself I'll 'get really good' one day, but can only find the focus to put the hours in if there's a gig looming. I get the most fun from playing live and singing bv's and I also love just playing my acoustic and singing songs at open mics One day...... -

People want different things from music, bands and entertainment in general. I would imagine that many people go to your gigs to relive a part of their youth, maybe dress-up, have a few drinks and dance around the proverbial handbag. Nothing wrong with that, they're having fun and being entertained by you. But for many, it could just as well be a UB40 tribute or watching Mama Mia! Plenty of people love watching blues bands and are probably more connected to the music than they are music from their past. I'm not saying that dancing never happens, and it is always good if any band work on entertaining the audience, but you will have a different atmosphere to a glam band gig! Still people are there enjoying it, so it's still all good. With the best will in the world, I don't see your BL going onstage and knocking out Wig Wam Bam anytime soon! But that's cool - just work with the band you're in and be as good as you can within that remit. I've played all over the UK playing blues festivals and had great fun - I would jump at the chance to do something similar again!

Rechargeable batteries in active basses?

I tried some in my Sire (as it uses two) but the high frequency noise from them was intolerable. -

Can anyone help with an Ebay purchase, for an item in Neath? It's a 13-bass pedal board, and the seller is offering Buyer Collects only. Is anyone close enough to Neath to pick it up and pack and post it to me, in return for payment for your expenses, time, and trouble? Alternatively, are there couriers that could help me?

I’m looking for a book which explains setting up a bass. YouTube is ok to an extent but I’m really looking for a guide that I can consult whilst going through the process.

Are you playing French or German? I've found dealers here tend to have fairly slim pickings for German bows, though you may have more luck with French. In addition to the Violin Shop in Glasgow, both Stringers and Gordon Stevenson in Edinburgh might be worth calling to see what they have in (I'd do that before travelling). None of them keep a huge range in for bass, but they may have what you need.

Christmas presents....What did Santa bring you?
TrevorR replied to Mudpup's topic in General Discussion
Not bass related but Santa did bring me a turntable and a nice LP to play on it. Will be lovely to get my old vinyl out again and spin it through my stereo system! 🎅🏼❤️🤘 -

Laney Nexus Tube & Nexus 8x10 with Flight Case...
Sean replied to binky_bass's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Going back a while, over a year ago, I was looking to do some work on mine and googled the price of valves etc. While searching, 3 NoS ones came up being sold by Laney through eBay for £599 collected only. They sold all on the same day, I was stunned. All 3 then resurfaced on eBay from a seller in W-s-M at £749. This was 50% of what the last retail price was IIRC. Now, this was when sellers paid a fee on that listing, (nothing has changed in reality, it's just easier to remember prices from before the change) so if we do the maths, someone was prepared to "invest" £1797 up front, drive the 200 mile round trip from W-s-M to a Halesowen, put them into storage while waiting for them to sell for £2247 minus eBay fees, collection cost, etc. Really!? It's a lot of outlay, effort and messing about to pocket £200-300 if you're lucky. But it shows that there are people out there...
