Basses you regret flogging

I really regret selling my US Precision (went to marthebass so I know it will be well looked after). It was the best playing bass I've ever owned. It was just too thuddy for gigging in the 3 piece. It had to go (to fund my latest purchase) and I'm happy with what I got.

I've sold some beauties in my time (an 80's Status, Fender Jazz, Ric 4003) but the P-Bass was my fave.

Anyone know the way to the closest Foreign Legion Recruiting office?

Only two major ones...

A '73 jazz, vintage white, black guard, maple bound neck and pearly inlays, had all the ashtrays etc. and was in 9.5/10 condition. It sang like a bird and played like a dream. And I, being still very wet behind the ears and not really thinking about what sounds good ahead of what looks good, part-ex'd it for a Status Energy 5 string.

Part of the reason the Jazz got let go was because I had bought a bass by a company called Lag (who are still around making guitars, though seem to be mass produced). This was a hand-crafted job which came with nothing but a phone number for a little workshop in France somewhere. It was a jazz-ish type bass, though more modern. It had a stunning American black walnut body with Bartolini j-type p-ups and eq. Hardware was all black (with a Warwick alike bridge) and the birds-eye maple neck was capped with about a quarter of an inch of never-seen-before-or-since highly figured rosewood, all marked out with abalone inlays. As amazing as it looked, it sounded even better. Thick bottom end with sizzling everything else.

The Lag met it's demise because the Status convinced me it was all gonna be about 5 strings and, well, because I was stupid so a few months after the Jazz went, so too did the Lag, depressingly for a drum machine, a chorus pedal and a second hand four track.

Hi mate,

Do you have any pics of sound clips of the Lag bass? There is a very 80's red P bass Lag in the PMT near me, and some of my fave fusion players have played Lag basses in the past. And, of course - I like French basses ;0)

Yeah, I'd noticed that too, was a bit miffed about it as well. I thought it might go down well on eBay but figured I'd spread the love and sell it on here for what I paid for it. More fool us I suppose.

Hi Ped, I have no pics of my actual bass but I just did a search after writing my post to see if I'd find any and I actually did, sort of. Where to start!

The three that immediately spring to mind are:

Very early sunburst JV Squier - fitted with a series/parallel switch on the bell plate
Warwick Streamer Stage I - belonged to Dave Wilson (ex-Overwater and general bass wizard) who re-finished it see through red
Warwick Streamer Stage I - Late 80's model with beautiful AAAA flame Maple body but not the tacky looking flame you get now, this was really deep / 3D

The first 2 may well still be in the NE so if anyone knows of their whereabouts...

Oh and a certain Zon Sonus that still remains within the BC family!

I've only ever sold one bass - A Hagstrom Futurama that I bought as a backup for my Burns Sonic Bass, after breaking a string at an important gig and having to use the support band's horrible violin bass. Of course I never broke another string on the Burns at a gig after that, and unfortunately the Futrama wasn't half the bass from either a sound or playing perspective that the Burns was despite being in almost pristine condition (the Burns was much modified when I bought it - only the wood, frets and pickups were original). I ended up selling it for what I paid for it to the owner of the affore-mentioned violin bass for him to use as a backup and put the money towards a semi-acoustic 12 string. I wouldn't mind having it back mostly because it is the the only one I've ever sold and also because if it's still in the condition it was in when I let it go it would be worth a fair ammount money now (or at least compared with what I originally paid for it!)

There's been too many I regret selling, and I few I regret having been forced to part company with, having had them visciously stolen from me by some of the lowlife that are out there!

Sold a beautiful Tobias Classic 5 way, way back in the early 90s - it was beautiful with a purple heart & maple body. I had a beautiful BC Rich Eagle stolen which had a Bill Lawrence pick up on it that was just amazing. But the one I regret selling most was my Wal Pro with the leather scratchplate, serial JG1123, one of only 24 made!! Stupid, stupid, stupid. :)

Only consolation was that I sold it to a good friend who uses it constantly on tour in the States, so I know it's doing the job it was built for..I'll post some pictures later if anyone's interested?

All of the ones I've sold were 'starter' type cheapo basses so I don't miss them. I do wish that I still had my first fretless though. (Yamaha RBX) I suspect that with a decent pickup and bridge it'd have a better sound than my current fretless...

Only a couple do I regret selling...

I had an old Padauk topped 5 str basscollection that was a beaut, and if Only I'd swapped the electronics on it, It would have made a kickass bass.

Also sold off my Oakland Fretless... oh boy, that was THE biggest mistake EVER. I've played and heard MUCH more expensive fretlesses out there that didnt even come close to the sound of this beaut.

I sold a bolt-on 5 string Ken Smith BS something-or-other which I bought new from the Bass Centre in Wapping.
(Never knew exactly what it was as I got the wrong documentation with it)
It was under my bed for a year-ish after I bought my Lakland several years later so I let it go for about a grand.
It's since turned up in the Gallery for well over that.
Too expensive to keep for that odd Ken-Smith-sound moment but nice to have owned one all the same.
Not enough of an all-rounder for my work but would like it back all the same (just to have- but the grand came in handy!)

I had a Travis Bean 2000 series (#222).

I paid £375 for it from a shop in Lewisham during summer of 1981. A short time after I got it I passed it to a luthier near Kingston who specialised in making these beautiful baroque instruments - he fitted a BadAss bridge, took the old fingerboard off it and attached a fantastic piece of ebony and I used it fretless for a while. Later on, I joined a real rocking outfit and had it refretted by Dick Knight who lived somewhere near Ottershaw/Weybridge, Surrey.

It lost favour with me two or three years later and I part-exchanged it (yes, part-exchanged...that really hurts), for a f2cking nasty Ibanez Roadster at ABC Music in Addlestone. To add insult to injury, I destroyed the Ibanez at the end of a gig before the year was out. I was a terrible bass.

I still wonder where that Travis Bean went. Hopefully it's still about and giving someone some pleasure.
