There is just something about these Specials, isn't there?  I borderline frankly didn't like the last Stingray I played at a bass show in 2015 or so, but these just "fit" me so nicely.  I usually have to break an instrument in for a while before I gig it; I gigged my Special 4 days after taking delivery!

that's very well-put. They feel like old friends from the minute you pick them up.

Which one You prefer, standard or Special Ray and why ?

I have not been able to compare the basses side by side. The standard was long gone when I bought the Special.

The Special is 0,5 Kg lighter. Both are good basses, the Special may have an edge on all positions of the switch being good.

It’s strange. I briefly owned an SR5 Special HH and although it was beautifully made, it had pretty major neck dive and I just couldn’t get on with the tone. I’m not sure whether it was the neodymium pickups or the new EQ, but it just sounded like there were no mids, even with the mid EQ on full boost. It sounded fine acoustically and had a great B string, so it must have been the electronics. I bought a US Sterling 5 HH not long afterward and love it. Maybe I prefer the more aggressive sound of the ceramic pickups wired in series - but then again my Big Al 5 has neodymium single coils and it sounds great…

Really interesting experience.  Mines obviously a 4 but but no trace of neck dive on mine.

Is the tone difference more noticeable on the 5 then?  It's barely different on the 4 to me, the Special sounding more powerful/louder and EQ more range but otherwise just classic Stingray tone.  Certainly no lack of aggression!

I'm back in the Music Man camp, this time in a passive way. Haven't used it in anger yet but have high hopes

I’ve not long had a cutlass and I love it. Great growl, great build quality and a pleasure to play.

Yes, they are nice :) Fingers sore from playing it. Got it setup nicely for me now. I'll Try some other strings once I get tired of these Slinky's that are on it.

😂🤣 I had the same when I first got mine, it was used but from what I can see they were slinky’s on it. I’m trying out some flats for the first time, TI jazz, they still growl and do sound good, I’ll give them a few more weeks but I think it just had that bite with rounds on

That looks nice Andy, what model is it

Sabre classic “sledge” in the fancy flip flop

paint…got to admit, closed my eyes and pressed “buy” - but you only live once and I’ll be damned if I didn’t give it a go.

do fancy a cream Pearl pickguard on it.

Hmm, not good. Fingers crossed for you. Christmas has certainly come early to chez Trav in the last couple of weeks or so.
