I Smell BS

No mention that it's a real Fender but adding tags & stickers in the pictures seems designed to imply it's a Fender, a classic con banned under the sale of goods act. The bass is a dog & a half. That solid black on the forearm contour suggests it's plywood, not basswood but hard to tell given the blow torch relic job.

The bloke is a complete arse if he thinks that tone circuit is going to work at all!

After making an enquiry asking if the guitar is a fender this is the reply I got.

Hi Paul, not the body, but the neck could be, spent hours trying to verify it but no constructive evidence. In all, far superior to the Mexican road worns costing hundreds more. It's a genuine mid 70's bass that's done the circuit! Hope this helps. Thanks, Mark

Well ,there you go.

I queried whether all the burns are as a result of cigarette burns. His reply:

"That's the paint work coming away, the headstock is dirty, no fire damage here.. Are you out to criticise or buy? This is a 36 year old guitar that's been played professionally and has been further relic'd. Thanks for your interest, you're welcome to come and see it and compare it against any custom shop relic. Trust me, you'd take this one home at this price."

- prestigeguitars

Should I ask what is meant by "further relic'd"..

Filthy old piece of plywood junk that's been on fire? £450? Bargain! :)

Sometimes I really want to beat these idiots to death with the rubbish they sell.

And I can't work out if this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VINTAGE-FENDER-FULLE...2-/200575448089

...is wilful bullsh!t or just pig-ignorance. The Japanese factories must have bought several million "Fullerton Red Bottom" J pups because you find these in 90% of JapCrap Js & P/Js. I've got half a dozen of the bloody things sitting in a drawer.

Just sent this question to the seller,

"Hi

Just been looking at your pics and am a bit confused to the parts on the bass? The headstock logo is from the late 50s, silver spaghetti type and usually on the 50s reissues but the machine heads dont look like anything Ive ever seen on a Fender.

On a 75 bass I would expect to see the large font "TV" style logo with "Fender Precision Bass" written almost full length of the headstock, also the machine heads would have a large plate stamped with Fender on.

The neck plate should also be stamped with a large F too?

Do you know if these are original to the bass at all?

I'd like to bid but would like to make sure of the origins of the bits thanks.

Best wishes"

If all the BS on ebay was spread evenly over the Sahara desert, would it be enough to turn it back into a fertile plain?

What the hell is this thing with relic'd - on a new instrument I take it this means it's made to look road worn on purpose, on an old instrument surely it cannot be relic'd as such isn't damage to the paintwork or whatever just an instrument that's been badly looked after ?

As for the ad. itself - I know nothing about Fenders, but the pictures are bang out of order and totally misleading if this is not a 100% Fender as seems to be the case. I know it's "buyer beware" situation but a Fender headstock logo a massive Fender back drop in one pic. to reinforce this idea and the "comes with original Fender case" plus the "hardware is genuine" are all designed to trick the unsuspecting.

I know one thing - if I ever decide to buy a Fender I'll ask you lot if it's real first :)

Well, the listing's been pulled now - I think he might have sussed he'd been rumbled, and even tracked this discussion down.

It's anyone's guess what the parts actually were, but the body (and probably the neck) is a cheap copy of indeterminate age - plywood or butcher block at best, the black oversprays on the contours are always a giveaway, you never see these on a solid timber body. The neck has a Gibson-type nut, glued-on fretboard and I'd speculate the odd positioning of the tuners is because it's originally had small holes (for the enclosed tuners common on 70s/80s Jap & Korean low-ends) which have been ineptly enlarged. You'll notice the tuners are all spaced differently as a result.

As I said, a filthy old piece of burnt plywood junk, not worth more than £50. And if you'd like to discuss it, Mr "Prestigeguitars", that would be an interesting conversation.

If it was up to me, I could think of somewhere...

Looking forward to having it explained to me how he identifies this body as an "Ibanez" Two days ago he didn't seem to have a scooby what it was. :)

In the machine heads auction, he says it's not for sale. So expect it to turn up attached to a [s]reloused[/s] reliced Squier body sometime soon.
