Hit by the realisation that what I would like would be beyond what I could afford/justify, built it myself. Went for the "Bruce Foxton" look. Allparts type neck (was a factory second due to a mineral stain on the reverse) with 70's fender logo and 70's style necklpate (I intend to put a joke serial on this of 301306 which would be a 71 P, 13/06 being my birthdate in that year - not to mislead anyone - just because I cant afford a YOB Bass!!), Black MIM "Genuine Fender Spares" body (cavitys all shielded out with copper tape), 70's style tuners from (I believe) Steve Harris sig bass, Gotoh 201 bridge, 3 ply BWB pickguard, Fender 62 RI Pickups, and cloth wired (to match the pickups) CTS pots (500k's though I may swap them out for 250's at some point), sprague 0.1uf capacitor and Switchcraft Socket. The neck is sprayed with Amber tint Nitro - wasnt quite the light Amber I was expecting (more like an extra from "The only Way is Essex..") but it works. You don't find many new paisley basses around anymore. I love the sound, I think it has more presence than a "modern" Precision with split pickup and can get very raunchy. It was covered with stickers and accumulated gunk but I really wanted a P bass. I scrubbed it down, gave it a respray in vintage white, added some CTS pots and a well seasoned, 1970's Mighty Mite Precision neck (from the first bass I bought secondhand 30 years ago), plus a split pickup from the same bass......and we're cooking. M@23 Posted December 1, 2013 Share Posted December 1, 2013 Well, the search is over. Yesterday i picked up my new 2012 American Standard Precision and i couldn't be happier. I've owned a few basses now and this is the nicest, in every respect. Build quality, sound, looks, playability. It weighs 8lbs 10 and balances perfectly on a strap. Things only got better when i plugged into the gigging rig. As much as i loved my Jazz and Stingray, they weren't plug and play jobs, i fiddled with EQ, effects, the Markbass filters and was never 100% happy with the tone. It was just me being fussy i guess, but it wasn't [i]the[/i] tone i was looking for. There isn't a tone i don't like from the P. I can have the tone pot all the way on and it is clean and cuts through, but still warm without sharp ice pick clangyness. Or, roll the tone right off or anywhere in between and it get fat and round without losing definition or getting muddy. I'm blown away. Delighted to say it is the nicest bass i've ever played, and it's all mine! Anyway, the pics aren't great - how hard is it to take a decent picture without any natural light?! Going to get 62RI pickups and Gotoh 201 (same as the one on the left). The two bitsers are so good Im considering moving on the 62RI. Neck profile superb. I've put a pearloid scratchie on mine coz I find the 1-ply looks a bit cheap though. Funnily enough I dragged mine out at the weekend and used it at band practice for the first time for ages - and loved it.
