  1. Looking at that protest movement to open things up again, I can see where they're coming from - they've lost their jobs, their income and their healthcare (I'm aware health insurance is usually part of the employment deal in the States). In the UK the government have agreed to pay 80% of an employers wage bill, so many employees will be kept on, even if the business they're employed by has to close temporarily. Welfare has been increased to better meet the needs of newly unemployed workers, and of course health care is provided free of charge in the UK. It's sad that people in the USA have no choice but to risk their own health and their loved ones health, due to lack of government support. Saying that, there are those within our government who are in favour of lifting the lockdown, in the UK, to prevent (as they see it) our economy being damaged beyond repair.
  2. Probably going out of business.
  3. The Mex Deluxe Precision P/J is a great bass. Sounds great and has a Jazz Style neck. I tried it in Guitar Guitar and loved it but then decided to buy the USA Elite version, without getting the chance to play it first (because I assumed, being a USA made bass it would be better than the version made south of the border). The Elite is a nice bass and sounds great but it was 100% more expensive that the Mex version and it wasn't any better sounding or better made.
  4. If you have a laptop, with an integrated camera, I would recommend putting tape over it, unless you specifically wish to use it. But if you have been looking at naughty websites, then you're going to go to hell anyway, so it's probably too late for you. Mark Zukerberg obviously checks them out regularly.
  5. My 16 year old friends were starting a band. I had no real desire to be a bass player, I wanted to be the drummer but that position was taken. The position of bass player was also taken, until the guy who had decided he was to be the bass player, changed his mind and sold me his bass so he could buy a guitar. 40 years and at least 1,000 gigs later, I'm still booming away.
  6. I paid for it on Thursday. I expect it will be quite a while before I have it in my hot little hands. Last time i bought a bass from bassdirect, there was no communication from Bassdirect, or the courier, as to when it would arrive. After a week, I contacted Mark, who told me who the courier was. I ended up having to go down to the depot to collect it. The website says to expect delays.
  7. I just bought something 'bass shaped' from Bassdirect 2 days ago. I don't need it, as any gigs will probably be months from now and I have plenty of other basses to choose from when that happens. It's basically retail therapy, to cheer me up in these dark days. I suppose the silver lining of this coronavirus thing, is that it's unlikely that I'll miss the delivery driver when he calls.
  8. 01 Ever played a gig sitting down? Acoustic gigs mainly 02 Ever gigged on a different instrument? No 03 Ever shared a stage with a musical hero of yours? Yes, a local blues singer that nobody on Basschat would know (now deceased unfortunately) 04 Any fan ever had a tatoo of your band's logo? My niece has a tattoo of the bands logo. Her dad was in the band too. 05 Ever signed an autograph in a dressing room? Many.....have no idea why they wanted them? 06 Ever cried on stage? Almost......when the singer and guitarist told me that the ex drummer, that I hated, was coming back into the band (he didn't last long until he was sacked again). 07 Ever worn a hat on stage? Yes 08 Ever gigged with a band you hadn't met before the gig? Yes, a few times when I've depped. 09 Ever been in a relationship with a fellow band member? No 10 Ever played in different bands on the same day? Pretty sure that I have. 11 Ever had anything thrown at you while playing? A full pint of lager (I didn't go back) 12 Ever crashed on the way to the gig? Almost! 13 Ever left a band over the choice of set list? No 14 Ever slept in the venue despite it not being a hotel? No 15 Ever been supported by a band clearly better than you? Yes 16 Ever played a gig suffering from some debilitating medical condition? Carpal tunnel. 17 Ever been in a band where the guitarist was your favourite bandmate? Yes, he's my brother in law. But we fell out for about ten years. Now were're friends again and occasional bandmates. 18 Ever played in the grounds of a stately home? Yes a few times 19 Ever injured yourself on stage? No 20 Ever been told that your bass isn't loud enough? All the time. Although last time I gigged, I was told I was too loud. It was a weird stage resonance, which accentuated the low frequencies, as offstage I was too quiet.
  9. 1 stingray 2 P bass 3 PJ 4 jazz bass 5 harley benton
  10. Are you a coal miner?
  11. By the way, that's a decent sounding bass for the cash. I hadn't heard one played properly before, by a good bass player.
  12. When you get the bass you want, I recommend learning to set the action up on it. For decades I struggled with badly set up basses, until I found basschat and realised how easy it is to set them up properly to make them easier to play. Oh.....and buy secondhand if you can. As when you upgrade you won't lose money when you sell it on (basses and guitars are one of the very few things that don't depreciate if you buy them secondhand).
  13. My male pal really had the hots for the bass player in Kagagoogoo, after they first appeared on Top Of The Pops. He was really heartbroken when I told him the bass player was a guy.
  14. I have recently picked up a P/J and although I prefer a Jazz neck, I'm in a git/bass/drums band and I have to admit it really fills out the sound.
  15. These days Phil Collins reminds me of Mr Grace, from are you being served. I'll not be buying a ticket.
  16. If you want to practice, hire a generator and do it in a field, standing 20 ft apart.. That should be safe enough.
  17. I have a lot of posh Jazzes with very posh pickups (Lindy Fralins and Fender Noiseless pickups) but I also have an old beater with Wilkinson pickups in it and they sound really, really nice.
  18. Entered Non Zeros, in Dundee, to be welcomed by a shitty old Laney trannie head with half the knobs missing (looked like it was from the 80s) and a knackered old 4x10, with the cloth grill kicked in. It sounded absolutely excellent. I was dumbfounded
  19. I've been lusting after that Fender Original in Sonic Blue.
  20. If you don't use the tone and the treble is up on your amp then, unless you're using an old Hofner with 20 year old flats on it, I suggest you think about investing in a hearing aid rather than upgrading your bass
  21. I thought, with jazz gigs, you had to pay the venue to let you pay
  22. Venues are staying open because they have no other choice, at the moment. Mainly because they can't claim on their insurance if they're not ordered by the Government to close. I have a friend who is playing his, probably last gig for a long time, tonight. I've decided not to go, as I am visiting a good friend tomorrow, who has a 3 year old boy with asthma. If I passed this virus on to him and there were complications, I wouldn't be able to live with myself. I have a gig on Saturday, which I really want to play, but it's probably 50/50 whether it will go ahead (because the venue may cancel or band members may decide it's not worth the risk). Update: venue has cancelled as they're closing the bar.
  23. My Niece, who is a professional musician/songwriter, has set up a Gofund me page for musicians who will perform gigs live on the web. https://www.facebook.com/yumhoneyblood There's also this lot who will stream gigs live on Youtube for you. https://www.rootsmusic.ca/2020/03/15/please-do-this-right-now-it-will-take-5-seconds-and-help-us-stream-concerts/?fbclid=IwAR0lIgpPCwzpaBMEAKHAG4eBYvnP88rAD2OYmQ9b2mcllfJ49H37czeHW6E People want to see live music and musicians want to perform. Where there's a will there's a way.
  24. None of the UK numbers are accurate. Certainly, tests on people who are not presenting themselves as severely ill, or already in hospital, are not being carried out. It's all total guesswork at this time. Even if you get ill and recover, people in the UK will have no way of knowing is they were infected by the coronavirus or just standard flu. I assume all the other statistics, for other countries, are mainly guesswork as well.
  25. I'm going the other way. After years of being a Jazz Bass guy, the Precision sound lays a very solid foundation for all my 3 bands. I bought a P bass for my country band and it sounded excellent. I then bought an Elite P/J and then introduced it to my blues/rock band and my classic rock band too. It really does the job. The Jazzes are gathering dust at the moment.
