Thanks Basschat for showing me how to tweak my trussrod.

If you want cream pickups, just change the cover, it's cheaper. Edit: ah...you've already figured that out.

The DI on your amp will be more than adequate if you ever have to be DI'd to a front of house PA. Be aware that your amp will probably have a post/pre EQ button. When it's set at Post, it means the signal going to the PA will include your EQ settings. When it's set at Pre, the signal will be totally unaltered by your EQ settings and will just be a clean signal from your bass, straight to the PA desk.

The first one is a bit middier possibly? Still sounds fine to me. Is that the immigrant song by Led Zep?

I've seen the stuff he sells on Ebay. Loads of 'Vintage Parts' selling for silly money. I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole.

My band play in music venues with a bar (is that a pub?) all backline and PA provided. The rest of our gigs are festivals. I was never keen on playing in pubs in the past, as we don't play the usual pub band fodder. Many years ago I played in a bar band, because that was my only source of income. Many times the audience were not in the least bit interested in what we played but I just treated it as a paid rehearsal. Once, at a duo gig, we played to an almost empty bar, it was pretty humiliating. The only guy who was there was the pub drunk, who started howling like a dog halfway through a song. I couldn't take it anymore, so stood up, went over to him, threw him over my shoulder and physically chucked him into the street. Amazingly the landlord asked us to come back the next week............... we declined.

Just in case anybody is worried about buying from Bassdirect, I bought a bass from them recently and it was with me in two working days.

Well, what I remember about the 'old days', is that all my gear stunk of fag smoke. Quite disgusting.

When Do You Think Your Band Will Start Gigging Again ?

Looking at that protest movement to open things up again, I can see where they're coming from - they've lost their jobs, their income and their healthcare (I'm aware health insurance is usually part of the employment deal in the States). In the UK the government have agreed to pay 80% of an employers wage bill, so many employees will be kept on, even if the business they're employed by has to close temporarily. Welfare has been increased to better meet the needs of newly unemployed workers, and of course health care is provided free of charge in the UK. It's sad that people in the USA have no choice but to risk their own health and their loved ones health, due to lack of government support. Saying that, there are those within our government who are in favour of lifting the lockdown, in the UK, to prevent (as they see it) our economy being damaged beyond repair. -
Probably going out of business.

The Mex Deluxe Precision P/J is a great bass. Sounds great and has a Jazz Style neck. I tried it in Guitar Guitar and loved it but then decided to buy the USA Elite version, without getting the chance to play it first (because I assumed, being a USA made bass it would be better than the version made south of the border). The Elite is a nice bass and sounds great but it was 100% more expensive that the Mex version and it wasn't any better sounding or better made.

If you have a laptop, with an integrated camera, I would recommend putting tape over it, unless you specifically wish to use it. But if you have been looking at naughty websites, then you're going to go to hell anyway, so it's probably too late for you. Mark Zukerberg obviously checks them out regularly.

Who started playing bass with no inspiration at all?

My 16 year old friends were starting a band. I had no real desire to be a bass player, I wanted to be the drummer but that position was taken. The position of bass player was also taken, until the guy who had decided he was to be the bass player, changed his mind and sold me his bass so he could buy a guitar. 40 years and at least 1,000 gigs later, I'm still booming away. -
I paid for it on Thursday. I expect it will be quite a while before I have it in my hot little hands. Last time i bought a bass from bassdirect, there was no communication from Bassdirect, or the courier, as to when it would arrive. After a week, I contacted Mark, who told me who the courier was. I ended up having to go down to the depot to collect it. The website says to expect delays.

I just bought something 'bass shaped' from Bassdirect 2 days ago. I don't need it, as any gigs will probably be months from now and I have plenty of other basses to choose from when that happens. It's basically retail therapy, to cheer me up in these dark days. I suppose the silver lining of this coronavirus thing, is that it's unlikely that I'll miss the delivery driver when he calls.

01 Ever played a gig sitting down? Acoustic gigs mainly 02 Ever gigged on a different instrument? No 03 Ever shared a stage with a musical hero of yours? Yes, a local blues singer that nobody on Basschat would know (now deceased unfortunately) 04 Any fan ever had a tatoo of your band's logo? My niece has a tattoo of the bands logo. Her dad was in the band too. 05 Ever signed an autograph in a dressing room? Many.....have no idea why they wanted them? 06 Ever cried on stage? Almost......when the singer and guitarist told me that the ex drummer, that I hated, was coming back into the band (he didn't last long until he was sacked again). 07 Ever worn a hat on stage? Yes 08 Ever gigged with a band you hadn't met before the gig? Yes, a few times when I've depped. 09 Ever been in a relationship with a fellow band member? No 10 Ever played in different bands on the same day? Pretty sure that I have. 11 Ever had anything thrown at you while playing? A full pint of lager (I didn't go back) 12 Ever crashed on the way to the gig? Almost! 13 Ever left a band over the choice of set list? No 14 Ever slept in the venue despite it not being a hotel? No 15 Ever been supported by a band clearly better than you? Yes 16 Ever played a gig suffering from some debilitating medical condition? Carpal tunnel. 17 Ever been in a band where the guitarist was your favourite bandmate? Yes, he's my brother in law. But we fell out for about ten years. Now were're friends again and occasional bandmates. 18 Ever played in the grounds of a stately home? Yes a few times 19 Ever injured yourself on stage? No 20 Ever been told that your bass isn't loud enough? All the time. Although last time I gigged, I was told I was too loud. It was a weird stage resonance, which accentuated the low frequencies, as offstage I was too quiet.

Are you a coal miner?

By the way, that's a decent sounding bass for the cash. I hadn't heard one played properly before, by a good bass player.
-
When you get the bass you want, I recommend learning to set the action up on it. For decades I struggled with badly set up basses, until I found basschat and realised how easy it is to set them up properly to make them easier to play. Oh.....and buy secondhand if you can. As when you upgrade you won't lose money when you sell it on (basses and guitars are one of the very few things that don't depreciate if you buy them secondhand).

I have recently picked up a P/J and although I prefer a Jazz neck, I'm in a git/bass/drums band and I have to admit it really fills out the sound.

These days Phil Collins reminds me of Mr Grace, from are you being served. I'll not be buying a ticket.
