  1. I have a Jazz Bass which has a set of Wilkinson pickups in it and they are surprisingly good. If I had to do a blind test and was told they were Lindy Fralins, I'd believe it.
  2. I live in Scotland and though born in Dublin to an Irish mother and a Welsh father, see myself as Scottish. But I just can't stand the bagpipes.
  3. Ed Friedland (The Bass Whisperer), is a favourite of mine. He is a pro bassist, who also writes books on how to play bass. His bass reviews are to the point and articulate. He also tours and records with The Mavericks, a US Mexican/Americana type band.
  4. Wot he said. You really can't go wrong with a MIJ Fender. I have bought quite a few from Basschat and they've all been great. Or you could buy a new, top of the range Marcus Miller Sire V7. I've never played one but they get ridiculously good reviews and owners on basschat love them.
  5. That's why I always stand next to the sound engineer when listening to a band
  6. I know nothing about sound engineering. But.....I have a friend who is a sound engineer and she showed me a frequency analyser she had on her laptop. She would play pink noise through the FOH and it showed her where the peaks in the venues sound were and allowed her to EQ them out. I assume you could use the same technology to analyse the sound coming from an 8x10, in a particular venue, and attempt to replicate that sound from a DI, into the FOH, via EQ on the desk. Just a thought - like I said I know nothing about sound engineering. Edit: In the video below, the pink noise generator is built into the desk.
  7. About a year ago, I bought a very nice bass with a set of, very 'used', Rotosound Swingbass strings on it. I assume the previous owner took the clean strings off and put an old knackered set on before he sold it. They're the deadest sounding roundwounds I've ever heard. they just go 'Dunk' when you pluck them. I really love the sound. It's like flatwounds with a bit more definition. I do tend to keep my roundwounds on for a LONG time. Luckily I have dry hands, so they don't get too claggy. I've started to put Elixirs on my basses now, so assume they'll last even longer before a change is needed.
  8. Yes, The HX112
  9. I bought a HD112, about 5 years ago, which was very disappointing. They were approx £350 new but these days you can't give them away, secondhand.
  10. My cunning plan is to hire a generator, ask a local farmer if I can borrow their field, get the whole band to rehearse, in the field, well over 2m apart and Bob's yer uncle! We could play all day and it would only cost whatever the hire price for the generator was. We could have a picnic!
  11. It most definitely is.
  12. And who knows when we'll ever get to play in a band, to real live people, again? So what's the point of getting new stuff?
  13. I really want to buy a Sonic Blue Fender Original 60s Jazz Bass. I already own 8 Jazz Basses! Why???? I think I need help
  14. You want to buy one of THESE!! Stupidly expensive but has a great DB sound.
  15. Have you turned it up loud with a band? I wouldn't get rid of an amp after noodling on it for a couple of days. My gear sounds very different when it's turned up loud and I'm playing with a band.
  16. I let my brother in law play my bass once and was disgusted by the slime that came off his fingers. It was lathered all over the fretboard as well. I gave my bass a wipe down as soon as he handed it back to me. I have friends who also have this problem. I, on the other hand, don't have clammy hands and most of my basses are as clean as the day I bought them and my strings last for years. i dust them occasionally. We're all different.
  17. I bought a Precision, which had them factory fitted, and found them pretty high tension. I fitted a set of Rotosound Swing Bass to, it and they felt a lot more flexible.
  18. They just counted themselves lucky you didn't decide to be a drummer.
  19. Bought an Ashdown ABM 500 IV head, for £134, about a year ago. Sounds great.
  20. I'm sorry, I cracked, I just couldn't take it anymore. It's OK now, the lockdown Police arrived, gave me a sedative and removed my amp and bass, for my own safety.
  21. Sounded great on that video.
  22. I used to own a Geddy Lee Jazz Bass and always thought it would be my perfect bass if it had a John East pre amp fitted. But when I bought another one, about a year ago, I opened up the controls cavity and the soldering was so perfectly done (Japanese Fender alway do things properly), that I couldn't bring myself to vandalise that perfect wiring. So I ended up buying a black Fender Deluxe Jazz, which is a Geddy Lee lookalike and has the active electronics already fitted (it was a stupidly cheap price). The Geddy Lee now sits under the bed
  23. I've only once bought a bass after trying it first. My most expensive online purchase was from Guitar Guitar, and I would have really like to try it beforehand but just didn't get the chance. It was slightly disappointing, when I got it, as it didn't live up to my initial preconceptions. But it's growing on me. All my other online purchases (mostly from basschat) have turned out fine and lived up to expectations.
  24. Wot he said.... Also If you curl your pinkie and the finger next to your pinkie, into the palm of your hand, it will keep them out the way while you play.
  25. No backup bass, although I bring tools with me which will sort any problem if something does go wrong. I do take a backup amp though, since my GK MB800 went a bit funny once. I bring it's little brother, my GK MB500 just in case. They're both pretty small and fit in one bag pretty easily.
