This does not effect function or safety at all...

Has it been chewed by a pit bull? That's a hell of a chunk. -
Crikey.......

I know Lawrie Macmillan. He is very tall, dark and handsome, and up until recently drove an Alfa Romeo. If, after a significant amount of lessons, for some unexplained reason, your girlfriend's bass playing is not getting any better. I would suggest you get her to to swop to a uglier, fatter, possibly with bad halitosis, bass tutor.

Fender US Standard 2014 vs 62 Reissue (2009ish) P Bass
gjones replied to BassApprentice's topic in Bass Guitars
Older style P basses tend to have shallower necks than newer ones. Certainly my Precision elite's neck, is significantly chunkier than the necks on my 57 reissue and Squier Classic Vibe P basses. -
That's Charlie Jones. I saw him playing with Goldfrapp with his see-thru bass. He's a cool cat.

I bought a really nice playing and sounding MIJ Precision from Basschat, about a year ago. But I felt like a bit of a change. So I bought a very nice Fender, Japanese, Rosewood, Precision neck, from Ebay. I removed the original maple neck from my MIJ Precision and fitted the new one. But however I fiddled with the EQ on my amp, it just didn't sound as good as it did with the old maple neck on it. I blamed the difference in sound on my imagination but eventually swopped the necks back again and instantly the bass came to life and sounded so, so much better. It appears that some necks and bodies are just destined to be together?

Help me pick a pickup set for my Jazz bass.
gjones replied to sirmuppet's topic in Repairs and Technical
I have set of Lindy Fralins in the bass shown in my profile picture. I have a set of Wilkinson pickups in an old Squier Jazz bass. The Lindy Fralins cost £150 for a set and the Wilkinsons £40. The Lindy Fralins sound great but the Wilkinsons sound excellent too. My point is, there's no need to break the bank to get a decent set of pickups. -
Told a punter to 'get to f...' for the time last night!

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
gjones replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
The guy has a Silver Series Squier on sale for £599. I suspect he's a bit of a chancer. -
I used to be a pro bass player and would take any job I was offered. But I ended up having to get a proper job to pay the bills. I've had to cancel my participation in tours with my band, twice, because of work commitments. The second time it happened, my band were backing a well respected blues singer from the USA, and I was gutted, because I was really looking forward to it. In the end he turned out to be a total curmudgeonly, old, cnut, so I'm glad I body swerved that one

Who influenced you to pick up and start playing Bass.
gjones replied to thebigyin's topic in General Discussion
The first album I owned was Rod Stewart's 'Blondes Have More Fun' (Xmas present at 14). I used to listen to it all the time and really liked Phil Chen's bass playing, which was really tight. This was a year or so before I picked up a bass. -

That drummer's fills are rubbish. Like a couple of toms being thrown down a flight of stairs -
How do you become a guitar/bass tech?
gjones replied to lewiswhitebass's topic in Repairs and Technical
I have a friend who became the guitar tech for the Soweto Gospel choir. She'd been a sound engineer, around Edinburgh and Glasgow, for a few years and out of the blue got a call from a friend, who was having to drop out of the choir's UK tour and asked her if she fancied taking over the job. Of course she had no idea about being a guitar tech but said yes anyway. I had to teach her how to tune a guitar. She managed to get through the UK tour and eventually she ended up as their tour manager, on a 6 week tour from Hamburg to Istanbul. -
I have a road worn Jazz and another Jazz with a set of roadworn pickups in it. The trick to get a fuller sound, is to lower the bridge pickup and raise the neck pickup.

I own the 5 string tribute version. Great basses that don't get the love they deserve.

I work for a local authority and you are 100% correct. In my experience, the person who will get the job has already been picked from within the council but the job still has to be advertised to outside candidates, due to regulations.

The sound of the Rhodes on this Turin Brakes track is sublime.

John East Uni Pre 4 Knob Issue in Active Mode
gjones replied to Meypelnek's topic in Repairs and Technical
Just email John East. I bought a J-Retro pre amp from him that was faulty (no earth wire attached). I sent it back to him and he repaired it for free. If you've not installed it correctly, he'll advise you what you need to do. Edit: I see you've already emailed him.....my bad. -

I think you've confused us with www.asschat.co.uk it's an easy mistake to make. -
I always assumed it was a cartel agreement, between the large retailers, that kept prices so similar.

Why not just replace the farting speaker in the practice amp?

The MB800 is significantly louder than the MB500 but I've not used it, through the SC, at a really loud gig yet. The last time I played a loud gig, through my own rig, I used the MB800 with my old barefaced Compact. That combination was quite capable of drowning the rest of the band out completely.
