  1. Sounds to me like he's tried to flip it on immediately, and then realised that he can't make a profit on it. Twonk. The concept of Ebay is good, but their poor policies and lack of enforcement mean it's become a nightmare to deal with.
  2. I do seem to have an annoying habit of having been to a lot of places... Every time the kids come home from school with some amazing fact they learnt about somewhere new, I'm like "oh, yeah, I've been there..." They get quite miffed. 😀
  3. Radar Systems Engineer... Manufacturing Design Engineer (too much travel)... Offshore Survey Engineer /Skipper (great job, rubbish pay, awful manager)... I&E Engineer for a tidal renewables firm... Project Manager looking after lighthouses & Tennis coach. One pays well, the other is fulfilling.
  4. That makes me want to vomit... Why does any citizen need weaponry like that?
  5. I use this style of velcro ties: https://www.hookandloop-direct.co.uk/fastna-hook-loop-cable-ties-tidies I got pack of 50 about 12 years ago, and still have 20 odd left. Gave some away, a few got lost or nicked, but those that remain still work just fine. I actually got them for nowt, as well! There was a fault with the companies web shop, which I pointed out to them, and they sent me the order for free, by way of thanks.
  6. I'm normally a nailed-on sucker for binding and blocks, but I'm not actually sure that needs it. The body is awesome and that board looks great as it is, imo.
  7. I think that's the Adam Clayton sig model. Certainly they used to have one in the window. I quite fancied it, but: 1. What's the point of blocks on a jazz neck without binding? 2. It's Adam Clayton... 3. The price was less than 10% off what a new one would have cost. 4. It's Adam Clayton...
  8. Tube Driver, with a large London Underground logo across the top?
  9. Back in the days I was playing with an Americana/ Alt County outfit, The Hold Steady were on pretty regular rotation, along with bands like Chuck Prophet, Richmond Fontaine, Farrah and the Gaslight Anthem - thanks for the reminder @RussFM I thought the first couple of albums were great, but kinda lost track of them after Boys and Girls... Must go and dig out those albums again!
  10. Getting a bit O/T, but once upon a time I teched on a Nimmo Brothers gig. Great band, but far and away the loudest on-stage sound I've ever encountered. Stupidly loud. To the point that even standing back stage was painful. I'm with 4000 and Monkey Steve at being just a fraction under 6 foot. Although I am now half and inch taller than I was 15 years ago! I hurt my back lifting a monitor on a gig in my early 20's. It wasn't until I went to a chiropractor in my 40's that the twist in my spine was properly sorted, allowing me to stand up straight for the first time in 20 years! Still didn't make it to 6 foot, though... 😣
  11. Man, this is lovely! That's a lot of bass for the money. If I hadn't splurged on an ACG earlier this year... Good luck with the sale!

    OMG! That's a thing of beauty Walshy! What a great pick-up. 👍
  13. I spoke to a chap called James Strange a few years ago, who was very sound and had a lot of good ideas. I never followed it through, though so don't have first hand experience of his teaching. He's on Twitter @Bass_Man_Jim.
  14. I have a rough transcription of this from somewhere else... this is much better! Thanks! 👍
  15. Oh man! I have wanted one of these for years! Pretty much everything I want in a bass. Sadly I have neither the money or the capacity for this. It's a thing of beauty. 🤤 Good luck. 👍
  16. Darn. I seem to have just bought a Bass Buddy and a set of headphones... 🙄😀 To be fair I was seriously considering getting a Bighead and a set of the cans anyway, so I guess the Bass Buddy is a bit of an upgrade for less money... 👍
  17. Given that the EMT uses, predominantly, military bands and musicians, I don't understand why they didn't just ask through the Forces for players to cover this gig? For a lot of years, I worked crew/stage management for the Edinburgh Jazz Festival. Every year we would have one or two of the Tattoo bands involved in one of the big, freebie public events we ran. A couple of times we had an RAF swing/big band ensemble, and those guys could seriously play! Really good. Would have been more than capable of covering the requirements of this show.
  18. I'm at work at the moment, so if someone wants to post something up, feel free!
  19. Thank crunchie I'm not the only one thinking this! My good lady loves them, so I'm being forced to endure them currently, but by 'eck they are poor.
  20. That is nice. Classic, simple and very lovely! 👍
  21. Thanks for the responses, folks! The bass is indeed a beauty and despite being an 'off the shelf' purchase, it's pretty much exactly what I would have gone for, had I actually commissioned a custom build anyway. There probably would been some block inlays, but other than that... There's a smidge of guilt over the cost and that fact that I've barely played in the last 4-ish years, but getting to own and play such an amazing bass has definitely given me fresh impetus to get back into the groove. Going to make a point of learning with a bit of theory this time round, rather than just bashing out songs - the Major's bootcamp course is looking like a good port of call. Thanks for the video Drax - basic is where i need to be right now!
  22. For some time now I've been keen on the fabulous basses being made by Alan at ACG. The idea of having a bass which was made in your home town was rather appealing, especially when your home town is a tiny wee place like Moffat. The fact that they look amazing and had consistently great reviews also helps. I wouldn't quite have called it GAS, but I was certainly an interested observer. A few years back I had big plans for a 40th birthday commission, but having tried a couple at a Bass Bash, I discovered I really couldn't get to grips with the asymmetric neck carve and flat board. Coupled with the fact that I wasn't playing in a band anymore, and I couldn't honestly justify the outlay. So, back to a watching brief... Until, that is, Alan advertised a couple of stock basses he had, on here recently. Oh dear. A couple of hypothetical "What if..." conversations with the Management; a quick calculation of the finances; and a trip to Moffat under the pretence of visiting my folks so I could try it out... As mentioned in the Gear Abstinence thread, I was kidding no one, least of all myself and was doomed. But in a good way! 😉 I am now the proud owner of an ACG RetroB, J5! - Maple body with an acrylic impregnated spalted maple top, and a Black Walnut accent layer. The spalted maple is just amazing. - 3 piece Wenge/Maple with Wenge headstock and a spalted maple overlay. Fingerboard is the same acrylic impregnated spalted maple as the body and it runs together beautifully. 20" radius board and although it has the asymmetric neck carve, it's a lot subtler than the normal ACG profile. - John East Uni pre-amp, which has such a bewildering array of tones, it'll take me a while to get to grips with. Linky thing to ACG website If anyone has any helpful tips or resources for transitioning from 4 to 5 strings, especially when you haven't played at all for a long while, it would be muh appreciated!
