1. I've been a long time fan of his show on 6 music for a few years now. It's just great. It was even better when he had the extra hour on Radio 2 as well - 4 hours of back-to-back high quality funk and soul! It's also known as the Most Expensive Show On Radio, in our house, because pretty much every week I end up a with a shopping list of CDs to go out and buy. Great fun though.
I listened to the last program he did on Radio 2. One of the best radio programs I've ever heard. Every track was a cracker and I'm not particularly a funk and soul fan. He played an amazing remix of Marvin Gaye's Heard it Through the Grapevine.
Was that the one by the Reflex? The remix of the CCR version? It's brilliant!
2.
I wonder how many people were inspired to get into Bass by Geddy. I know I certainly was.
Not inspired to take up the bass, but most certainly inspired to take it seriously... I was in a band with some mates at school, and as there was an overabundance of guitarists and I was the least experienced/competant, I wound up on bass. I had got to grips with most of the basics but wasn't really that enthused about playing bass, until I heard LA Villa Strangiato on the Fluff Freeman rock show... totally blew my mind both as a band, and that you could achieve that sound and skill on a bass. Wow. Went out the next day and bought Exit... and the rest is history. Only managed to see them once - on the Roll the Bones tour (which I quite like as an album), and it was an awesome stage show.
3. In the words of The Trammps: Zing go the strings of my heart! That is a lovely, lovely looking bass. Well done.
4.
As an apprentice i was sent to the stores for a long weight..... I send apprentices to the stores to get sparks for the grinder and the storeman asks them what colour? Just saying
Used to happen at a place I previously worked at. A lot. The store man eventually took pity on one poor lad who was sent round to get a replacement bubble for a spirit level - disassembled a spare level and gave him the glass bulb to take back. Was the last time that lad was sent on an errand.
5. Jason Falkner has had a long as somewhat sporadic solo career, which has produced some very, very fine albums. Can You Still Feel & Author Unknown are particularly good, as is The Grays album Ro Sham Bo. Sadly the Grays only ever managed the one album, but it's a cracker. Jason has also done a lot of work as a producer and some that that stuff is worth tracking down - he usually ends up playing on some of the tracks on whatever album he's working on. He was heavily involved helping Brendan Benson in the early days of his career. Roger, I think, is still working with Beck, but turns up as a session player in a lot of places. The big one is Andy, and that fact that he just doesn't want to play live anymore. I believe we was writing a lot of children’s TV theme tunes for Disney & Cartoon Network for a long time, but hasn't put anything out under his own name since the demise of Jellyfish, that I'm aware of. He was involved with a band call the Merrymakers, which was quite good stuff, if you can find it.
6. It would appear that I have the breaking strain of a soggy kit-kat... Ordered already!
7.
Thrash metal band Anthrax are banned from playing in Wales
They also own a small island off the north-west coast of Scotland, not far from Ullapool.
8. I loved Jellyfish when they were around, and links on from them have spawned a lot of my listening choices over the years since they split. I remember well the fustration caused by the UK release date for Spilt milk being delayed a couple of times. They were such a great live act too. I might be tempted to buy these, although if there's nothing new on them, I'm not sure - although I have just shelled out for the Iron Maiden vinyl reissues, even though I have all of them already as well... Omnivore certainly do seem to be doing a good job of getting this stuff back in the public eye. Very much picking upon from where Not Lame left off.
9.
Good to hear people are trying out Royal Blood at gigs. We also play 'Little Monster' in Drop D (as I believe many of us are!) Had a night off and what was going to be a rejig of the pedalboard just became a jam session of various riffs, so I put together a few into the video below. It's a good laugh and definitely worth a go if you're in a small band/one guitarist band to really beef up the mix!
That's excellent work! Nice one. Did you programme the drum tracks yourself, or were they availabe wholesale somewhere?
10. Going back a little bit, but the first 'proper' job after finishing uni was in Chelmsford, at the end of 1996. A group of 5 lads got together for a house share as we were all new to the company and town. After finishing moving everything in on the first day in the hose, we decided to go for a beer. Stopped at the first pub we came to just round the corner and walked in to the sight of a couple of strippers giving it their all at 3 o'clock on a Sunday afternoon . Strangely enough, it became our local...
11.
To be honest all you need to know is if they are any good for metal!!!!
Well, you know, like, they are made from Nickel, which is kinda a metal, innit? Gotta be.
12. I tend not to suffer GAS much these days, but for a while now I have had a lingering desire to try out and potentially upgrade my Hartke rig to Vanderkley cabinets. Wasn't sure what amp to go for, but if there is now a matching head to go with the cabinets, this could be fatal. Fantastic build - a lot of very nice features taken into consideration, and the whole thing looks like it was meant to be! Well done. How do the amp and cabs sound?
13. Like Geddys nose, my P Lyte was my first proper bass too! Got mine in 1989 as well, which looking through the thread, seems to have been a common year for them, although it's dated as an '86. Frost red with the gold hardware. I love mine - the light body and super skinny neck make it such an easy bass to play. I find it great for trying out chords, 2-handed tapping and general noodling. The only down side is a tendency to eat batteries. I did once read about a mod that could be done to replace one particular chip in the preamp which was responsible for the high power consumption, but have never actually managed to find out what the mod is.
14.
Attempted to pull off a Jean Jaques Burnel stylee karate kick, misjudged it and twatted the guitarist in the head knocking him out temporarily.
There have been a couple of guitarists I've worked with where I would dearly loved to have done something similar... accidentally, of course... One in particular where I came with about 5 seconds of taking my bass off and twatting him around the head with it, as he was being a complete tool and ruining the whole show (outdoor festival show, supporting the Quo, big crowd, big deal for the band at that point in time). Fingers crossed, but I've managed to avoid any major calamities so far - I think the worst has to be forgetting to un-mute a tuner as the bass was supposed to kick in...
15. This used to be mine (minus the East pre-amp), and I can only say that a: Andy is a great guy to deal with, and b: I did a shed loads of gigs, touring and recording with this bass (and case) for about 5 years, and she never once let me down. I loved the feel of the neck on this, and would gladly have it back, but sadly don't really have the need for it anymore. Getting it past the Minister for Finance could be tricky, too... Good luck with the sale!
16. That. Is. A. Monster! Very, very awesome. Would love to see the look on people's faces if you turned up at a jazz gig and pulled that out of a flightcase!
17. I used to do sound and stage work at the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues festival, so have had brief encounters with a number of famous-ish folks. Jools Holland was short & grumpy, Paul Jones was exceedingly friendly. Colin Hodgkinson was there one year as part of some re-formed super group (not the Animals, but along those lines). We spent a very enjoyable 30 mins at sound check coaxing a lovely sound out of the hired-in Ampeg rig, and he was great to chat to. He did a blistering version of Snab's Rag as a solo during the set. Spencer Davis was also there that weekend, and my abiding memory of him was that fact that he spend nearly all of his time on the phone. According to his band, he's rarely actually taking to someone, just pretends to be having a conversation to avoid having to deal with real people... My only other 'name' bass player interaction was with Herbie Flowers. Many moons ago, I wanted to use a piece of his music at my wedding and contacted him to see if he would be OK with it. He wrote a very nice note back, and also included a copy of the sheet music for the whole album the track was on! Gent.
18. I recently ordered a kick-drum pedal from an e-bay store for my Dad, and had the same experience as KiOgon with Interlink Express. I was very impressed with the service - there was even an option to text or e-mail the driver with an updated place to leave the parcel, as I wasn't going to be in when he got there. And yes, he did exactly as requested.
19. I'm not normally a huge fan of 'coffee table' tops, but man, that London Plane is awesome! I like the headstock shape, too. Great work!
20. Not my normal cup o' tea, but I really, really enjoyed that Nigel! Nice work and what a great gig to get - on you "2nd" instrument, as well! Best of luck with it. I was rather shocked to discover that you look nothing at all like your avatar, though...
21. I converted my Jazz to a P/J and got Chris McIntyre to make up a new plate to acommodate the P-pup. As with Dave up above, it's wasn't a cheap option (£40 or £45), but he did a very nice job. http://www.mcintyreguitars.com/
22. Just to throw in an update on my IEM saga: I spent a couple of week arguing the toss with my audiologist about that fact that if he's acting as an agent for ACS, then it's not unreasonable to expect him to have some knowledge about the product and be able to advise accordingly. Clearly the T3 was never going to be a good solution for what I was looking for, but they assured me it would be OK - and, lo and behold, it wasn't. I was then going to go down the 1964 Quad route, but between them ACS and my audiologist came up with a price for upgrading to the T1 which was less than switching to the 1964s. After much too-ing and fro-ing, I finally picked up my set of ACS T1s yesterday, and they are everything the T3s were not! Sound quality is, quite simply, lovely. Clarity and definition - I'm hearing things in songs I know well that I've never picked up on. Average listening volume is no more than 2/3rds of what it used to be with my old Sennheisers as well. Initially I thought they were still a bit bass light, but on reflection, I think the balance is just fine - more natural than striving for an artificial, bass heavy sound. The isolation is excellent too. Wandering around town with them in, I actually feel in danger from passing traffic because there is virtually no background noise leaking through, so you don't hear cars/people until they are really close to you! Tends to spook me out. Might take a bit of getting use to. Have yet to get a chance to try them with my bass, but I have high hopes. I would be tempted to try the 1964s if I ever decided to get another set - probably the V6s, for all the price difference there is between them and the Quads. However, for now, I have no complaints.
23. That's a really nice watch - thanks! A wonderfully naive lack of health and safety awareness, too. Especially the paintshop guys....
24. I have the Vox Amplug, and for the money, it's very good. Sound quality could be a bit better (there's a bit of background hiss), but it was only £30, is small & compact and does a very good job. If you want to spend a bit more money, something like the sfx H1 headphone amp looks amazing. http://www.sfxsound.co.uk/h1/ A fair number of folks on here have one, and it seems to get universally excellent reviews. Definitely on my GAS list - think they come on at around £130, these days.
25.
Don't forget this little-known JF solo album number
Can't see that becoming a hit... played on the wrong shape of guitar for a start! Was introduced to CCR by a mate at school, many moons ago, and have loved them ever since. Always been in the top 5 of my "If I could have been in any band..." list.
